Sysadmin of this fun fediverse instance. Linux user since mid 1990s. I recently changed careers from IT (networking, primarily, since mid 1990's) to owning a recumbent tricycle shop.

Dad, privacy advocate, climate/earth advocate, sysadmin, recumbent trike cyclist.

I have a silly (maybe eventually not so silly?) Peertube account: https://video.mycrowd.ca/accounts/kinetix/video-channels

Our campsite in the middle of Rhodes...
When we found this place in 'Rodini Park', there was not a single person visiting this deep green park. So we thought we could go to bed early and spend a quiet night. However, we did not expect a group of teenagers who had come to play 'hide and seek'. As soon as they spotted us, they started throwing stones in our direction. So we got out of the tent to show them who we are and to talk to them. Finally, they understood that we are travelers who just want to spend a peaceful night here. After exchanging some famous football players and some curse words in different languages, they finally ran away.

Some days, I think that maybe I should just stop writing, burn my site down, and disappear.

I love doing what I do, and I know there are areas in which I need to improve. But, the last few big articles have been rough for me. People have gotten really angry with me for a variety of reasons, some of which I fundamentally disagree with. But, it forces me to look inwards.

Maybe it's my fragile white male ego, my mediocrity, my deep cynicism, or my stupidity. Maybe I'm just a worthless piece of shit.

I think what terrifies me is that I want to make a living doing this down the road, but I'm thin-skinned and fragile. I live for the acceptance of other people, because my self-image is distorted beyond recognition.

kinetix,
@kinetix@mycrowd.ca avatar

@deadsuperhero I'm sorry I haven't written sooner, as I've been meaning to send you a note of support.

I don't think I see a lot in the fediverse, but I have seen the bullying that you have faced recently. It's not cool, and your difficult articles have been great at bringing light to some of the issues that keep the fediverse from being as welcoming a place as it sometimes claims to be.

Some of the comments here in this thread already are excellent, I don't think I can add all that much. But, I want you to know that what you are doing absolutely has value, I'm very glad that people like yourself are taking an interest and doing the work that nobody else is doing presently. I hope you continue to have the interest and strength in continuing to do so and have enough ways to filter out the toxicity. I mean, you can tell you enjoy doing most of this stuff, and it'll be a shame on all of us if you lose all enjoyment of it and we lose this voice.

@hypolite

Very much this.

Over recent times, in trying to figure out some of the fedi drama that we've seen play out, this notion keeps coming up from some groups that suggest that there's an implicit level of privacy or secrecy on Masto posts... Isn't it a kind of dangerous presumption to post completely publicly on the internet but have this notion that what you're posting publicly has some kind of privacy control on it that a) has no technical merit, and b) nearly nobody else anywhere has agreed to this and newcomers certainly aren't going to be aware of this suggested nuance that "public" has been redefined somewhere?

I wouldn't take my personal information, post it on a billboard, and then expect that information to not be out there for anyone to use any which way they like. Polite society may contact me to ask about re-using that information, but nobody's forcing anyone to keep that information under wraps when, again, it's been published in public.

I've seen discussion where it's recognized that "bad actors" will ignore whatever conventions are put in place in the fediverse, but it's still a worthy goal to try and get all the good actors to agree to some conventions in fedi.

That's an interesting notion, but I don't know that it's feasible aside from small cliques. It's trying add some redefinition of 'public' in public social media spaces, which is just going to cause headache and conflict. The technical means are available, but people don't seem to want to have to lock down their federation and limit their posting scope, they'd prefer to setup rules that don't federate. I don't think that's a very safe path.

My partner is spending a few days in Toronto, Canada for a work conference where she flew yesterday, and I was curious about the alternatives to flying between the largest American metropolis and the capital city of Ontario for a direct distance of 350 miles (560 km):

  • Plane: in 5h door-to-door for $140-$330 + $150-$200 taxi round-trips at both ends.
  • Car: 470 miles (750 km) (+34%) in about 8h40mn for $100-$150 fuel (no tolls included)
  • Bus: in 12h05mn for $40-$140
  • Train: in 12h27mn for $75-$130

There's so much room for high speed rail improvement in this region.

kinetix,
@kinetix@mycrowd.ca avatar

@hypolite
Ok, because I'm that guy, and hopefully you don't mind me pointing it out, but I gotta ask: what's the capital of Canada?🙂

On the transportation end, yes absolutely there's so much room for improvement.

The cost to get from Pearson airport to downtown Toronto is only $12.35 cdn though on the relatively new UP train, and it only takes 25 minutes. I went to Toronto lots prior to that train being in service and the cab/airport limo was always a pain. The train is a humongous improvement there.

kinetix,
@kinetix@mycrowd.ca avatar

@hypolite
Heh, I just edited my post to talk about part of the airport link to Toronto there, but, uh, yeah... The capital of Canada is elsewhere. 😁

At least you didn't South Park it and say she was heading to downtown Canada.

I can't believe that this is still a thing, but if your risk model is noticeably impacted by the adversarial capability of writing an email in the English language then I'm pretty sure your threat model is already broken.

Why can't people be held accountable for being maliciously stupid? People aren't allowed to do many stupid things, but would you blame the janitor for someone flinging poo on a wall after being explicitly told not to?

Thinking InfoSec people are going to catch everything is delusional, and normalizes nonsense like spying on all content in and out of the corporate network. (while ignoring that there's still handfuls of other ways to yank data from the company).

I would be curious to know what kind of job has 'indiscriminate link clicking' as part of it's role, but if I had to have someone in such a position and I couldn't trust them to actually read emails that say "Do not click this link" (and am I setting them up for failure anyway with poor incentivization?), then they're going to be off on an isolated network with access to sweet nothing.

Would you hang on to a millwright who kept cutting off limbs because they just couldn't pay attention to what they're doing? I mean, this discussion revolves around someone clicking a link in an email that specifically says to not click the link.

So far my new #MSI laptop has been delivering in terms of hardware performance, but the software is infuriating. I've talked about my gripes with Windows 11 itself earlier, but now I'm dealing with MSI-specific shenanigans.

When I initially set up the computer, I added one keyboard layout, US International, which allows me to write accentuated letters, common in French, using key combinations with characters available in the US keyboard.

However, whenever I restart my computer for any reason (like OS updates), the basic US keyboard is re-added to the list of available keyboards, which enables the infamous Alt+Shift shortcut to switch between keyboards. This combination is pretty frequently hit inadvertently but normally doesn't do anything on its own, unless you have more than one keyboard layout enabled.

This is irritating on its own, but the steps to remove the unwanted keyboard layout are worse: it only appears enabled in the language widget in the task bar, but not in the language settings, so I have to manually add the US keyboard layout in the settings in order to then remove it, which also affects the language widget and disables the keyboard shortcut. Until the next time I restart the computer.

Same deal but marginally less irritating, the "MSI Center" app keeps re-pinning itself to the taskbar even after I removed it manually. A computer restart and it's back. The MSI helpdesk has the shadiest FAQ page about this very issue which I've been reluctant to follow for fear of collateral damage but I may just end up go with it.
