So apparently Apple approved a knock-off of GBA4iOS — the predecessor to @delta I made in high school — in the App Store. I did not give anyone permission to do this, yet it’s now sitting at the top of the charts (despite being filled with ads + tracking)

I’ve bit my tongue a bunch in the past month…but this really frustrates me. So glad App Review exists to protect consumers from scams and rip-offs like this 🙄

jarednay,

@rileytestut @delta it’s sitting at the top of the charts in… Developer? This App approval process is more sus every day. You have the right to be pissed. Shame Apple seems to have removed the ability to report a problem.

I did it! I completely cleaned out my downloads folder. AMA

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@BasicAppleGuy I think I have 10-20 files in mine. Mostly things I plan to delete. Everything else gets moved or deleted after they are no longer useful as I download things.
Others don’t do this? Are you also someone who lets physical mail pile up with junk mail for months?
Hope your AMA helps others achieve this form of clarity.

OK but how do I tell iOS 17 to not prompt me to start a check in with my emergency contact every time I leave the house? Because omfg. The feature doesn’t appear anywhere in settings so can’t be turned off

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith @ezekiel I have all toggled on from the Siri & Search>Messages menu. Have never gotten this suggestion. I’m almost always on Beta seed though.

Here’s a screenshot of Stolen Device Protection at work 👀

Starting from iOS 17.3, users can enable Stolen Device Protection to be required to authenticate with Face ID when accessing the Passwords preference pane while away from home. This is such a welcome change! 🙏

@simonbs hoping they fix the “trusted locations” stuff in next beta build. Currently thinks my home is not trusted.

Recently I chatted with colleagues about iCloud Keychain and how it seems insecure that an attacker can shoulder surf a victim to obtain the 4-digit passcode that protects their iPhone and ultimately access all the victim’s passwords.

This seems like a valid point, especially as this differs from 1Password which doesn’t allow unlocking a vault with the iPhone’s passcode.

Does anything in iOS prevent this or should people using iCloud Keychain protect their iPhone with an alphanumeric passcode?

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I agree that 4 digits is terrible. Especially since it and even the 6 digit provide the dots on screen that take the length guessing out of a brute force.

That being said, since it’s a local passcode, I’d argue the security is LESS of a risk than cloud based credentials for most people.

But I chose a few years ago to use a custom passcode outside of the 4 or 6 digit constraints because I do agree it’s more responsible.

macOS Sonoma question: is there any way to turn off the new "suggested emoji" popup when pressing the globe key? It's never, ever correct for me, and just wastes my time 🤷‍♂️

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@twostraws I’ve never even used the globe key on macOS. I have been using CTRL+Command+Spacebar and then searching for the emoji I want. Not the best experience, but what my brain decided was “the way”.

question: I have a paid-upfront app that requires iOS 16.

If I release a new version requiring iOS 17 and at the same time switch to free + IAP.

Would new users on iOS 16 be able to "purchase" the older version? And if so I would assume it's free?

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@nighthawk this is definitely how it works for macOS App Store. Specifically have dealt with this work iLife/iWork apps on client machines.

I'm looking for a rock solid < 15W pfSense box, that doesn't cost a fortune.

I could go with one of the various N5105 or N100 aliexpress “firewalls” + USB watchdog timer, but not sure how reliable that hardware is for just sitting there without being touched for months. Plus would always worry about the damned things catching on fire.

Other choice is actually a Mac Mini 2014, I know they are reliable, won't catch on fire and sip power. But no hardware watchdog option on these…

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@paul I took a couple home from work when they were going to throw them out. I canibalized them to make a couple souped up ones, and they are little headless powerhouses. Good on-prem wireless time machines for the fam too!

Tip if you are making a new app targeting iOS 17:
Apple still requires iPhone 5.5" screenshots, but there is no iPhone that supports iOS 17 with that screen size (the last one was iPhone 8 Plus, but it's not supported). Instead, take a screenshot of iPhone SE 3rd-gen and then scale it up in an image editor.

jarednay,

@marcoarment @viticci weird… my Bedtime focus mode always tells me what my bedtime alarm is. They must be considering that one a different type of alarm. “Working as intended.”

visionOS beta 3 removes support for mouse and trackpad 👀 Very curious, after it working in the previous betas. I wonder how long they're removing it for — it worries me that they added UI to explain this, if it's only going to be temporary…

Today's challenge: Figuring out why Runestone doesn't show the insertion point until the user selects the text view a second time on iOS 17. This works perfectly on iOS 15 and iOS 16 🫠

Screen recording of an iPhone simulator running Runestone and showing the issue described in the post.

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I’m guessing this is related to the current Messages bug that causes the text preview to not show up unless you dismiss the keyboard and tap again.

After installing watchOS 10, I miss the feature where I could swipe on a watch face to change to the next and previous watch faces. I can no longer do that. I’m unsure if that is a bug or intended behavior, either way I hope that Apple will bring it back 🤞

jarednay,
@jarednay@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I liked this until I had a child. Holding babies with their 10 undeveloped styli flailing about always ends up with my watch being on a new face.
