As countries look for ways to move away from fossil fuels, nuclear fission technology is poised for a comeback. At COP28 last year, 20 nations decided to triple their nuclear energy capacity in the next 25 years but plans for long-term storage of spent fuel have yet to be drawn up.

Where the alchemists failed, former scientists from CERN have been able to succeed. Using a particle accelerator, the researchers propose using a slightly radioactive element such as thorium and transmuting it into an isotope of uranium.

The technology is the brainchild of Carlo Rubbia, the former director-general of the physics laboratory at CERN.

While Rubbia might have had access to a particle accelerator at his old workplace, nuclear energy plants do not have the same luxuries. Building a particle accelerator near each plant can be quite expensive, considering that CERN spent nearly US$5 billion to deliver the Large Hadron Collider.

The other challenge is the opposition to nuclear technology itself. Interesting Engineering has previously reported how Germany phased off its nuclear power plants. Switzerland, too, has similar plans for its four existing nuclear power production facilities.

According to the Swiss national body, Transmutex’s technology could help reduce the volume of nuclear waste generated by 80 percent and reduce the time it remains radioactive to less than 500 years. More importantly, the technology could also be applied to 99 percent of existing nuclear waste.

Supertramp’s 1974 hit single “Dreamer” is one of their most iconic songs. The song was written by Roger Hodgson and released on their album “Crime of the Century”. The song stayed on top of the US Billboard charts for three weeks and still remains an iconic song of the 70s. “Dreamer” explores themes of individualism, imagination and non-conformism in society. Let’s take a deeper look into the meaning behind “Dreamer”.

The lyrics of “Dreamer” are simple yet profound. The song is an ode to dreaming big and following one’s heart no matter the obstacles. The opening lines of the song set the tone, “Dreamer, you know you are a dreamer, I said dreamer, you’re nothing but a dreamer, you can fly, you can fly, High”.

The song continues with the lyrics “Dreamer, you’re still a little dreamer, Well nobody knows where you’re been, or what you’ve seen. Dreamer, you’re still a little dreamer, Well if you’re gonna make a dream come true, You gotta wake up and work for it, Cause no one’s gonna do it for you”. The song talks about the importance of hard work to realize one’s dreams and being persistent against all odds.

oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-drea…

Roger Hodgson wrote the song when he was 19, and it became one of the first the band recorded. It was the first charting hit, reaching in the UK and (a live single version) in the US. He recorded the demo of the song with vocals, cardboard boxes used for percussion, and an electric piano.

I was excited – it was the first time I laid hands on a Wurlitzer.

Roger Hodgson describes how “the song exploded out of me” in this interview in LA in 2013 (last clip).

From their much acclaimed third album Crime of the Century, their first gold record.

The album can be loosely termed “concept album”, dealing with a young man’s loneliness, emotions and personal struggle. For example, “School” deals with Paranoia.

Wow, thanks for sharing, added to my play list!

The band’s guitarist/singer and main songwriter Karl Pedersen had this say about the new track: “Dog Days portraits late nights in big concrete cities, filled with seemingly never ending anxiety. Aimless wandering in high intensity traffic. Fighting «the man» under strobing neon lights in a POV and resolution that resembles a brawl in “Punk Alley” from the Playstation classic Tekken 3.”

spoiler [sad info]>Dedicated to bassist Eivind Imingen, who decided to end his life just following the recordings of the album, “Burnout Codes” is shrouded in sadness and tragedy, and shows the Norwegian collective offering their most textured and innovative album to date.

Random reply, please bear with it hahaha

You are correct in hinting at that possibility being low…;‘“not good like 1 out of 100”, “more like 1 in a million”, “So you’re telling me there’s a chance”[1]’, hahaha

The dozens of us that keep dreaming will continue to walk down the ‘boulevard of broken dreams’[2].

I hope more of us will continue to learn and see past the status quo constrains, But all I have to do is dream [3], to see a better future for the working class!

Yes, but do not forget this major goal of 3rd Parties!:

Ah, if he gets over 5% the party should be able to recieve public funding for the next election cycle!

According to the Federal Election Commission, if a third party gets over 5 percent of the popular vote, they’re eligible for public funding in the next election cycle.

You are right, then as an aside, 5% is a goal that the dozens of us that support 3rd parties are looking foward to!

