Karlovy Vary ist auch bei Regen ganz nett, aber der Bahnhof ist höher gelegen als die Innenstadt. Es gibt aber noch einen schicken "unteren" Bahnhof im Ostblock-Stil und just von dort fährt mein "RegioShark" nach Johanngeorgenstadt ab. 🇨🇿🇩🇪

  1. 'In the border regions, good rail connections with the neighboring country are essential.'

Der Bahnausbau nach Mühldorf ist eine Endlos-Geschichte. Die Bahntechnik stammt noch aus der Prinzregentenzeit – vor 1900. Seit Jahrzehnten soll die eingleisige, nicht elektrifizierte Strecke ausgebaut werden. Ist es jetzt endlich so weit?

We’ve got another example of that legendary cooperation between state railways today in Köln

Where the Eurostar* stops at the platform is NOT shown on the screens (while for RE and ICE trains it is shown)

So Eurostar employs a person on the platform to tell passengers where to stand 🤦‍♂️

A lot of things went wrong on this train, but the ČD/JLV @diningcar didn't disappoint. As always, great coffee, and while they had no payment terminal, they were happy to accept payment by a SEPA bank transfer.

DB ICE 731 Hamburg - Köln

A slowish route because all the infra is old. And it’s a ICE 1 from the 1980s, renovated more than a decade ago

But the ambience on board, the comfort of the seats, are still excellent. It’s like someone actually thought “what would passengers actually appreciate in a train interior?”

It doesn’t feel like packing as many people in as possible was the priority. And that’s so nice 😊

Fuck off really.

In the train to Hamburg. A dude starts playing music on his phone loudly. I ask him to use earphones. He says he has none. And he gets aggressive towards me and asks me to move. And then accuses me of being aggressive because I got annoyed. 😡

But at least he stops playing the music.

@jon The 27 minutes in Lille are really convenient if you need to move from one end of the first train to the other end of the other one because you had to buy two separate tickets because the Carte Avantage only applies on domestic tickets. Or because there were no seats available all the way from the south to Bruxelles. Or both.

@jon passenger information is not good either: I was trying to use that train last year when there was strike action in a french signal box. no one in Italy was able to tell me whether the train was running or not, even at the counter in Ventimiglia (turns out it was not actually). In Trenitalia IT systems, the train does not exist outside of Italy.

@partim @jon Trenitalia printed timetable tells me, that between French station SNCF tarification applies. So a simple TER ticket (even for one TER before or later) should do the job.

If only my knowledge of EU law had the desired impact this fast every time 🙂

My father wanted to pay a EDF French electricity bill from a Belgian bank account, and was told that this was not possible because the bank was outside France

I formulated a stern email to EDF for him, in French, stipulating this was not allowed as a reason within the Single European Payment Area (SEPA), and within a few hours they relented in a grovelling email!

Heute geht es weiter Richtung Rumänien.
Dazu wird am frühen Morgen des Karfreitag ein Desiro Richtung Добрич (Dobrich) bestiegen. Anfangs dieselt der etwas auf der elektrifizierten Strecke entlang des Hafens von Варна (Varna), die ich gestern schon kennengelernt habe.
Dann zweigt die Strecke nach rechts/Norden ab und die Oberleitung hört nach einigen Kilometern auf, wenn auch Oberleitungsmaste noch einige Kilometer weiter stehen.
Die Gegend rund um Добрич (Dobrich) ist eine sehr vom Ackerbau geprägte Landschaft, davon sieht man allerdings wegen der hohen Büsche links und rechts der Strecke eher weniger.
In Добрич (Dobrich) steht dann schon die gewünschte Lok - eine Ludmilla - bereit. Diese hat einen Kursschlafwagen aus София (Sofia) und einen Sitzwagen bereits eine gute Stunde eher aus Варна (Varna) hierher gebracht. Jetzt fährt dieser übermotorisierte Zug mich Richtung rumänische Grenze nach Кардам (Kardam). Der Schlafwagen fährt ab jetzt leer und verschlossen mit; dieser ist auch nur bis Добрич (Dobrich) buchbar.

Haltepunkt Ботево, als Unterstand dient eine Hütte aus frischem Wellblech.
Bahnhof Добрич (Dobrich). Links im Bild das hohe Empfangsgebäude in sozialistischem Stil, daneben eine Ludmilla mit zwei Wagen und ein Siemens Desiro Classic.

The train terminates at Кардам (Kardam) which is about 5 km from the Romanian border. The following part of the line in Bulgaria is still in acceptable condition, e. g. the railway crossing is still maintained.
After I had to answer some stupid questions by the Bulgarian border police, I made my way into Romania. Unfortunately, the railway line is not very close to the road in Romania. But my impression from the distance was that the tracks are still usable.
The first railway station in Romania is Negru Vodă which isn't served by trains anymore. The tracks were in poor condition and need a lot of repair if you want to run trains there again.

Heute soll es heimwärts gehen. Zwei knappe Anschlüsse im französischen Zwangsreservierungsnetz machen mir noch Bauchschmerzen. Mal sehen, ob ich heute nach Hause kommen.

Einstweilen geht es mit der Großen WESTbahn (oder so) nach London.
Mit mir sind vier mutmaßliche Allgäuerinnen reiferen Alters im Wagen. 🤯
