@andresmh this is outside of Pittsburgh, I think this particular one is paid for by the little shopping plaza I was in, which is pretty common. Others are paid for by the park systems, like you got to the park and there’s free charging.

so, every ~6 months or so, my verizon fios internet connection stops working, and i talk to a robot for ~8 minutes, it reboots something on their end, and it works.

10 years ago, i would have spent 30 minutes on the phone, talking to a human who would do the same thing.

but, … why do i have to call at all?

In honor of discovering that I've apparently had a Wikipedia page for a few months, I decided to tell the story of why I'm not a Wikipedian (a story I told Jimmy Wales lol) and this seems like the kind of thing that might interest you all: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5i1r68Lyk-/

Though TL;DR if you don't want to watch a four minute video, my attempt to increase coverage of children's literature on Wikipedia was met with exactly the kinds of gatekeeping acrimonious jerk behavior you might expect.

@cfiesler i made a bunch of wikipedia pages for colleagues like 10 years ago, and most/all still exist(!), then one tried to make one for me, and it was rejected or nominated for deletion or whatever, lol

@cfiesler mr. wales did not care! actually, some shade to the anonymous person who tried to make my page -- it's pretty easy to get academics to have wikipedia pages and keep them, but there's definitely unwritten rules about what you gotta do to make the person "noteworthy" or whatever. notwithstanding random troll people who probably try to take down pages. the legit wikipedians can be assuaged by things like a certain number of legit references and things like that.

@bwaber yeah… i've long thought those mid-tier expensive schools should be on the way out, and i've long justified "well, at least a computer science undergrad who pays $300k for their education will pay it back pretty quickly"

these days Google Scholar usually knows about my publications having been made publicly available before I do, and so I just update the list of publications on my web page based on it.

I think back in the day, I would post papers on my web page because it would take too long for them to appear on the official sites, and they'd be paywalled and hard to access there.
