Far from the IA/ML hype, my Phd student and I are working on a computer time proposal, and it is ever so despairing to rediscover that to do a reasonable job at modelling the kind of very very specialized stuff we usually want to model in this business, the very minimal allocation we need is going to end up putting 10 tons of CO2 in the air on an "energy-efficient" last generation supercomputer, in a country with a very favourable energy mix from the strict CO2 emission point of view. To hell.

@grb090423 The only reason we are going for it is for my student to have a formal research training and gain experience with HPC and the associated physics research that goes with it. I'm done with big number crunching in astro personally.

@sundogplanets Currently, renewables still emit similarly (wind) or more (~3x for solar PV) than nuclear on a life cycle assessment, so while the emissions will be significantly less than with a coal-powered supercomputing centre, with current energy efficiencies of GPU cores it's impossible to fall below 1t CO2eq/MCPUh whatever source of energy you are using. Considering that typical massive astro simulations are in the range of 5-100 MPCUh these days...

@sundogplanets Not an advertisement for nuke at all btw, I just point out there's no magic bullet to solve this problem. Well, actually there's one, and it is to stop doing this kind of stuff. I'm letting my student learn how to do this and exploit some HPC results, but that's probably the last project of this kind I'm engaging with in astro.

@cazencott @juliegiovacchini @Bromind Avec le technosolutionnisme en recherche associé a l'IA/ML, il semble qu'il n'existe pas de problème notoirement diffficile qu'une méthode technique facile à mettre en oeuvre par un.e étudiant.e lambda ne puisse pas faire semblant de résoudre.
