lengsel,

Can anyone name a federated service that has built-in encrypted messaging enabled for privacy?

lengsel,

XMPP is decentralized but XMPP has never been federated. I'm a fan of OMEMO but it's decentralized.

Anybody looking for privacy from a federated service will never find it. It seems SimpleX is implementing more decentralized capabilties and it has superior privacy over anything else.

While Signal is the gold standard, it is not at all the best app or service for privacy.

lengsel,

XMPP is decentralized but it is not federated.

lengsel,

Thank you for the correction. For Matrix encrypted messaging, does it depend on app/'program, or is it dependant on the instance?

Why does Nvidia hate linux? (lemmy.ml)

So I’ve been trying to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers on my homelab so I can get my fine ass art generated using Automatic1111 & Stable diffusion. I installed the Nvidia 510 server drivers, everything seems fine, then when I reboot, nothing. WTF Nvidia, why you gotta break X? Why is x even needed on a server driver....

lengsel,

Why does the nVidia work well on FreeBSD but not Linux? Are you fully confident that the problem is only nVidia if the driver works fine on FreeBSD?

lengsel,

Yes, I remember time when people could have a nice conversation online and end up exchanging phones, nailing pictues to each other through regular mail, and it was not normal to abuse people's contact info or address.

But now North American society is twisted, perverted, and internet has been taken over by rejects and losers, read through any comment section and it's all social dysfunction.

Society itself has turned stupid and people don't know how to engage face to face and end up starting a friendship with someone while out somewhere one day and started hanging out together after that.

Look at how many hours people soend alone on computer watching livestreams and in chat compred to spending time outside and talking with whichever people happen to be around them. They can spend 4 hours in a live chat but can't talk to one single person at a store.

When in public, look at how many people can't tolerate standing in line for something for 3 minutes and wait, so they'll check Instagram messages because it's too unbearable to wait and too terrify to say hello to person behind them and ask "What you got going on for today?".

The reason why the internet has no soul, at least in North America, is because the people have lost the capability to socialize with strangers, and understanding person is different and fully respecting differences. People seem to think a disagreement equals a personal attack on them.

Now people will go online and mock people, insult people and pile on the ridicule, but how many do you see outside on the street making fun of people? That's how you know they are all rejects and losers, because they are terrified to act that way in person so they act out their dysfunction online, but time still gets the better them. Nobody can ever run away from time.

The mass majority of people online, not every single person, but a majority of people online are very lonely, but don't seem willing to start talking to people to find real world people to hang out together, or keep the conversation to superficial topics that are irrelevent. It's more comfortable to use home computer for 10 hours and be lonely, but that misery will catch up to them.

For these reasons, all the dysfunction in society, I prefer to meet people who are actively religious, whatever faith it may be, than people who don't acknowledge a superior authority over their life.

Cromite and Vanadium

I am a newcomer to the space and want to know some stuff about the mentioned mobile browsers. Information on them seems a little sparse to me. I am aware of Brave, however on my current device it is very buggy and I do not like the company’s reputation. I am aware of Firefox and it’s derivatives and the benefit they bring...

lengsel,

I am using Graphene abd I disabled Vanadium due to it being Chromium essentially. I use Navi or Download Navi from F-Droid. It does not have as much web functionality as Vanadium, but I don't use phone for websites, I read websites on computer or laptop, but occassionally something might need a browser momentarily so that's what Navi for.

If you want a web browser for privacy, I would suggest use F-Droid and in Settings under Anti-features, turn off every option in there, do a search for browser and see what you think of the options. It's either cheap development or old. A mobile web browser that protects privacy doesn't seem to exist with the capabilitied of a Firefox.

I'm a strong believer that there is no such thing as a privacy respecting browser that is closed source. For that reason, I use IceCat on computer.

lengsel,

Navi has a built-in download manager, it is not a standalone download manager. I use Navi as a light web browser for websites in case I never a browser on phone.

I do not compile IceCat, it's available in different repositories.

lengsel,

Do you have a comparison of temperatures from before and after?

lengsel,

A definite much needed improveme because I know the memory on 3090 has some issues with temperatures that was improved on for the 3090 Ti.

I would guess that the 5090 is going run cool given how small it will be, but with GDDR7, I'm not sure if it will bring temperatures back up.

