Everyone should choose their first distro based on what his friend/neighbor uses already. Direct support can’t be beaten.

Windows 11 vs Ubuntu vs Fedora 39 vs Arch Linux - Speed Test! (youtu.be)

Even though different Linux distros are often fairly close in terms of real-life performance and all of them have a clear advantage over Windows in many use cases, we can’t reject the fact that Arch Linux has undoubtedly won the competition. And now I’m so glad to have another reason to proudly say “I use Arch btw”...

LMDE just rocks (lemmy.ml)

I have been testing for a few weeks Mint, originally started on 21.2 on an old 2012 MacBook Air… the OS was flying! As I was looking at this now 10 years old machine, now back to usable speed again I was pleasantly surprised. On my desktop was still running Fedora that is just a bit more shiny and has the latest “stable”...

They’re waiting for Debian developers backporting the patches.

The threads about distros are the really bad ones.

Try: github.com/marmolak/gray386linux <– It was designed for really old hardwares.

I’ve already tried MX Linux on an old Thinkpad SL400, and didn’t see any difference from plain Debian.

Because it’s the stock Debian + custom themes/skins + some crappy useless minitools. The 99% of packages come from the official Debian repository, the rest are only the rice.

If you have newer machine than a real 386:

Why do you want to get your girlfriend mad at you?

Seeking info on all of the many, lesser known desktop environments

So I am an aesthetics guy when it comes to my distro and desktop environment. I like things to look clean and visually appealing. Last night I kinda took a deep dive into the world of different DE’s. Of course there’s the popular ones that everybody knows about i.e. Cinnamon, Xfce, KDE, Mate, Gnome, etc., however there’s a...

Also it’s difficult to find a clear list of all the available environments.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Comparison_of_X_Window_System_…

how the heck do I find out more about DE’s and which distro they are compatable with.

All DEs can be run on all mainstream distros.

appear to be the same visually.

It’s just the default theme + icon packs. You can configure any DE to looks very similar as other DE, if you use the same icon pack + themes + wallpapers.

I should mention that I have zero interest in the window manager or tiler or whatever they are called. To me, they are super ugly and very confusing to understand :)

Spoiler: all DEs using a window manager, so all DEs are super ugly for you…
