@gruber on the one hand it feels like a tiny bit of whimsy being removed, but on the other hand I don’t think I’ve actually used those stickers in 20+ years. They’re a holdover from when Apple was the underdog, but they don’t need free advertising anymore. And with the number of devices Apple sells, it probably does add up to a lot of material being saved. Overall I think it’s a good move.
@daringfireball the HP-branded iPod was one of the weirdest Apple deals ever. They printed a competitor’s logo on their own bestselling product! It would be like today’s Apple releasing a Samsung-branded iPhone; it sounds unthinkable. And HP-branded iPods couldn’t be serviced at Apple stores because they were technically HP products, even though they were identical except for the logo.
@gruber plus, it helped further cement the iPod’s status as the best digital music player: it was like HP was saying “fine, we’ll just ship iPods too since we know that’s what everyone wants anyway, and we can’t make anything better ourselves.”
Back in the old days when retina screens on iPhones were still relatively new, there was a long running joke about how iOS still showed a non-retina Apple Logo () during start-up. Eventually this was fixed, but for many iOS update cycles it was the first thing we'd check when a new iOS beta was released.
Saw the pixelated logo on the EyeSight screen today while turning on my Vision Pro, smiled nostalgically, and then got to wondering how long it will be until that screen will be retina too.
@_Davidsmith in the first version of macOS that supported retina displays (Mavericks?), they forgot to update the icon that appeared in the “low battery” notification. Drove me crazy!
@daringfireball I’m surprised you didn’t mention spatial photos or videos at all (the kind you take yourself, not the “Apple Immersive” ones). Is that just because there’s nothing new to report vs. previous demos? Still, that would’ve been the first thing I’d try if I had one of these!
@BasicAppleGuy I have one that’s not on here: the iPod Camera Connection Kit! It was a USB-A-to-30-pin dongle so you could connect a digital camera to your iPod and use its hard drive for photo storage. It was actually really handy because the iPod’s storage capacity was so much higher than the SD cards you could get at the time.
@daringfireball for a simpler analogy, what about how macOS only runs on Macs? Just like with iMessage, macOS isn’t actually “free,” but you get to use it for free (and receive free major updates) as a “perk” of purchasing Mac hardware.
@BasicAppleGuy I know people complain about the Magic Mouse, but personally I love it. Excluding the switch from replaceable to rechargeable batteries, the design has remained unchanged for nearly 15 years! That must be some sort of record: the current iPhone at the time the first model was introduced was the iPhone 3GS 😂
@daringfireball sounds like a very smart solution, but I don’t understand why it’s off by default. Yes, it’ll prevent a thief from getting into your phone if you have it enabled, but it won’t deter them from stealing your phone in the first place because they won’t know if you have it enabled or not. Whereas if all iPhones behaved like this by default, it would lessen the value of stealing them in the first place.
Does anything in the Apple multiverse sync less reliably than Shortcuts? It just botched all of my folders and organization for the umpteenth time. I can’t even imagine how infuriating this must be for people who are more serious Shortcuts users than me.
@gruber syncing in Apple’s Podcasts app has never worked for me (and is one of the reasons I switched to Overcast). I actually used it for a while without even realizing it was supposed to sync because it literally never did!
@marcoarment I only ever saw Phish live once, and they brought out B.B. King as a surprise guest! Nothing quite like the sound of 20,000 people losing their minds simultaneously 😂
