With renewed interest in the future of the web at the moment: I’d love to do more reporting* on network protocols, the W3C, Common Crawl, etc—and bring historical perspective to the subject— but I can’t currently make it work $$$-wise

If anyone hears of grants or other opportunities, please let me know!

We've got this cheap egg cooker that plays the loudest, most terrifying alarm you've ever heard when it's done cooking. My wife requested that I make it "less aggressive" so I hacked it into the most gentle egg cooker of ALL TIME

(warning: probably loud)

Before shot: egg cooker finishing an egg before modification. Jarring alarm goes off, I say "fuck!" After shot: egg cooker finishes. A few moments later, a small mechanical music box next to the cooker starts playing Pachelbel's Canon

Is there a sector of Mastodon? I want to repair the top flap of a leather bag that's basically two pieces of leather back to back that have come apart at the side seam. I'm pretty sure I just need to trim loose threads, apply a glue and clamp it, but what glue is right for the job? I have Gorilla fabric glue and Shoe Gloo available right now, but would using either of those be a mistake? Any help is gratefully received!

In 2006, I worked on a graduate degree in historic preservation. I was struck by the parallels with digital technology, and I pursued a graduate degree in lib/info sci to expand my knowledge & experience.

I don’t disagree that the Library of Congress needs more funding, but we also need a Digital Preservation Act on par with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. Preservation is local & diverse.

@skua While I deeply value the Internet Archive and the Library of Congress, we cannot depend on a single source for the preservation of knowledge.

We need multiple approaches, myriad sources of funding, and distributed expertise.

the inverse of "make sure you have working backups of what's important" is "give yourself permission to delete digital detritus that no longer has any value to your life"

you do not need every email you've received for the last decade.

you do not need three copies of every photo you've ever taken with your phone.

you do not need the downloads folder for each of your previous twelve laptops.

you can delete some stuff.

How to tell your OSS is ridiculously popular: people aren't 100% sure they didn't embed it, and tack on the software equivalent of "packaged in a facility where peanuts were also present" to the license list.

This watch contains software, so statistically probably contains at least traces of curl.
