The AI techbros wanna scare you with tales of AI becoming sentient and going rogue to destroy us all, when corporations, mindless machines made out of people to maximize profits at all cost, are already doing all that

Promoting nazism IS inherently putting people in danger, that IS their thing

Israel using Meta's WhatsApp to kill Palestinians in Gaza through AI system (www.middleeastmonitor.com)

According to software engineer and blogger, Paul Biggar, however, one key detail on the methods employed by the Lavender system that is often overlooked is the involvement of the messaging platform, WhatsApp. A major determining factor of the system’s identification is simply if an individual is in a WhatsApp group containing...

I understand your position and hate that we live in a shitty world where that choice is forced on people, but from what i see it from here, you guys have a choice between choosing the guy who’s not good but is at least doing some good, and the active fascist idolizing Hitler, with every neutral vote being effectively helping the fascist.

Not much of a choice, yes, but that’s where you are, and any vote not going to the not good guy will help the fascist. So that’s your choice, will you choose to fly over the cliff along with everybody else in the rest of the car or help avoiding that?

So, let me see if i understand the argument: Discord, a piece of closed source software which is very popular at the moment because they hit first (user inertia) and haven’t yet ramped up the enshittification (but sooner or later will because they already announced the intention to go the IPO route), wins over free software alternatives because of a 100% unofficial bot designed to help with one tiny niche user case most users of the platform haven’t even heard about, which is itself free software and therefore could be migrated and/or adapted to other free software?

I’m not sure the argument is very solid

I dislike when they say in news clips that Signal represents the “current gold standard” for E2EE chats, it doesn’t, Signal is a helluva lot better than the commercial stuff that mines user data but there’s stuff like SimpleX Chat that doesn’t leak even metadata because it doesn’t have it.

Still, this is a good thing, these megacorps have their iron grip on people because they have raised walls around their services making it painful for people to move to a different service, tearing down those walls can only help us all.

Tibor betrayed us and sold the Simple Apps suite to a sleazy adtech company a while ago, there were multiple posts on this suggesting replacements, then one of the most active devs forked it into Fossify, removing all the branding and references to the original, work is still ongoing on this, already some of the apps have been rereleased, here’s a handy matrix of the progress on the rerelease from somebody on Github

I’d say while it’s possible it’s unlikely, remember that they’re running PC games, all based on X86, the work needed to make Wine/Proton run all of that well on a different CPU set is significant, and would likely break compatibility in unexpected ways, effectively bringing all the recent wins moot and bringing Proton backwards. Definitely something that will likely happen, but more of a long-term goal (unless it’s already in progress and with advances, no idea, but we would all have heard of it already if it was a thing)

People only offer derision towards people who fall for this (which is absolutely reasonable), but only a few see it as the fucking tragedy it is, no one gives a fucking shit about young men and their issues or gives them support, who are then taken wholesale by THESE bastards and turned into incels and/or nazis, had young men had any support from decent people we might have less people on the side of the bastards

We were considering Vault, I guess we’ll look into alternatives now, are there any decent Free Software ones in the first place?

It just invents the answer out of thin air, or worse, it gives you subtle errors you won’t notice until you’re 20 hours into debugging

What could remotely go wrong with creating a permanently online countrywide database of biometric data?

Google is working on essentially putting DRM on the web (github.com)

The much maligned “Trusted Computing” idea requires that the party you are supposed to trust deserves to be trusted, and Google is DEFINITELY NOT worthy of being trusted, this is a naked power grab to destroy the open web for Google’s ad profits no matter the consequences, this would put heavy surveillance in Google’s...

When you think about it it's so weird that it feels like a novelty when a website works well as a website without needing dedicated software, but that's enshittification for ya, has us so used to that artificial barrier that we accept it as normal when it isn't

OK, anyone can create a community on that instance so this is not yet a reflection of their values. HOWEVER, if that instance is still there after a bit it DOES say a lot about that instance and specially about the admins

Meta made a secret meeting with signed NDAs with the admins of multiple Matodon instances in preparation for their upcoming Twitter alternative. This of course wasn't taken lightly by people and has caused divisions. This is what i think the best summary of some of the inter-instance drama that happened, maybe the best summary of events in general ever made on the history of the Fediverse

This video by supermarket-brand Thor should give you a much more grounded perspective. No, the chances of any of the LLMs turning into Skynet are astronomically low, probably zero. The AIs are not gonna lead us into a robot apocalypse. So, what are the REAL dangers here?

  • As it's already happening, greedy CEOs are salivating at the idea of replacing human workers with chatbots. For many this might actually stick, and leave them unemployable.
  • LLMs by their very nature will "hallucinate" when asked for stuff, because they only have a model of language, not of the world. As a result, as an expert said, "What the large language models are good at is saying what an answer . And this is a fundamental limitation of all these models, it's not something that can be patched out of them. So, bots will spew extremely convincing bullshit and cause lots of damage as a result.
  • NVidia recently reported the earnings they've gotten thanks to all this AI training (as it's heavily dependent on strong GPUs), a trillion dollars or something like that. This has created a huge gold rush. In USA in particular is anticipated that it will kill any sort of regulation that might slow down the money. The EU might not go that route, and Japan recently went all in on AI declaring that training AIs doesn't break copyright. So, we're gonna see an arms race that will move billions of coin.
  • Both the art and text AIs will get to the point where they can replace low level people. They're not any danger towards proper experts and artists, but students and learners will be affected. This will kill entry position jobs. How will the upcoming generations get the experience to actually become trained? "Not my problem" will say the AI companies and their customers. I hope this ends up being the catalyst towards a serious move towards UBI but who knows.

So no, we're not gonna see Endos crushing skulls, but if measures aren't taken we're gonna see inequality go way, WAAAY worse very quickly all around the world.
