Took a break from working on SotW's music for a couple of days to transcribe the first movement of Weiss' 34th sonata in D minor.

I always feel like guitar is a close but inexact approximation of the lute. A bit more muscular, a bit less delicate, and lacking the deep basses from the lute's additional strings.

I was able to do a close transcriptions. Standard tuning, drop D, anything with C2 had to be done an octave up. Happy with this so far.

I worked off a few different transcriptions freely available online, plus Weiss' ur-text. I was amazed at how different they could be. Eg Eythor Thorlakkson's changes the bass around completely! I tried to stay as true as possible to Weiss' original and didn't add any cadenzas.

subscription is up at the end of May. I've got 10 units left in the Irish class. Wondering if I should speed run it and then not renew. Have had a lot of frustrations eg, extremely short reviews, or idiomatic English not being accepted.

A translation not accepted (wants an extra "that")

Feel like I've been listening to the Minibosses' Mega Man 2 compilation a lot lately. Dropping this for @jdcushman

Chatting with someone in the Discord channel about how certain mechanics should work in SotW, finding issues, and fixing them for the next release, which feels like such a long way off. No new release until music's done, and I refuse to even guess at an ETA for that.

juliancday,
@juliancday@writing.exchange avatar

@getter7seven We'll see! I'm not sure how much music I want to make for it. I think I have a good default track. I've got a bunch of other stuff too. This will be a big release on the order of when I did the sprites, or Carcassia.

You ever get someone who consistently shows up in your suggested follows on FB, etc, and you're sure you don't know them, 0 followers in common, but they keep showing up in the list of people that you do know, but don't want to add?

juliancday,
@juliancday@writing.exchange avatar

The suggested follow algorithms seem to know how to find close adjacency, and it's a little spooky when someone keeps showing up, and you're sure you don't know them, but what if you do.

Part of me wonders just how much chaos would occur if open source software maintainers of open source software being exploited by companies actively rebelled against them in some way.

juliancday,
@juliancday@writing.exchange avatar

@gavi One thing I think about a lot is how the view of open source has changed since I was a teenager in the 90s. Back then it felt like an idealistic movement, and now it feels like enabling the worst elements of a capitalistic society.

From my own perspective, I make a roguelike, who cares, it'll never get used beyond its very niche audience. But if my thing was eg audio encoding/capture, and it was being used for surveillance? Yeah.

Nothing quite so thoroughly trashes the ego like being introduced to someone, "I don't know if you know Julian?", I say oh yes, we've met, and the other person gets a panicked look because I know them but they don't remember me.

(We were part of a reading just before the pandemic with one other poet, and even signed each other's poems)

I worry a lot about what I say or do or put online because of how easily I can be googled, but it's clear I pass like a neutrino through most people's lives.

@HannahCelsius Oh, I'm the same. Very bad with names, especially, so I don't take it personally. But I'd be lying if I said it felt like nothing, either.

April 29: Do you share your name with other writers?

Yes. There's an English poet named Julian Day as well. Neither of us use initial(s). We were mutuals on Twitter (still are, but I left my account dormant last year), and on Bluesky, though he's not active there at the moment.

He mostly publishes in the UK and Ireland, I mostly publish in North America, though he's published over here, and I had a poem published by Banshee a few years back.

Today was a weird day for me and a hard day for some old friends. Social media feels like easymode compared to what we had before.

juliancday,
@juliancday@writing.exchange avatar

@turgon It's weird because I'm not gonna talk about it on the open internet but to talk around it, it feels like the way we get to know people online has changed a lot, that social media won't ever replicate the community feel of a message board (and Reddit only does very poorly), and that today I consider that both good and bad.

Suddenly remembering my 11th grade English teacher, who told us that she got her ass kicked in first year English due to turning in poor essays, and by God she wasn't going to let that happen to us.

I used to crank out 700+ per day when I was in the leagues, but I went on private last year after a bunch of my friends got found and added by someone from our collective past. I guess I went unnoticed (or uncared about), but I still dropped to private, and not having to care about relegation and promotion did wonders for my mental health.

Hearing about cohost's money issues and does cohost still not have an export feature? I have to rely on someone's Python script like I'm scraping my LiveJournal data? Oof.
