@frankdelporte Hi Frank. I'm thinking about switching to a new Mastodon server. I know foojay runs one. Do you recommend I try to switch to it?

kenkousen,

@glaforge @devoxx Fascinating. Looking forward to watching the recording. I'd love to see how you embedded the Groovy documentation in a way that created a chatbot for it

So much hate for the new Java String Templates (which looks to be final in #Java #JDK 22!).

Ignore the hate, get on with upgrading to the latest JDK. 😁

kenkousen,

@jitterted But they are so, so ugly, though I must admit I'm starting to get used to them

kenkousen,

@wakingrufus @jitterted they have an explanation on the JEP itself, which you can find on https://openjdk.org/jeps/430

I haven't been through it in detail yet, because I'm still kind of annoyed about the whole thing. If you see something that makes it all worth it, please let me know :-)

Season two finale of was rather fantastic. Overall, the whole season was very good, really enjoyed it.

kenkousen,

@sinky I liked it as well. Much better than the first season. Best of you've never read the books and never heard of Isaac Asimov

kaskelotti, to random

@kenkousen Hey there, I've been following your explorations into AI. I'm particularly interested in transcribing Finnish-language audio from a video. Have you come across any services that perform well in your tests? Recommendations would be highly appreciated!

kenkousen,

@kaskelotti So far the only translation tools I've dealt with were HeyGen Labs, which is expensive but limited to only a handful of languages, and OpenAI's Whisper tool, which only translates from other languages into English.

I just checked the docs, and one of Whisper's supported languages is Finnish. If you want to send me a sample text, I'll run it through the endpoint and let you know what it returns

kenkousen,

@kaskelotti I think I misinterpreted what you want. If you just want to see how good Whisper's Finnish transcription is, feel free to send me a link to an audio file and I'll run it through the tool

kenkousen,

@kaskelotti that's true, but I suggest that if you're on a Mac, you download MacWhisper. It's a front end on Whisper that lets you give it an audio or video file and then it does the rest. I've been using it for all my videos for months and it's not only great, it remembers where I make corrections and does better over time.

There's also a version of that tool in the Apple Store, but there it's called Whisper Transcription tool and costs money

kenkousen,

@kaskelotti excellent. I paid for it, partly because I wanted to get access to the bigger models and partly just to reward the developer.

I usually use the medium model. I'm guessing you probably need the large one, and might need to help it along at first, but you'll know best.

Btw, I also liked that on the paid version I was able to load a directory full of files and it transcribed all of them.

Good luck!

Java 20 came out on March 21, which is bad enough, but anyone can make an off-by-one error. Java 21 is scheduled to be released on Sept 19, however:

https://dev.java/community/java-21-launch/

That's not off-by-one, that's off-by-TWO, and that cannot stand.

After considering a series of increasingly silly and ineffective protests, the one I've settled on is: I refuse to download or install Java 21 until at least Sept 21.

(The fact that that's also is just a bonus.)

kenkousen,

@StrangeNoises Yup, I get that. Plus I need both Spring and Gradle to work with it, which normally takes about a week or so. But that's not the same as a formal protest. Otherwise how are they going to learn anything?

kenkousen,

@StrangeNoises I always wondered about that too. The release has been frozen for about a month now, though I guess they're waiting for last minute bug fixes and security patches. But, still, what you said

1/ There’s a huge schism growing on the left I’ve struggled to understand.

And, I think I’ve figured out how to put words to it, please tell me if this rings true to you.

There are Policy Leftists and Infinite Leftists.

I am a Policy Leftist. There are specific policies I want with a beginning and end. I can argue them from a rational basis without calling you names if you disagree. Single payer healthcare. Lowering housing costs. Civil rights for LGBT people.
