luciferofastora,

What’ll they do with them in Gaza? Put them in working camps?

I wish they’d see the bitter irony of it and correct course, but at this stage, wishing for them to choke on it seems like a more feasible option.

luciferofastora,

Government trying to steer a herd of impulsive and selfish citizens into doing what makes sense for the collective (or what they believe makes sense (or what they’re trying to convince us they believe makes sense))

luciferofastora,

To be fair, stuff like the GDPR is probably not in the lobby’s best interests, so they do bring good regulation too

luciferofastora,

When sexist objectification accidentally teaches a point against sexist objectification

luciferofastora,

I never played that myself but I recall watching sections of it and it’s definitely a bit of a gut punch in places. I remember a place where one streamer just had to interrupt to process something, then went back and redid a whole chunk because a past choice really fucked him up.

luciferofastora,

Electric Callboy used to be called Eskimo Callboy until somewhat recently. Eskimo is now considered a slur for the Inuit and Yupit peoples. I’m fairly sure thay EC meant no offense by the term and rather used it out of ignorance (as evidenced by them setting in motion the presumably rather extensive process of changing their entire branding, including pulling old songs and changing all their old album covers), but given their early albums were all about edgy funny provocation, it’s not a great look.

luciferofastora,

TIL

luciferofastora,

I’ve got a joke about DB, but I’m not sure when it’ll reach you

luciferofastora,

Probably break my neck because I’m a bloody reckless driver and unlike my avatar in the game, I’m not invulnerable.

Trackmania

luciferofastora,

A much higher number of justifications for that government to crack down even further. First you demonize the enemy, then you strike against them, and when they inevitably defend themselves, you have a justification to kill the people trying to kill yours. That playbook is millenia old and still works.

luciferofastora,

More specifically, by the heirs of Theo Albrecht, one of the two brothers that founded the two Aldi companies.

luciferofastora,

The name ALDI literally stood for “Albrecht’s Discount”. It was part of their concept from the start. We can bicker about quality, but if you don’t have the luxury of choice, their prices are generally good here in Germany too.

luciferofastora,

Albrecht has owned it for most of its existence. The first TJ was opened '67, Albrecht owned the chain since '79, so out of itd 56 years, 48 have been in possession of himself or his family.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

luciferofastora,

An eternal arms race: Ads vs. Adblockers. Just like malware vs anti-malware protections. System penetration vs. system hardening. It iust entered another stage of technological development, but that doesn’t mean it’s over or that we need to throw the towel.

luciferofastora,

How can my workplace admin block Pornhub even when I’m using private mode? He shouldn’t even be allowed to see what I do privately!

luciferofastora,

Surely they’ll actually comply, not be caught in an audit years down the line and given a friendly “Now now, we talked about this: don’t get caught breaking the law again!” slap on the wrist for failing to delete and instead further monetising that data?

luciferofastora,

Pretty sure Firefox says that too. Users just don’t read. Like, ever. They’ll get an error message saying “Important!” and click whatever button seems most likely to make it go away before calling support and demanding they “fix the computer”.

luciferofastora,

Forgive me for being cynical about the odds of those consequences actually being enacted. Giving the courts a weapon for getting such companies in line is one thing, getting the judges to actually fire it another.

A law is only ever as good as its enforcement.

If I’m wrong, of course, I’ll be glad to learn that. I’ve just run out of optimism halfway through adolescence.

luciferofastora,

Huh. Neat. Thanks for that!

Looking for a good Linux to install on a slow 2019 machine. Relative beginner with Linux.

Hello! My old laptops hard drive packed it in, so I got a new one and now need to flash drive an operating system on it. I think this is my time to give Linux a proper go. I tried it before for my gaming PC but switched for a cracked Windows key because I was young and not bothered to learn....

luciferofastora,

Not me gearing up for a phone call half a dozen times this week only for the phone to be occupied every damn time I call until I just can’t get myself to call anymore

luciferofastora,

Yeah, if you’ll advertise a service like that, it should work already. Otherwise, odds are I (and other people too, probably) will click it two or three times, then give up. If I see future links, I’ll remember that it didn’t work, be biased to not even try anymore, and potentially never notice if it actually did improve and start working.

It’s a common FOSS / Privacy-respecting-service issue, where someone will create something out of ideology, but the result will have poor usability, and unless you’re really really invested into the ideology yourself, you’ll probably stop using it because your free time is too precious to spend on getting frustrated over stuff that works poorly.

I feel the FOSS / Privacy Alternatives community needs to learn the lesson many bic companies have learned already or are learning now, that the quality of the User Experience is important in retaining people. Ideology can get them to try, but functionality and ease of use will keep them from running back to Google et al.
