A similar transition took place with mastodon.social and mstdn.social when they both grew prohibitively large; however, in that case, Mastodon now offers much better tooling for moderating and managing federation. Until Lemmy's software similarly matures, this is the best solution that Beehaw can put up.
For Lemmy, right now, this is basically the nuclear option. You will have to create an account on another to interact with content on lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. Although this could change in the future, what's needed right now is for improvements in the Lemmy codebase to allow for more granular control.
While Beehaw generally won't spin up more granular communities without a guarantee that (a) they can be properly moderated and (b) they will have a reasonable large of participants to warrant their existence - in the vein of keeping a more tightly wound, intentionally built community - you may still participate in communities on any of the instances Beehaw still federates with, or join other instances to start such communities there.
I have to agree - I was here just on the crest of the first ex-Redditors and it had a really cozy vibe. It's helped a lot by a community and a userbase which is passionate about maintaining a positive culture. I'm glad that you also enjoy it!
Maybe one day we can let those other instances back in on a more limited basis, but it really depends on if/when Lemmy will have better tools for sysadmins.
While Discourse isn't a bad software, it would be hard to migrate to it at this point & the limitations in the way of that have been discussed before. At this point, we are just counting on Lemmy improving and providing better control.
The decision is not an easy one - in large part this is due to the massive moderation overhead which federating with those two instances brought and the lack of tools available to address that. It's an extreme maneuver, but it's either that or nothing until Lemmy as a software improves.

Calckey certainly looks cool and feature rich, but every Calckey instance's main page alone slows my computer down a lot and overwhelms my eyeballs lol. Don't know what to do to make that better.
Yeah, I remember when it was first launched and it's come a long way already.
AFAIK, the quad column layout in Mastodon is based on Tweetdeck. I don't like it either, but some ex-Twitter users do, so that's neither here nor there.
Though this community is not extra-dextra-large, there's still a lot of posts and comments about Reddit - so much so that before we started doing the megathreads, it was clogging up the local feed and preventing people from seeing other posts. Even in general, because !technology is such a big community on Beehaw, subscribing to it drowns out a lot of the other content we have.

Another graphic that is similar to this one is the Cognitive Bias Codex by Visual Capitalist, since logical fallacies have their roots in cognitive bias. I like to pair these graphics together whenever I share them with people.
I sometimes catch myself trying to click an app on the phone for example, out of sheer habit, and going cold turkey on Reddit this happened a couple of times in recent few days. I switched from Firefox to LibreWolf around the same time as I joined Lemmy, so I made Beehaw one of my homepage tabs to help reinforce my habit of coming here. Of course, it didn't need that much help reinforcing since I already feel way more engaged on this site than I did with Reddit. But hey, beehaw 🐝🤠
I run a few groups, like @fediversenews, mostly on Friendica. It's okay, but Friendica resembles Facebook Groups more than Reddit. I also like the moderation options that Lemmy has....
Yeah, as of right now, the only thing users can do is individually block users or specific communities.
I'm glad that you're enjoying your experience on Beehaw though! Even on the admin end there's still not a lot of granular control, but hopefully, the explosion of users will help bring more attention to Lemmy's development.
Hi, tried to post this on /r/startrek but for some reason it was never made visible. Let me know what you guys think! All suggestions/criticisms are welcome....
Being contrarian simply for the sake of it wins, and the person behind the account receives responses (even the rightfully angered ones about their harmful post) and becomes the main character of the day, with little care about being represented negatively.
This is one of the things I hated the most about Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and other giants, and one of the reasons I was so eager to quit them. The social media platforms themselves reinforce it and actually encourage people to attack POC, queer people, women, disabled people, and other marginalized people with total impunity.
But another big thing for me was that, on Big Social, I had a dearth of friends who would celebrate, affirm, or commiserate with me. It always made me feel really alone to be open and vulnerable on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram about my successes or struggles, but draw no response from friends because what I was posting just didn't provide some form of entertainment and/or didn't get shown to them because of timeline algorithms. It made dealing with jerks much harder.
Yes, some developers use Discord to provide technical/product support - this is where the "Yes please search our chat archive for answers to your question. it will certainly remain up forever and not get deleted when the shareholders realize it’s not profitable" comes from. It's honestly really annoying, since I don't really want to add yet another Discord server to my existing clutter just to get an answer that may not even be there.
I really only like using Discord as a parallel community, like the Discord guild for Beehaw or the ones I used to be on which were associated with other forums/subreddits/etc. Making it a privileged channel for getting important announcements, support, or other information feels like stretching it beyond what it's good for, on top of the fact that it's still corporate and stuff could (and does) happen to it without user input.
