Would You Try New Pastimes If Star Trek Level Medical Care Was Available?

Star Trek’s level of medical care is far more advanced than today’s. As Beckett says in LD, “Doc will wave a light over it.” Yet, in Star Trek people aren’t shown doing hobbies and pastimes that are much different from what’s done now. Still, I wonder about differences in a society where people know they won’t be...

klinkertinlegs,

Well, considering there are still people in wheelchairs in Star Trek, guess I’d still be in one.

I like the inclusion (in the show), but I would hope that paralysis was cured that far in the future.

klinkertinlegs,

Been running it on my iPad since dev beta 1. No problems. Not putting it on my only iPhone or my watch though.

klinkertinlegs,

Idk about the writers, but the accountants did if you remember Wil Wheaton’s ‘raise’ lol.

klinkertinlegs,

I’d welcome this. My ancient moto phone had a 5000 mah battery in it and is thinner than my iPhone 13. Idk why they haven’t crammed more in before now.

klinkertinlegs,

I got diagnosed at 36. Not super responsive to the meds, but I also can’t take a high dose. It did help my anxiety a lot though, both the meds and also knowing that I’m not just lazy.

klinkertinlegs,

If your self-served stuff is just for you or family, I use tailscale for that. Nothing publicly enabled, have to be in the tailscale net to access.

klinkertinlegs,

If our consciousness is just a series of electrical impulses, as long as the transporter keot those impulses intact, makes sense that we would still be us at the other end. But I’d think nearly any transporter accident would kill the person being transported since it would mess that up.

klinkertinlegs,

Ditto. I was looking for a reason to bail from Reddit, then they gave me a really great one. I wanted out of my main account because it was my 1st+2nd initial and last name, and there was no way to change it. I didn't like that info being front and center. So I was looking for an out anyway

Did this site live and die in 4 days?

This place has roughly 3,000 people and was intended to be an entire replacement for DaystromInstitute and StarTrek as they were going dark indefinitely. Well, within 4 days the moderators have walked back those statements and opened both subreddits up. I see no incentive for people to come to this website now and while a few...

klinkertinlegs,

I mean, Lemmy if FEDERATED. If that's not Star Trek, idk what is.

klinkertinlegs,

Basically exactly what I was going to say. Like what is the harm in contaminating them when the alternative is non-existence?

klinkertinlegs,

That's their choice.

klinkertinlegs,

Beg to differ there. Reddit has shown it's hand. They want to profit off free content while giving nothing back to the people who create that content. Back them at your peril.

klinkertinlegs,

I didn’t conflate them. I never said the users were trying to profit. Reddit is trying to profit off user generated content that is free given and moderated while whining that others are using the api they gave away for free to do the same thing, except those developers actually provide better user experiences and accessibility than Reddit does. Reddit has shown that the only thing that matters is the money they can extract from the free labor of others, so staying on that platform is acceptance of those consequences.

What would Star Trek shows look like if the senior staff didn't go on all the away missions?

It's a classic, if somewhat exaggerated trope in Star Trek: The ships first officer, second officer, tactical officer, chief engineer, chief medical officer, and a random ensign beam down to an unsecured planet while some dangerous problem is either ongoing or likely to occur. The Doylist reasons for this are as obvious as the...

klinkertinlegs,

I think it would be cool if the away team was different, or nearly different, each episode. You'd have temporary characters to empathize with (much like the alien species usually have), but then cut back to the senior crew dealing with problems on the ship and/or the moral ramifications of what the away team is dealing with. I think it would have to be a show with longer episodes, but we mostly have that now with steaming.

klinkertinlegs,

I must have really zoned out toward the end of Discovery because I thought it was over long ago.

klinkertinlegs,

Always need more Pike!

klinkertinlegs,

They need to install a lo-jack
