Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn't the thing that makes a social media site, it's the engagement...
Make sure to use browse.feddit.de to see if there is already a community before creating your own. We also don't want to fragment and make the main communities harder to find.
The ball is already rolling. Reddit has done more to make people aware of Lemmy than we could possibly do ourselves. But more than just making people aware, we also need to teach people how to actually sign up and use lemmy to find their communities.
And we also need to donate because I'm kinda worried about the infrastructure if this thing really takes off. We might need many more instances with beefy hardware to support new users
A fascinating analysis of the themes and motifs common to the mythologies and oral traditions of a variety of ancient cultures. Campbell delves into mythology in search of some perennial or fundamental truth.
Wow. I posted about a book from 1949 and got a response from someone currently reading it within 10 minutes. On lemmy, not reddit. I find the book to be very comforting, because it connects us to thousands of years of human history and tradition in a way that we can understand.
I'll post a one of my favorite passages here.
For centuries Daedalus has represented the type of the artist-scientist: that curiously disinterested, almost diabolic human phenomenon, beyond the normal bounds of social judgment, dedicated to the morals not of his time but of his art. He is the hero of the way of thought--singlehearted, courageous, and full of faith that the truth, as he finds it, shall make us free. And so now we may turn to him, as did Ariadne. The flax for the linen of his thread he has gathered from the fields of the human imagination. Centuries of husbandry, decades of diligent culling, the work of numerous hearts and hands, have gone into the hackling, sorting, and spinning of thus tightly twisted yarn. Furthermore, we have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path. And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.
I read 'The Iliad,' 'The Oddysey,' and 'Beowulf' when I was in high school. Followed by parts of 'Inferno' and 'Cantebury Tales.' In college when studying Japanese, I read 'The Tale of Genji.'...
I've also read the first three and parts of the next two. So we're on par with that. I think the Iliad and the odyssey are amazing. I named my bong in college Little Ajax.
I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and some may know that he aspired to create a mythology for Britain. At least for the time being I'd figure it's fine to discuss the silmarillion at least within this community, if not Tolkien's entire corpus.
Would you say Grimms fairy tales fit in here too?
Trying to gauge if it needs to be actual mythology
I'm just one or two steps ahead of you, I'm still figuring it out myself. I think right now it's definitely annoying to find communities, but in a few months it will become much easier. Once certain communities get big, it should become common knowledge where to find them. There is actually a tool at browse.feddit.de that I used to find the other nfl community. You can go there and search for anything to see if there is a community for it on another instance.
Really smart post. I was just about to create an Always Sunny in Philadelphia community but I'm gonna wait.
I'm assuming that the server admin (AKA theDude) can also delete dead/spam communities if it becomes necessary. Might make sense to nip our nfl community in the bud and direct people to !nfl
To be frank, I think we need many more neutral default instances, because both lemmy.ml and beehaw strike me as insular communities with strong opinions about certain topics. They have been here significantly longer than me, and I think the relative obscurity of the platform was something they valued to some degree. I think they are nice enough people, but they do not seem prepared or willing to absorb a massive reddit influx of people from all different walks of life.
Really love the app so far. I would like to see a feature to save or discard comment drafts, like on boost. I tend to write long comments and having the ability to save a draft is quite nice.
Lemmy datahoarder community is kinda dead though, maybe people reading this thread would like to subscribe.
datahoarder@lemmy.ml
Unless there is another community I'm unaware of. Also I don't think that link works, not sure if there is a way to format community links that I'm not aware of.
The instance list has a couple of recommended sites at the top. They are defined in this file and seperated by language. For most languages there is only one recommendation or none at all, so you can simply add yours by making a pull request....
Yeah that needs to be fixed ASAP. Is that behavior always the case or does it only happen when the link leads to a community that your instance is not already subscribed to? It's quite annoying to have to go back to the home instance and manually find the thread again in order to comment.
Yes, I’m certain I could final answers to all these questions via research, but I’m coming here as part of the Reddit diaspora. My guess is that there’s a benefit to others like me to have this discussion....
I largely agree with your assessment. Its not necessarily a problem in the long run to have multiple local communities. I guess I'm still trying to wrap my head around how this is all going to work.
I still think that it's too confusing to newcomers at the moment. For instance, I want to talk about soccer, but I have no idea where to find such a community. I'm not going to start a community because I'm lazy and I assume it will fail. Or perhaps I want to look at memes, and I find a meme community but it's relatively small and inactive. There are 10 other meme communities in different instances, and the combined content would have satiated me, but there is no easy way for me view or find them, so I simply give up.
It's crucial to direct new users to active communities before they abandon the platform entirely. Within the context of the current reddit exodus, we should be trying to harness the seeds of as many communities as possible, so that they might take root and grow on this platform. The current structure of the fediverse is not very conducive to doing so.
The solution might be as simple as a good tutorial with a list of recommended communities. Btw you're a legend, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain and discuss this. I also wrote an entire response longer than this and it was lost to the ether(my spotty wifi), so I had to rewrite this as best as I could.
The type of user that is alienated enough by the API changes and capable of actually creating a Lemmy account surely has significant overlap with internet veterans and generally intelligent people. Which is fantastic news, I remember trying voat.co and it was just overrun by nazis and complete idiots. So far on Lemmy my experience has been the opposite. I'm not old enough to be a Usenet veteran, but I did experience the age of the BBS. I remember spending a lot of time on Totse back in the day.
Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it...
To me, it's more about critical mass. Reddit isn't going to die, but imo reddit has gotten too big anyway. I wouldn't want everyone on reddit to migrate to Lemmy. All we need is enough people to get the ball rolling, and then things will grow organically.

It seems like it’s going to have to evolve organically. Federating individual communities might work, like if you’re subscribed to memes@lemmy.ml it could also pull in posts from memes@sh.itjust.works and other similar communities on a voluntary basis. It is a problem that needs solving though.
He didn't get banned that quickly, he basically called out tankie propaganda for a week before they banned him.
The beauty of this platform is that we actually can block the main instance and also create as many world news communities of our own as we want. It won't take long before the OG communities are outnumbered anyway.
Do your part, try not to lurk!