Next election the machine will continue to push out more puppets for the duopoly, which tend to closely follow the status quo and help the owner class.

I do not think RFK Jr. may be forgotten if he breaks the record, of 5%, for 3rd parties.

You are correct.

I’m just a Dreamer [1].

@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, true.

I am incorrect, the 5% record would be for any party that have not reached that before, while also being an even bigger goal of keeping up the percentage for the next cycle.

Seems Perot reached it but was unimportant due to his debate performance…

Based on his performance in the popular vote in 1992, Perot was entitled to receive federal election funding for 1996. Perot remained in the public eye after the election and championed opposition to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). During the campaign, he had urged voters to listen for the “giant sucking sound” of American jobs heading south to Mexico should NAFTA be ratified.

Perot tried to keep his movement alive through the mid-1990s, continuing to speak about the increasing national debt. He was a prominent campaigner against NAFTA, and frequently claimed that American manufacturing jobs would go to Mexico. On November 10, 1993, Perot debated with then-Vice President Al Gore on the issue on Larry King Live with an audience of 16 million viewers. Perot’s behavior during the debate was a source of mirth thereafter, including his repeated pleas to “let me finish” in his southern drawl. The debate was seen by many as effectively ending Perot’s political career. Support for NAFTA went from 34% to 57%.

Mutation Has Led to a New Type of Cat, Scientists Say [Sharon Adarlo | May 25 24 | Futurism] (futurism.com)

A research team has identified a new type of cat which has the typical adorable face and fur pattern of the black and white tuxedo cat, but with a difference: the fur on this feline’s back starts off with a solid color at its base, such as black, and gradually turns white at the tip — all caused by a unique mutation....

Profit>people

The free market only gives insurance to ‘the people’ in the danger prone communities only when profit margins are big enough for the companies liking.

Damned be, the people that grew up and live their…

Co-ops and other community-first based company would be a great replacement form the profit hungry and greedy companies.

This guy defended the Jan 6 riots on extremely flimsy ground (his thesis falls in line with the rest of conservatives: that it was a peaceful demonstration that got out of hand).

Seems that is what the status quo and legacy media was saying about other protests going on in the past and currently, just take a look at Black Lives Matter and Anti-Genocide protests.

Major difference is that social media has had a great impact against what the propaganda machine tries to push, but do not forget, these are also being censored by gov’t and the owner class to a certain degree.

Not only that, but he goes to bat for Trump pretty often, of all people.

He is going after specifics not only just because he is Trump… I would take another look at what he was explaining when talking about Trump.

Many of his points will be push back at the general propaganda and smears our politicians and legacy media is enforcing on us so as to try to sway the working class toward the status quo.

That is why there is an increase of people that do not believe anything that politicians or legacy media spews to the working class.

It’s par the course for the rest of the anti-establishment enlightened centrists (see Pin Tool and the likes). Not impressed.

Not too sure what you mean by this or the people you meantioned?

Enlighten centrists, not sure how he would fit that label…

Here are some videos about Glenn, seems to still be keeping his morals till this day as well.

Edit: improved wording, a bit

But Jan 6 was a violent insurrection into what is the most important day in our electoral process: the day when the peaceful transfer of power is meant to occur and anyone trying to draw parallels between that and BLM rioters is actively engaged in subverting our democracy. You can whine about media obfuscation all day long, but we all saw the video footage and we all knew what day of the year it was.

Yes, I also saw what legacy media release and what other independent media release.

Similar to all protests, the people breaking the law are to be punished and all that, but do not forget that they are usually really small percentage of these people that are violent, when comparing a few violent people to the full size of the protest.

Yeah, the anti-establishment schtick is getting old. Glenn is part of the fraternity of ultimate skeptics -when it’s convenient, of course. And frankly, the theatrics are getting old.

Not sure what you mean by this… it may just be our political bubbles that make it difficult to understand each other at a quick matter and just with a few replies and comments.

I do not support or am a part of the duopoly, so that will also differ a lot on how we view gov’t and the people that control our politicians, the owner class.

I am more of a revolutionary than a reformist, so that is a major difference we have.

In a simple to understand and basic outline, I see Jan. 06 event, IMO, as an unorganized riot similar to when a certain sports team losses and they go ham at what is near by, only a few are extremly violent while letting out frustration.