Molly v.s. Signal

I am not comfortable that signal depends proprietary google library. However, I find that Molly lags significantly behind signal (around 1 to 2 weeks, so maybe not as significant as I thought), but I am just concerned that if there is a security fix in signal, molly will not be able to react as fast....

lengsel,

Do you know about SimpleX?

@Nimbus @SteleTrovilo

lengsel,

I gave up Briar for SimpleX, as really good as Briar is, because of only having one ID. On SimpleX, if you enable incognito, it will create a new random ID for each new contact that you message, so no 2 persons will see the same ID for you, they each see you as a different name.

Also SimpleX is on iOS and Android, Briar is only for Android, and SimpleX does calling with contacts.

lengsel,

In SimpleX app settings, if you have already set a database passphrase, you can do a data backup or export to a file, when SimpleX is installed again, you import database.

lengsel,

Let them stick with Molly/Signal, that will give them a lot of privacy, and nothing for them to figure out how to use.

Leave SimpleX for people more skilled to handle how to do configurations. SimpleX does have superior privacy over Signal, but mabe they can't do SimpleX. Take it in stages with what they can handle, don't jump to the end.

I'm not willing to Matrix and I don't recommend anyone use it if they wat privacy and anonymity. I'm content only using Molly and SimpleX with everybody I know and no other apps or messaging services.

lengsel,

I wish Mastodon had encrypted DM's. I've been focusing on using Mostodon as my main place for media.

I can't find a Matrix client in F-Droid to use because when I turn off all of the anti-features, it seems Matrix is not an option to install something.

Have you not tried SimpleX yet? If not, I would suggest when the new release for 5.2 is in F-Droid you should install it. I could give you an invite link to message there but I don't want others on here using the link.

lengsel,

I'm registered with FluffyChat, it seems fine.

lengsel,

I think my dislike comes from the hype about Matrix being federated so people think it's safe, the fact that a company owns the matrix protocol, seeing the various apos that have non-free dependencies, when I looked before it seemed alk personal Matrix history is permanent, it seemed to be a combination of not the freedom people think it is and no clear sense of what the purpose of matrix is for, but don't now that I had an account previously to validate all of that.

If you want, we could talk on matrix but we both post our ID's here publicly to make sure it matches who we message on there?

lengsel,

This might be of interest to you https://mastodon.social/@simplex/110776953058906725

lengsel,

I'm planning to watch it and ask a question.

lengsel,

Nothing can touch Photoshop. They pay developers good salaries to implemend new features. For people who do media prouction and photography for $150,000, they only care about time, nothing else. I will always tell them to use Mac or Windows and Photoshop to get work done in a hurry and get paid.

GIMP does not exist or is s laughing joke for people who work full time in graphic design and photo production.

What's your opinion on telegram from a foss and privacy perspective?

I see i can find a foss version on f-droid, and that’s something not a lot of social networks can have, i don’t really like all the crypto bullshit and ads testing they’ve been up to lately, but still looks better to me compared to what Reddit have done lately or what other platforms have done in these years…...

lengsel,

Do a search online of Telegram turning over user to government, they store your contacts and info.

For absolute privacy and security, stick with SimpleX for creating a different random ID for each contact you message, no 2 users will see the same ID from you.

As a secondary option, use Molly which is a modified version of Signal to remove proprietary dependancies.

lengsel,

That's a first gen 4 core that has memory latency issues. The board could be too low end on VRM to handle a 5600x upgrade

Can you afford to build a brand new everything PC?

lengsel,

Everything does. The 1060 is ok as long as you do not play any games from the last 3 years.

Given your specs, I assume the power supply is in the 650 to 750 range, that won't handle the new hardware releases.

For you next system, I would suggest paying extra money for an extra nice case and a larger power supply than what you could use. That way with an expensive case and expensive power supply, in 5 years you'll only need to replace motherboard and processor, you will not have to take apart the whole system or build a whole new one. You simply disconnect all cables to.motherboard, unscrew it, take it, put in new board, CPU, RAM, connect all cables to board, you did a new platform upgrade.

I bought a 1000W power supply, I might max out at drawing 600W. It wasn't a waste of money. My system is 100% stable, PS is not working much with that load, it will still work very well when I do a platform upgrade in 3 years or so so no cable management since I will use the same case and power.

lengsel,

The media has succesfully programmed you in correct terminology to speak so they can use you as their talking parrot.
