Hi!!! I’m a strategist/entrepreneur/software engineer/activist, focusing on the intersection of justice, equity, and software engineering. I’ve been on the fediverse for a long time and am currently checking out /KBin. @jdp23 is my main account on

Suggestions for activism campaigns on Lemmy and kbin? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I’m working on an activism campaign kicking off next week opposing some bad internet bills in the US – here’s the kbin magazine I just set up, and I might set up a Lemmy community as well if that makes sense. Once things get going, we’ll be sharing links including information and actions people can take....

It’s a great point. This kind of legislative activism is frequently done in public on Twitter, Facebook, etc. as well so the risks are low in general but it’s still something to make people aware of. It’s a real contrast with anything that’s direct action, where the fediverse is a non-starter.

What browser are you using? I have that issue in Firefox, but not in Chrome.

Queer redditor needing help with fediverse

Hello queer friends, So a few days ago I left reddit and I started looking into the fediverse as an alternative but the more I read the more confused I got XD So I would like some help please. I did read the "The Queer Guide to Finding a Fediverse Server" which was helpful but I would like more information....

Welcome! A bit more on kbin and lemmy as reddit alternatives:

You can follow and post to Lemmy communities from kbin, upvote and downvote posts, and leave comments. The same the other way around. At least, you can when it's working, sometimes bugs get in the way!

You can also follow and post to either from Mastodon, and make comments, but you can't upvote or downvote from Mastodon.

In general Mastodon's a more Twitter-like experience, Lemmy is Reddit-like, and KBin merges the two -- it's got a "microblog" tab as well as the link aggregation.

Update: If you don't like Mastodon's interface, there's also CalcKey, which has a very different feel. I've got an account blahaj.zone, which is a very queer-friendly CalcKey instances, and there are others as well including calckey.lgbt.

Exciting times! And get well soon Kaity!

A (partial) queer, trans, and non-binary history of Mastodon and the fediverse (wedistribute.org)

I had posted a draft version of this here last week with a different title; this is the revised and expanded version. Thanks everybody for the feedback, and thanks to We Distribute for pubishing the revised version. Most of all, thanks to all the trans, queer, and nonbinary people who have helped build the #fediverse and are...

The Queer Guide to Finding a Fediverse Server.

Joining the fediverse can be a daunting proposition, and it is understandable that many end up on larger more centralised servers that are easier to find. I have also had some bad experience with smaller servers also. The first one I arrived on was very quiet, almost inactive, and I should have taken that as a warning sign....

toot.cat's a great site, I've had an account there since 2017, and it's very queer-friendly. I don't know whether the current admin has stated their gender so you might want to check on that.

With eightpoint, quite a few sites defederated late last year because of information that one of their moderators was actually somebody who is widely seen as a serial abuser, has a reputation for inflitrating and wrecking radical left spaces, and has in the past cooperated with the FBI ... but was using a different name on eightpoint (as they have multiple times in the past). Of course in a situation like this, everybody makes up their own minds about how believable the information is; for what it's worth, I found it quite convincing. Anyhow, eightpoint's admin initially strongly backed the moderator, and accusations of bad faith went in both directions. The moderator stepped down and left but it's hard to recover trust after a situation like that.

EDIT: @jenalyze gave the abuser's name elsewhere in the thread.

Good call!

Agreed that there are plenty of problematic instances led by cis people that everybody federates with, including mastodon.social. For eightpoint, I don't know how many instances have and haven't refederated ... for that matter I don't even know how many defederated originally. Some instances see it the way you do: the abuser's gone, so as long as there's no continued problems, refederating makes sense. Those who are still defederated probably see it as a question of ongoing safety: the admin mistakenly trusted and gave power to an abuser, and then defended them, so they're likely to make similar mistakes in the future. It's a matter both of moderation philosophy and reactions to the specifics of this situation.

Thanks for the update. The outbound queue is held in RAM ... what could possibly go wrong? 😂

Eight days later: KBin, Lemmy, the landed gentry, and the rise of the "threadiverse" (DRAFT) (privacy.thenexus.today)

Tens of thousands of people have signed up for KBin and Lemmy accounts since I first published "Don’t tell people “it’s easy”," hundreds of new instances have been created, and "the threadiverse" is suddenly a hot topic of conversation.... Of course, it hasn't all gone smoothly, but the opportunity isn't going away.

Thanks Kaiity and Ada for all your hard work on this!!!!!

As a long-time fediverse user, based on your description of the situation here, it sounds like you made a good decision. If and when they get a hand on their moderation issues you can refedederate. As you say current tools are minimal, and defederation is a very blunt tool, but it’s the only option in a situation like this.

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

💯. The mod tooling is virtually non-existent so there aren’t any other viable options

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Good perspectives, I totally agree it’ll be a big challenge here as the fediverse gets bigger. Mastodon’s already had a couple of waves of spam - Brian Krebs had a good article a few weeks ago

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If it’s straightforward, I’d Very much support this!

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah as you say it's pretty magical ... although also janky. It really does show the possibilties of federation in a way that mastodon by itself never seemed to. And @stanleytweedle great analogy to BBSes!

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Did he answer that? 🤣

jdp23,
@jdp23@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That's great to hear -- and well said @Zoop. Burnout's a huge risk in situations like this, so very glad you're taking care of yourself.
