That would be funny if it wasn’t so horrifying.

Apple Suggest They Will Withdraw iMessage and FaceTime In UK If Law Changes Go Ahead (www.theguardian.com)

Apple has said planned changes to British surveillance laws could affect iPhone users’ privacy by forcing it to withdraw security features, which could ultimately lead to the closure of services such as FaceTime and iMessage in the UK.

I think you underestimate the deep stupidity and tech-ignorance of our politicians, coupled with their burning desire to know everything that we do. This is a set of people who think hidden == illegal.

Signal have already said they will withdraw completely from the UK, as have WhatsApp, Session and a few others.

Knowing this gvmt, they’ll try and prevent access at the ISP level. They’ve already started making noises about tackling ‘the menace of VPN’s’.

Which would be fine except Starmer approves of all the things contained in the various bits of legislation.

I’m pretty sure that’s the end-game, yes. At least as far as communication based tools go, which would include chat apps, VPN’s, cloud storage etc etc. The ruling classes in the UK are very nanny-state and genuinely believe that a persons right to privacy comes a distant second to being able to rule over us and control us more effectively.

The issue for non-UK countries is that when world governments see that its possible to pass these sort of laws, they’ll be keen to do the same. And most people are not tech-savvy, they’ll have no real idea why it’s important or invasive. It’s difficult enough to get people to switch to Signal. Imagine trying to explain why breaking encryption is a bad thing for them.

All the Apple users I know routinely use iMessage and WhatsApp.

ELI5: How does Lemmy know to not show Mastodon posts?

As a new user to all these sites, I’m confused about they interact with each other. For example, on Lemmy, I can view a Mastodon account, but I can’t view that account’s posts. This makes sense, as sorting your home feed by “all” could hypothetically result in your feed getting flooded by popular Mastodon posts....

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmy’s federation code is not as mature as Mastodon’s. Mastodon is probably the most mature codebase in the fediverse. This means that a Mastodon user sees a Lemmy community as just another user, so they can ‘subscribe’ to that community and post to it and join in the comments section of posts they’ve created.

So it’s not so much that Lemmy knows not to show Mastodon content, it’s more that right right now it’s not able to (in a Lemmy-to-Mastodon direction), Lemmy federates very well with other Lemmy instances but not so well with non-Lemmy instances. That will improve as Lemmy gets developed further.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Mastodon and Lemmy present content differently. Mastodon is a microblogging service like Twitter whereas Lemmy is a link aggregator like Reddit. This means that Lemmy content is usually longer and has a title whereas Mastodon content is shorter and has no title. All these things will need to be ironed out as integration deepens.

A Mastodon user can subscribe to a Lemmy Community in the same way they can Follow a Mastodon user e.g.

So they could now post to that Community and see every direct reply to that post and reply to those replies but they can’t currently just stumble across Lemmy Communities in their federated timeline because Lemmy can’t do that yet.

Let’s hope the season is as good as the off-season has been so far!

The quality of players coming in is a big step up in quality and to attract players of this standard means they believe in Emery too. These aren’t big names at the end of their career, they’re young and hungry.

Fediverse equivalent use of TikTok/Instagram/Twitter for short video sharing..need tips on use/platforms/formats

I’ve been loving Lemmy and mastodon and feel they are coming along as good replacements for Reddit and Twitter. Outside the fediverse, I occasionally enjoy posting dumb little video shorts and I put them on TikTok, Facebook and Insta because I have friends, family and followers on each. (TikTok, Gen-Z, my daughter…Facebook,...

Give a Firefish (fka Calckey) instance a go. It’s a bit like Mastodon and a bit like Tumblr and a little bit like TikTok.

You’re interpreting the artwork too literally. I think the creator was just trying to save themselves a bit of drawing time.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a meme. If you’re expecting a dead on accurate reflection of reality, you’re looking at the wrong media format.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, it’s a meme community reacting to a meme where both the inference and message are crystal clear - how many interpretations and how much logic can there actually be?

I have VSCodium installed via flatpak. Works perfectly.

Edit: has open-source extensions too.

Adding a top level link to the main side menu?

What I’d like is to be able to add a link to the main side menu (where the links to ‘timeline’, ‘notifications’, ‘chat’ etc are) that I can link to a page I’ve created for all users of my instance. The reason being, I’d really like the instance rules page to be more accessible and visible....

That sounds really good. It’s exactly the sort of thing that, if we have to have RE, an actual educational class about religion should look like.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.world avatar

It’s what happens when there’s a state-mandated religion. A lot of people don’t realise it’s still law in the UK for state schools to have a certain amount of christian content per day. Obviously a lot of schools ignore that with zero repercussions but it’s indicative of what happens when theist religions have a choke hold on the tools of state, particularly one religion.

Legally enforceable christianity in schools, the rise and rise of single faith schooling, the fact that we’re only one of two countries in the world that have unelected religious leaders actively participating in forming the laws of the land (the other, notably, is Iran). And all in a country that is no longer a majority christian country.

leraje,
@leraje@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think anyone is saying that learning about religion in context is a bad thing. There’s nothing wrong with learning about Papal supremacy prior to the Reformation or people like Wycliffe within the context of how a nation and/or culture evolved. And if that was how students in the UK did learn about religion I think more people would find it educational and interesting but that’s not how it’s taught. In my day it was just more evangelism dressed up as education and from all I’ve read that’s still pretty much the case.

My dad used to do this thing where he would pronounce any word ending in ‘es’ to ‘EZ’ so an innocuous work like ‘plates’ became ‘plat-EZ’. He extended this over time to any word with a plural so ‘roads’ for example became ‘road-EZ’. According to family lore, this started at a terrible Italian restaurant before I was born.

At increasing levels of my age I saw this as:

  • baby - 5: This is clearly normal adult behaviour
  • 5 - 8: My dad is a comedy genius
  • 9 - 12: Alright, stop it now
  • 12+: Genuinely considering patricide.
