Yall as someone who is striking and generally existing on a campus that is crawling with roughly one security guard per picketer from no fewer than 5 private security companies, if they even slightly change the laws so that private security get some form of qualified immunity or ability to use any amount of force we are totally fucked.

jonny,

We are being scrupulously disciplined with the private security guards ofc

jonny,

I know they already effectively can use force because of, you know, how policing and the justice system work in the US. And there are armed private guards, but i mean anything resembling the ability of cops....

There are So Many and they Explicitly Belong To The Rich For Hire

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

The cops have had a comparatively mild persistent presence themselves except for the first day where they immediately threatened to arrest me and a bunch of people for appreciating crosswalks next to a parking garage. They have showed up every time a conversation with a driver goes too long or we loiter around every crosswalk in some critical passageways. I think they are mostly letting private security bait encounters and waiting until they can arrest more people as examples

i don't know dear stalkerware operator, but maybe you should first make your google slides based internal issue tracker not just publicly accessible

Yesterday #UAW4811 rank and file successfully picketed unionized maintenance and delivery workers trying to work on water damage in #UCLA's Engineering 4 building. Today that building is shut down due to water damage. THAT is how you strike

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

Strikes need to be costly to work. I have a billion thoughts about how academic unions in universities have a differently configured plumbing of labor value than the usual retail/industrial workplaces canonical strike tactics are for, but the delivery picket is proving to be an extremely effective way of engaging with its dispersed work site, heterogeneously administered, many-overlapping-unit conditions. It's a really good balance of legal, accessible, costly, and involving other workers.

The accessible part is sort of a bunch of senses of accessible mashed together - eg. one could participate in a wheelchair or other mobility aide, and that would actually be even better than someone walking. You could do it without sight or hearing. Its outside and low density so low covid risk. It can be any time of day, and early is good too so in LA if you are sun sensitive you can go before dawn. You dont have to talk to anyone if you dont want to. Its easy to discover: just name a set of places and say "go to one in this time range," and you see it just by walking around. It has a broad and self-selectable range of legal risk (which often trades off with effectiveness) that includes 0. There is some risk of physical injury but that can be scaled by number of people per site, Etc.

Thats not to say its perfect. The part where its most not accessible is that it is in a specific location so travel and public and etc. More. But to highlight them when other concurrent strike tactics are failing at these in important ways.

one of the largest science buildings is now rationing CO2 because we have turned away so many gas deliveries. Maybe the scabs still working will have to stop their experiments anyway

What is our elected leadership even doing, they sent out an email at 9:30pm saying that all on campus strike events including pickets were cancelled and everyone should go downtown by 10am (aka leave west LA at 8am) to give comment at city council. Uh no we are still picketing loading docks and organizing targeted asks for TAs of large classes to not submit final grades and ignoring this top down order to do a pointless waste of time.

Ordering people to do shit with no input and then wondering why they dont show up is such a shitty strategy istg

Today the private security at were getting a little frisky on the picket lines and I think bought UC a few shiny new ULPs and lawsuits. They are increasingly using their bikes as weapons and barriers to legally protected crosswalk appreciation, and literally directed a truck to run me over in the crosswalk. They forget that they are just regular guys

found this old essay by ye olde rank and file vs. elected leadership in the , and i think that at least for ucla it can be said that it is different this time, and one of those ways is the increasing belief in the diversity of tactics and the ability to turn both stable modes of organizing into complementary rather than antagonistic ones, and it's my personal goal in the time i'm down here to work on the structural changes it would take to make that happen w.r.t. power sharing. an effectively structured union of 40k workers across all UCs would shake the heavens way more than it can right now, which is 'kinda surprisingly a lot but also still not as much as it should by a long shot' https://berkeleyjournal.org/2014/12/15/a-reality-check-for-social-movement-unionism/

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

to some degree the problems with this union can be succinctly characterized as the logical conclusion of representative electoralism, but i will hold on that until strike is over

jonny,

I had someone recognize me IRL from Online for the first time and it is such an odd experience. Like my mind went hello, are we friends? enemies? youre gonna have to show me a pfp. What version of online me do you know. But my mouth went "that is cool. Nice to meet you. Im going to go over here now"

Over and over and over again in organizing contexts from coops, to roomates, to event planning, to all flavors of union organizing, to lab organization, research projects, experiments themselves, musical ensembles... each of them reinvents some form of informational "garden and stream," a way to communicate naturally in series linked to some stable and graph/tree-like set of documents. Optionally intermediated by some governance process where the garden constrains the stream so that it can reshape the garden. Trying to not resolve, but give form and fluidity to the many flavors of this basic relationship is one lens for looking at what ive been doing for the last 10 years or so. Our tools for this are so bad and it has material consequences for our ability to organize, in the many senses of that word.

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

It sounds easy bc both can be technically expressed as the other relatively easily but the idioms of use are not very compatible at all.
