@vga256 It’s so weird having played Realmz on Mac and seeing the shared lineage with Exile. I knew about it at the time, but it may as well have said it shared a character editor with a game from another dimension.

@vga256 Seriously! I read about Jeff Vogel and his eternal dedication to the Exile/Avernum franchise a few years back and it really made me wish I had played them at time and not just seen them as an alien side-show. It's not too late, since, as you say, it's on its Nth cycle of reincarnation.

@hobbsc @vga256 @ThreeOhFour Boy, I could gush about Castle of the Winds too. It absolutely in the same family of roguelike/D&D-alike small-dev shareware games. The earnestness of all of them is off the charts and I love it.

@vga256 When chatting with my wife about it, I nabbed this screenshot of the 2.x version of the game’s character creator - the character portraits are even crappier but ooze the same earnestness. It’s so obvious from games like this when it was a solo dev or small team trying desperately to make the game they wished existed, and I love it so much.

@vga256 Fortunately, my teenage memories are filled with both. I have distinct memories of being glitched through the early high-level door by guild mates taking advantage of the severe lag of 14.4-or-whatever dialup.

@vga256 I’m going to have to fire it up at some point, either solo or on the resurrected service. I remember that trilogy being dorky but good. I also have very fond memory of people explaining how to rename my character to show my guild tag, since it wasn’t a real thing in the game.

@hankg I used the heck out of WindowBlinds when using Windows, especially 2000. The whole Object Desktop suite was full of bizarre tools to go way too far with, and it was great.
