I am in Paris tomorrow and Saturday, and am planning my routes

8.7 of 9.9km on cycle lanes

Ahhhhh 😍

My planning in Paris is no longer “will it be OK to cycle?” which it was a few years ago, to “sure it will, just what's the best route?”

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Lyle Indeed. It's amazing, and brilliant. And on my regular route (Gare du Nord to Gare Bercy) there is a brand new extra wide lane currently being built north of Republique. It's so good.

@jon@gruene.social avatar

@alex_cello Thanks for the tip! Amended accordingly :-) Now if only Komoot had that sort of info too!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@corentin Yes, and damn. The way they were laying out the stones looked like a new cycle lane! @Lyle

🎶 calling SNCF 🤙 ...

@lewd “Mais est-ce que vous avez consideré covoiturage?”

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd Tu voulais seulement le supplement TGV pour Interrail? Et ca aussi n'est plus à acheter par telephone? FFS.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd HAAAAAA. Amazing. 😀

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd OK, aside from laughing at them, this cannot be connected to all the Résarail / SNCF Connect stuff can it? This I presume is just a combination of stupidity and malevolence?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd The ultimate TGV: no interim stops, no windows, no doors, but 100% full despite no way to buy tickets for it. And then it goes 320km/h the whole way, at times no one wants.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@tristramg @lewd Perhaps - if we're forgiving - 1 for in and 1 for out, with a one way system inside? And annoucements every 30 seconds to tell you to move along?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@tristramg @lewd Oh and also no luggage space at all. You hire your clothes at your destination.

Is there no longer a direct TGV or Frecciarossa service between Lyon and Turin? 😳 @jon do you happen to know what’s up there?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@julienmarchal Landslide blocked the track near Modane - already autumn of last year. Stabilising the mountain is complicated. It might reopen from this autumn.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@julienmarchal Only Trenitalia ran direct. It wasn't fast though, probably 4 hours Lyon-Turin, and 4.30 or 4.45 to Milano.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@julienmarchal That high speed project though... Improving the connection to the tunnel, French side, is turning into a damned nightmare. You also need to double track St André le Gaz - Chambéry.

23 pages of manure (literally, sometimes. I hate manure) that is the extreme-right Dutch Agreement can contain interesting stuff nevertheless. For there's two sentences (both on page 9):

  1. 'In the border regions, good rail connections with the neighboring country are essential.'
  2. ´There will be a proposal for cross-border rail transport, including the connection of five train stations to international HSL lines (e.g. Hengelo, Venlo, Heerlen, Groningen and Zwolle).' (1/3).
jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick HSL in Heerlen? WHAT? And upgrading Venlo?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick Germany will get there eventually from Gronau, but the lines are all single track still. So those are never going to be more than branch lines.

The real one Netherlands should do would be electrify Groningen - Bad Nieuweschans.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@patrick Ha. All right.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@rrustema Yeah, well, sort of. That's what I hate about this entire "Wunderline" project - each side points the finger at the other. Because the Germans didn't double track the bridge is no reason for the Dutch to not electrify their line. Oh and Leer - Oldenburg is also single track, and knackered, but is at least electrified. @patrick

“When I see people say Eurostar is shrinking it drives me crazy, because it’s really not true,” says CEO Cazenave to the FT

https://www.ft.com/content/97f7a39b-0536-40e2-bbdd-e1d755418804

Yeah, because you merged with Thalys - so, surprise surprise, you transported more people

Passenger numbers London - Paris/Bruxelles are still down on the last pre-pandemic year, not least because Eurostar now no longer serves Ebbsfleet and Ashford

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@mschfr And when it serves fewer stations and at markedly higher prices than before the pandemic - neither of those factors is going to help either!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@TimWardCam Sure. There are many reasons why it is likely down. But to claim it's not down is simply wrong - the group's numbers are only up because of the merger!

(FWIW trying to work out if air in a train is safe has been an absolute pain - I’ve got pretty much nowhere in my efforts to understand it)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@statsguy Sure, the border checks don't help. But if you only serve St Pancras, and no longer Ebbsfleet and Ashford, you compound your problem there - because the station is so small. So you end up transporting fewer passengers, total, but each of them paying a higher fare on average.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jimh Of course some of those passengers will have then boarded in London instead, but there is some massaging of the figures going on here for sure.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Caffetino Explained in a LOT of detail here: https://jonworth.eu/the-future-of-long-distance-train-services-through-the-channel-tunnel/

But in short: money. Eurostar wants to profit maximise, regardless of what Cazenave says. She sees no economic benefit to those stations. A competitor might. But competitors have other huge hurdles to overcome. And UK government doesn't care.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@orangerkater @statsguy Not quite. There would be a cost for Eurostar to keep those terminals open, but had Eurostar been willing to finance keeping border controllers there I am sure the UK government would have had nothing against it.
