Activists rally to save Internet Archive as a lawsuit from publishers threaten to shut it down https://decrypt.co/31906/activists-rally-save-internet-archive-lawsuit-threatens

If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.

Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.

Here's some updates on the publishers' lawsuit vs. the Internet Archive which could very well mean the end of the not only the archive but libraries in general.

First, here's a good detailed primer of what the IA is facing just like what I shared above. https://www.thenation.com/article/society/publishers-are-taking-the-internet-to-court/

Then back in June, both the Internet Archive and publishers have requested a pre-motion conference on a motion for summary judgment, hoping to settle the matter without needing a full trial. https://torrentfreak.com/publishers-internet-archive-both-seek-piracy-lawsuit-win-without-full-trial-220614/

So basically it means that a federal judge will rule on the suit instead of a jury, which can take place at the end of this year or early next. https://www.dailydot.com/debug/internet-archive-lawsuit/

We'll see what happens there but the point is the same: the Copyright Cartel and publishers want to kill libraries as we know it and this is the first major step into that goal.

It's time to archive the Archive turn it unto a decentralized platform before it's too late. I hope someone out there is working on that plus libraries need to do this too.

I'll leave this with a simple fact: If were invented today or in recent times, the Copyright Cartel and publishers would both ensure that they would not be allowed to exist.

Huge Update: Big and the Cartel's lawsuit against the @internetarchive will have oral arguments on March 20. https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/publisher-news/article/91587-oral-argument-set-in-internet-archive-copyright-case.html

Like I said, this will determine the future of not only the where a bad ruling effectively kills a vital service but the existence of as we know it today.

Here's @team with their statement: https://www.fightforthefuture.org/news/2023-02-23-statement-major-decision-on-libraries-digital-rights-a-step-closer-on-march-20

With oral arguments of this monumental case set to begin on Monday (yes THIS Monday), here's Maria Bustillos (@maria) with a post today on what's at stake as Big Publishing and the Copyright Cartel looks to effectively kill the @internetarchive and perhaps libraries with a victory. https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/internet-archive-publishers-lawsuit-chatbot/

Long story short, not only this affects the future of the and altogether but also (as mentioned) fact checking and truthful information as well.

A group of say that the @internetarchive is a library which that the four major publishers' lawsuit against them threatens the development of both print and digital collections. https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2023/03/17/librarians-should-stand-internet-archive-opinion

Today is the day oral arguments officially start in the Big Publishing/Copyright Cartel's lawsuit against the @internetarchive which would effectively kill the great service and perhaps altogether if it goes their way.

Here's a couple of posts on how we got here: https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/20/23641457/internet-archive-hachette-lawsuit-court-copyright-fair-use

https://www.battleforlibraries.com/

And here's the oral argument schedule and how to be involved since this will affect all of us one way or another... http://blog.archive.org/2023/03/17/heres-how-to-participate-in-mondays-oral-arguments/

Here's a couple of articles to read post hearing and now we'll wait it out.

Ars' Ashley Belanger with a post titled: "Book publishers with surging profits struggle to prove hurt sales" https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/book-publishers-with-surging-profits-struggle-to-prove-internet-archive-hurt-sales/

And Mike Masnick (@mmasnick) with this fitting title: "Book Publishers Won’t Stop Until Are Dead" https://www.techdirt.com/2023/03/22/book-publishers-wont-stop-until-libraries-are-dead/

No matter what happens, I'm sure this will be appealed and it's likely that SCOTUS will have to be involved in the not too distant future.

Very gutted to hear this decision on a Friday Night Dump no less. I already said this will be appealed no matter what happens but it's not looking good for the future of the @internetarchive and most likely as we know them and I hope the Second Circuit understands what's at stake. https://www.docdroid.net/qM0MbI7/ia-sjm-order-pdf
