@why@kirby Any attempt at making a new pocket friendly console will end up chafing against "The Smartphone Problem". Which is to say, why would I carry an extra device in my pockets to play games that's weaker than the one I'm already carrying?
There's a lot of devices that I enjoy using more than a smartphone. Recently I got out of storage an old Palm Pilot and put in some effort to get it to sync with modern computers and services. It's enjoyable to use, it's well designed. I would even call it delightful. I also feel fucking stupid when I pull it out instead of my smartphone. It doesn't have online capability, it only syncs at my computer. The screen is dim. As pleasant and tactile the writing system on it is, it's still slower than my phone's touch keyboard.
I wish I could carry a PDA, a DS/Gameboy, a Minidisc player/recorder. They spark joy. But I feel like a dumb poser hipster when I do. Sure, controls do matter for games, but do they matter 300$ + another big bulging device in my pockets? If they mattered that much I could just carry a small bluetooth controller.
@alex Hi Mr. Gleason. I was wondering if Pleroma FE is able to be used with Ditto yet. All the other nostr interfaces look really bad except for soapbox and I want to keep using Pleroma fe with social media stuffs. :think_happy:
@kirby It's been months since I checked, but in theory you should be able to do this:
Nginx proxy Pleroma FE against a Ditto server
Enter your npub as the username and password to log in.
You are now logged in, in read-only mode.
If you enter your nsec as the password, you can post too. But it's insecure.
The problem with Pleroma FE is that it doesn't support OAuth login.
I'm currently working on making other Mastodon/Pleroma apps work with remote signers, so you can log into any of them securely. But they need to support OAuth login, like fe.soapbox.pub or Pinafore.
To make Pleroma FE work natively will require some hacks or workarounds. But it is possible.
I understand the sentiment behind the entire donate to poast meme thing but it feels more like peer pressure than anything to donate to your instance admin now I don't like that
This server is not very expensive to run it's only like 10 bucks a month, so we don't really need donations or anything. So instead if you have 5 bucks a month to dedicate to fedi, why not start your own instance? It's a liberating and fun experience to do so. If you don't like the Pleroma DB rot problems, there are always other smaller and more portable options such as snac2 [ https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2 ] they will likely last longer [in terms of instance lifespan at least] than most other softwares out there and they also have cool devs behind them.
If you're concerned about where to find a vps to start an instance, there are a few providers out there which offer kvm slices for dirt cheap, I used to use a $5 vultr vps to run my first single user instance. It was pretty fun. Though I've heard vultr has shit the bed nowadays. So it's really your call. I've heard crunchbits is pretty good nowadays.
I guess the only thing really stopping people from doing this is the amount of tech savvyness you need for something like that, but graf himself has funded projects like fediverse express, which handles the techy part for you apparently. Though software options are obviously limited with it.
