Had another, more wide-ranging, demo with Apple Vision Pro today. Ask me anything.

Me, sitting on a couch, wearing an Apple Vision Pro, making a pinch gesture with my right hand.

jenn,
@jenn@pixel.kitchen avatar

@gruber what were you doing in this photo because every photo i see of people using this headset has them looking like they’re seeing boobs for the first time

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jenn Just moving windows around, if I recall correctly. Pretty sure I was way more excited the first time I saw boobs. (No photos alas, so you'll have to take my word.)

jscari,
@jscari@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber is it possible to have overlapping windows in visionOS?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jscari Absolutely. There's a deep Z-axis, and you move windows on that axis the same way as on X and Y: with your pinched-finger-and-thumb hand.

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

@gruber I have a near-perfect prescription, but I’m guessing the eye tracking won’t be able to compensate for my strabismus?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@callme_jc Not sure, will try to find out. Do you suffer from double vision in regular life? Or when you’ve tried other headsets?

callme_jc,
@callme_jc@mastodon.scot avatar

@gruber Thank you. Not so much double vision, more like I can only “look” or focus through one eye at a time, switching between them fairly rapidly. It produces a slight squint in the “inactive” eye. Corrective lenses might dampen the effect: my prescription is within ZEISS’s acceptable range.

I’ve never tried on a AR headset before, but Vision Pro is the first headset with its heightened level of eye tracking that gives me pause.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@callme_jc That's not altogether unlike my vision, so maybe it'll work for you. For sure, you should try it in a store first!

msilpala,
@msilpala@qoto.org avatar

@gruber Any idea whether it will have a “guest mode" for letting other people try out the device?

I will be really sad if I can't easily let friends and family try out the Vision Pro experience. No, it won't fit their faces perfectly; but that's ok for a quick test drive. With retina-based locking, I worry that I would have to reset the whole system in order to let someone else use it.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@msilpala Yes, it's even called "guest mode”.

arguementclinic,

@gruber Can you load photos onto this if you don’t use iCloud Photo Library?

Kalani,
@Kalani@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Does the USB Port on the Vision Pro Battery support data (keyboards / thumb drives / computer syncing)? Or is it power only?

yar,

@gruber Is it possible to change the battery on the fly? I mean the additional one is quite useless otherwise 💁🏻‍♂️

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@yar My understanding is no, no swapping, so you'd need to shut down to swap. But I'll try to find out.

superchinois,

@gruber Could you use the device with contact lenses ?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar
bbbruce,

@gruber

Is hot-swapping batteries going to be possible?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@bbbruce Nope.

pmcg,
@pmcg@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @bbbruce That's too bad. I have a vague memory from long (very long!) ago that some PowerBooks could survive in sleep mode without a battery for about a minute, in order to swap batteries.

cduvenhorst,
@cduvenhorst@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber A little late to the show, but: How heavy is the device? Attached to your head for multiple hours, do you expect neck pain or muscle tension?

18+ Starfia,
@Starfia@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber

You've wrote about this recently: "spatial video" (as opposed to "immersive video") is literally just stereoscopic video, is it not? Depth is captured by the camera, but you can't arbitrarily move around it like you're in a video game or anything.

Doesn't that make this shot from the keynote seem particularly misleading? It strikes me as worse than the Apple Silicon performance graph stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYkq9Rgoj8E&t=5731s

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@Starfia Which shot is misleading to you?

18+ Starfia,
@Starfia@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber

The shot linked there, right at 1:35:31?

Because the home video's perspective apparently swivels a full 45 degrees in parallel with the presentation camera's perspective, the shot seemed to have been designed to illustrate that the depicted user could view the home video from other angles if he changed position in the room. (As though the video was some kind of evolved Lytro capture capable of allowing for that.)

tcngraham,

@gruber if you’re looking at, say, Daring Fireball in a web browser, how crisp is the text compared to looking at the same page on a 4K display on your desk?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@tcngraham Comparable. But the scale is different. On visionOS it’s like seeing a website in full screen mode on a 50-inch Retina display.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@gruber how do you know you're not still in the simulation?

benbuschmann,

@gruber Will I be able to order prescription lenses separately after I order the Vision Pro?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@benbuschmann I can't say with certainly but I'd be shocked if not. People's eyes change, lens will get lost, people will resell hardware. So of course they'll sell lenses separately. Like selling watch bands.

scanner,
@scanner@apricot.social avatar

@gruber oh, how do you do a screen cap or equivalent of an app?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@scanner Don't know!

