Saw this elsewhere: Threads bonus program. I'm reading Cal Newport's "Digital Minimalism", which argues for a digital detox, an intentional philosophy towards the technology that shapes us. And it's hard not to see why: to see everything going through a handful of websites, a handful of visual metaphors, a handful of affordances.

But I'm reading it and bristling. I got to experience the internet before it all went to shit. And I want to scream. This could all be good! It doesn't have to be bad!

I've kept up with Mastodon because it feels like the most "old internet" of the social media options. At the same time, I've been making things on the web, in geminispace, things not under my real name. And it's been really good, but there's been a real lack of community. Neocities feels like 90s cosplay. Gemini's like sending transmissions in the dark. I can't help but feel like something's slipping away and I'm fighting it but I don't know how to bring it back.

Sitting outside on a rare sunny day at a lovely pub in Bray, refactoring Kitten* to pull out the settings page sections into their own pages (and use Kitten’s new Streaming HTML workflow**) and enjoying a yummy pint of Tundra IPA.

No complaints :)

Very smoky out this morning, the sun a deep orange. When Wally was a puppy three years ago, it was like this, though worse. Hotter, and the grass dry and stiff. I wrote about that smoky summer and @robmclennan published it at Dusie. It's one of the poems in my (still technically circulating?) MS.

Updating some SotW code I haven't really touched since 2012 (to hook in adding music and switching back after the user clears the --more-- message) and I'm pleased with my much-younger self, I think I only have to update a couple different functions, despite there being dozens of branches that lead there. Hard to explain. But the code's not terrible, thanks younger me!

Going to to out with the dogs in a bit to see if I can see anything, but my best view of the northern lights was back in university, I had pints with friends at our favourite pub, staggered off to 7-11 to drunk-buy candy, then watched the northern lights while sprawled out at a nearby soccer field.

My old one experienced a catastrophic crash. So I was there for...a year and a half? Feels like about the amount of time I used to spend in most places, back in the day. Tildes really do have that old internet feel, and not just because of the command line.