Few or little of the protestors were openly showing their 2A given rights, compared to how the Black Panther Parties would be in the presence of police and and other gov’t dogs that do their bidding.

The Black Panther Party is a greater group I would align with than the unorganized Jan. 06 riots that were gov’t backlash.

Sadly, the Black Panthers and many great activists that fight against the status quo are killed or under great surveillance by our fascist government and police state.

jimmydoreisalefty,
@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

It seems to me that you are just following everything the propaganda machine is pushing out.

Do not forget to be crticial and to question legacy media talking points.

We need to keep remembering how legacy media pushed Oct. 07 talking points, only until independent journalists debunked it, then people started to question and become more criticial thinkers, which benefits humanity.

I would suggest to see what other independent jouarnalists had to say about Jan 06; aside from just reading, the status quo narrative pushed by our politicians, owner class.

jimmydoreisalefty,
@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

Well, there is a reason the populist and many of us have lost trust on media, the distrust keeps increasing instead of decreasing as time goes on and legacy media keeps doing what they do best.

It would be awesome if you could make some time to watch this debate, increasing the speed or reading transcipts is an option as well or download and listen to go the go (I use an apk(app) that lets me do that for free), I prefer seeing the facial cues and emotion heard when people talk/debate/discuss:

Munk Debate - Mainstream Media ft. Douglas Murray, Matt Taibbi, Malcolm Gladwell, Michelle Goldberg [01:40:24 | Dec 08 22 | Truthspeak] youtu.be/nvaf7XOOFHc

On the PRO side of the debate were Douglas Murray (The Spectator) and Matt Taibbi (TK News on Substack). On the CON side of the debate were Malcolm ‘Malc’ Gladwell (The New Yorker, Revisionist History) and Michelle Goldberg (The New York Times).

At the beginning of the debate, 48% voted in favour of the resolution, while 52% voted against the resolution.

I thought it was a great debate, but they should have found better people for the CON side; to me, it is an endeavour that will result in failure, but compelling points can still be made, so as to make us question and critic our way of thinking and the way we view the world.

I am not the biggest fan of Douglas Murray, but he debated well with his points.

I now plan to make some time to rewatch it again, hahaha

Thank you for engaging in a discussion with me!

I am stubborn and hard heading on topics that interest me a lot, and I know I may hold the wrong views, but I know as time passes I may keep learning and talking with people so as to realign my views on certain topics!

Have an awesome day and wish you the best!

jimmydoreisalefty,
@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

Seems it was a push by the owner class, people at the top of the LP that may have pushed it.

RFK Jr.'s VP is also a billionaire so funding potential and influence is quite high on that end, not to mention the Kennedy name has a lot of connections.

All this people are part of the ‘swamp’ Trump claims to be against, but in reality that only try to tailor their talks to the working class, then once in office they continue the status quo for the most part.

I’m trying to give this new LP leadership a chance

Yes, I also prefer to make up my own mind about people instead of just hearing things about them second hand, so as to realign my views on said people.

Always good to make some time to watch major videos like this.

I already know RFK Jr. lied about being anti-war and being america first, seems he is Israel first, as well as other politicians trying to appeal to the working class.

Good luck on finding the party affiliation that fits your policy and views!

jimmydoreisalefty,
@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, great that you decided already, hahaha

That was quick! Nice, none duopoly parties are much better, but they do tend to struggle to take off at the local level, grassroots takes a bit and hard work from community.

Go for it!

I would suggest to join your local council as a start, if you would like to…, and start networking with people so as to start the process required to get voters and supporters.

Sounds good, you do not want to just go off of party teams, we need to make sure to see what policies fit while what is just talk versus what will they really fight for; I’ve made that mistake before, hahaha

jimmydoreisalefty,
@jimmydoreisalefty@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, some of my friends were really into Ron Paul, they keep bringing him up not too long ago also, hahaha

I didn’t know why but compared to the status quo he is much better on things that the working class would benefit from.

Yes, both blue and red team try to appeal to a certain group but they just end up losing more support in the end, hahaha

Ah, that is a good choice so as to have competition where their is none! Always best to be as direct as possible since you are not to worried about the outcome, win-win solution it seems, hahaha

Careful you might win though, hahahaha