clith,
@clith@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Where is the over-the-top band? Did you just decide to not use it, or is it not part of the shipping retail version?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@clith Apple announced last week that each Vision Pro comes with both a Solo Knit Band and a Dual Loop Band. I found the Solo Knit comfortable (as I have previously) so didn't want to waste my limited demo time with strap swapping.

mcelhearn,
@mcelhearn@journa.host avatar

@gruber All the demos show people sitting up, looking uncomfortable. Did you try lying down? If I was watching a movie, I wouldn’t sit on a sofa, I would lie down in a comfortable position. This could have an effect on the perception of weight of the device.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@mcelhearn I did not try lying down, if only because it'd feel like a weird thing to do in a room with Apple marketing and PR reps. And I'd never put my shoes on their couch, etc. It's certainly a reasonable use case though!

eierund,
@eierund@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber I have no doubts the Vision Pro will provide an incredible movie watching experience. Visually.

What about the audio, though? Cinephiles care about audio just as much as visuals and usually have multi speaker, Dolby Atmos, setups at home. Can the speaker in the Vision Pro compete with that?

If not will Apple let you airplay the Dolby Atmos mix to your home theater setup instead of using the onboard speaker?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@eierund I will try to find out about AirPlay, but for personal use, you'll want AirPods Pro or Max I think. The speakers are good, but they're not magic.

eierund,
@eierund@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber awesome! AirPods Pro (and even Max) just won’t be a match for a proper Dolby Atmos speaker setup. So at least from an audio perspective watching movies on Vision Pro could be a downgrade for cinephiles.

Dune without a hearty subwoofer just isn’t Dune.

Hopefully Apple has considered that and will let users output audio to AppleTV. 🤞🏻

macdigger,

@gruber In PSVR2, it’s always a hassle to try and adjust headset position (up-down, distance between the eyes) so that there’s no moire (I guess? When white pixels start kind of “splitting” into colored components)
Is that an issue at all with AVP?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@macdigger I don’t think so. Vision Pro displays are way above retina resolution for me at least.

macdigger,

@gruber Thanks! So I take it there’s no pretty narrow - like it is with PSVR2, if you ever tried it on - “sweet spot” in terms of the headset position alignment to make the image crisp. What I mean is PSVR2 can be and is sufficiently crisp (non-retina, of course), as long as it is aligned on your face in that sweet spot.

Feels like I’m trying to figure out the device asking questions that just don’t apply to its tech level though 🤔 As in figuring flat panel LCDs in terms of tube CRTs. IDK 🤷‍♂️

vanitalo,
@vanitalo@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Does it support the chefs kiss gesture? 😅

AndrewCarrier,

@gruber Apple Vision Pro or Tudor Pelagos FXD? I know which I’d rather blow $3,800 on.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@AndrewCarrier They both even come with a complimentary extra strap!

Filmgeek47,

@gruber Is the sound quality great for for tiny speakers on a headset, or just great?

imanrastegari,
@imanrastegari@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Are third-party Environments (like the Mos Eisley one you watched the Star Wars trailer in) available outside of the app they come with? For example, could I watch Ted Lasso (or browse Safari) on Tatooine, or is it limited to the Disney+ app?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@imanrastegari It's a little confusing, perhaps. The VisionOS system has immersive environments made by Apple. When using those environments you can open multiple apps in windows alongside each other in that environment. You twist the crown button to dial in/out how immersive those are.

The Disney+ ones are only inside the Disney+ app, and thus only available while watching Disney+ content. Think of it like a full-screen mode for Disney+, as opposed to "in a window” mode.

imanrastegari,
@imanrastegari@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber Gotcha, thanks for explaining. I was hoping that apps could make their custom environments available on the system level (kind of like third-party keyboards or other extensions on iOS), or even allow users to import their own (i.e. the spatial equivalent of setting a custom wallpaper). Hopefully that comes in the future!

christianmlong,
@christianmlong@wandering.shop avatar

@gruber Any idea how it would work for someone with reduced vision in one eye (20/200)? Hope your eyes are doing well now btw.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@christianmlong I wear prescription lenses such that my left eye sees 20/20, but my right eye is purposely blurry, because my right macula was damaged after a retina detachment a few years ago, and distorts my vision. Using Vision Pro I see as well as I do in real life or using a screen-based device.

(Took me a few weeks but my brain adjusted great to seeing sharp only in one eye.)

DannoHung,
@DannoHung@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber only question that matters: what is the quality of text rendering?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@DannoHung Excellent I think. But younger eyes than mine might be better judges.
