@kyle@mister.computer

I am a polite software developer and I am always committed to the bit. I will be your favorite app maker’s favorite app maker.

I am enamored by user-facing software, especially mobile, and especially iOS. Swift is my current weapon of choice but I will use any made-up word to solve any problem. I ship my side projects for free.

I run this single-user Mastodon instance in good faith and I intend to keep it that way.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

SwiftUI -> Swift Concurrency -> SwiftData kind of buried my perennial WWDC enthusiasm under an avalanche of reality. After the last four years, my hands are full of technologies that I eagerly anticipated but are tiring or impossible to hold right. This is the first year I don’t feel guilty for not being excited and that’s progress for me.

kyle,

@kyleve right, when we factor in that many of us are newly targeting iOS 15, looking at this expanding horizon starts to make you think about your mortality

How do you stay productive every day?

It’s wild that I can be super productive one day, and absolutely not the next

What do you do to be more consistent? (This isn’t clickbait, I’m actually wondering how ya do it)

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mikaelacaron The trick is that day is not a meaningful unit of productivity so it doesn’t matter and the work is just getting yourself to believe it doesn’t matter 😄

It’s obvious that being productive year-over-year is important, and that being productive minute-over-minute is not. Month, important but less so, hour, not important. Week, important but less so, day… no reason day gets to be special and be judged by maximal productivity. The rotation of the earth doesn’t dictate this bug fix.

I started the day building a noir theme for users who have accessibility needs or would prefer a less colorful app and ended up building a whole theming engine by accident. So I guess that's a way to say Plinky will have more themes in the future, oops.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mergesort no way! my buddy Joe was just saying the same thing, you two should link up

The main thing I get from just being a curious observer of film productions happening around Vancouver is that every single Special Effects company is run by people who are having the time of their lives. I mean, just look at the company name and logo. 💯

kyle,

@brunoph d’oh I should have publicly mentioned I’m in Vancouver 🥲 but I leave tomorrow (this) morning

WWDC2024 prediction: Apple will tell us they’ve invented a bunch of AI gestures to wicked applause, then after the event we find out that there are lots of limitations. My guess is that what runs on device is a GPT-3.5 class model and does enable some great new experiences, you can get a GPT-4 subscription with Apple an even more expensive Apple One subscription, and it is behind whatever OpenAI launches in their GPT-5 model.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mergesort @mergesort wow my buddy Joe said the same thing

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mergesort I’m betting on GPT-3-level on-device capability exposed via SDK and new subscription Siri backed by Gemini. Two separate domains.

A debugging tip that’s as useful on day 1 as it is in year 10 is to break down expressions into variables. I can’t tell you how often I look at a line of code doing multiple things and think I know what it’s doing only to break it apart and realize I had made some assumption.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

@mergesort @mergesort thank you both

kyle,

@mergesort what is a tip that is not useful on day one but is useful in year 10?

Lifting progressions can feel so strange sometimes. Deadlifting 40kg has become utterly routine for me, but 50kg feels only slightly easier than it did the first time

The Dell U4025QW is now available 👀

  • 40”
  • 5120x2160 (5K2K)
  • 120 Hz
  • Thunderbolt 4 hub
  • 1000R curve

I have loved my 34” LG 5K2K for the last 4 years but really want something physically bigger at 120 Hz. This has to be it.

“We have always wanted to automate software development and have never achieved it so it will never be achieved,” is a logical fallacy, I think. We looked at the moon for millennia and one day we got there.
