what messaging app do you use?

So here’s the thing, every time I try to move away from Facebook messenger I run into the same problem, nobody else in my friends or family actually want to use a secure, private messenger app like signal or telegram, my wife, my parents, my in-laws, my friends they’re ALL on Facebook and they will never take signal...

krash,

I agree with every point. The last paragraph doesn’t have to be a problem though: telegram has very open and really nice APIs and enjoys a lot of FOSS 3rd party apps (only matched by matrix). Of course, we can only enjoy that as long the API usage is still free to use…

krash,

If you like berty, check out briar. Same ideas, however briar is more mature (and uglier).

krash,

I use telegram and signal for different purposes and people.

I’m surprised no-one mentioned XMPP/Snikket nor matrix. Both platforms are FOSS, selfhostable and thus gives you total control over your means of communication. Check them out if you’re curious (I prefer matrix, but snikket is more lightweight and easier to selfhost).

krash,

I also had this problem where touch scrolling on Firefox selects text instead (on ubuntu). It does however work OOTB for me on fedora, so it’s the main distro on that machine.

krash,

As per the readme:

I had a similar story, except it was RH 5.x. I’ve been a faithful ubuntu user, but am seriously thinking of hopping to fedora considering how snappy it is (yet still delivering a fiction free experience).

Here’s to many more years in Linux 🍻

How do parents stay fit while they have little ones?

I used to be fit, running, cycling, partner acrobatics, etc. But I have done very little cardio, strength, or flexibility training since our wonderful daughter came along. She doesn't sleep well so part of the problem is energy. But the main issue is finding time. My partner and I both work remotely, I have a 08:00-16:30 tech...

krash,

Hello fellow parent. I also don’t have any extended family close and I went from workingout 6 days a week to barely doing two days a week.

I think one question needs to be asked first:

Why do you want to stay fit?

Is it because you want to stay healthy? Stay fit so you can be active with your kid(s)? Get kicks out of excerting yourself physically? Once you have your motivation, you need to answer another question:

What actually makes you take the actual step to make a workout?

Is it working out with others? Time to listen to music / podcasts? Seeing actual progress? A competition once your kid gets a bit older?

These questions are important to unlock the answers within you to start, and persist, in working out. In my case, I work out because I feel good when doing my sport, and I started a workout group because I perform best when working out with others. And since I started this group, I could also dictate the location of the group (hint: its 5 minutes walk from my place, thus saving precious minutes). Since I am responsible for coaching the group, I can’t back out days when I’m not in a mood since people count on me.

You could also make an agreement with your partner to take two mornings every week for working out, and do that on a feasting belly (remember warming up!). Or do a HIIT routine during lunch break, there’s plenty material on youtube for that (search for intense 20 minute HIIT). Or, like others suggested, you could do physical workout from home - Arnold Schwarzenegger make an excellent post on Reddit on a routine suggestion for that.

I hope you’ll find time and inspiration for keeping your physical activity going!

krash,

I find Aljazeera as biased as fox news can be. Aljazeera is a impressive news network, but I would absolutely not recommend them as a news source.

krash,

I deleted all my comments along with my account. I'm not contributing to any platform that is corporate owned walled garden. Lemmy is much more in line with my ethos and I'll happily contribute to it.
