I pay for premium, personally, but that shit is just scummy.

luciferofastora,

It was my last Windows too. I used it until shortly before the end of Extended Support, stubbornly refusing to upgrade.

I had been running Dualboot with Ubuntu for a while, but something bricked my bootloader (I didn’t bother investigating just what nor trying to fix it) and I decided the time was as good as any to take the leap and go fully Linux.

I’d love to say I never looked back, but every now and then I’m tinkering to get something to run and think of the days when the question “will it work?” was reserved for complex mod setups in Skyrim. The compatibility tools have gotten a lot better and I’ve gotten more experienced and confident with them and the system itself, but there are days where I miss the comfort.

Still, the newer Windows versions never appealed enough to consider going getting, and they’re growing less and less appealing with each new update. I’m using Win10 at work and it has only cemented my conviction to not get it for myself.

luciferofastora,

I mean, it seems like that’s the cultural push-and-pull depicted here: Some people don’t like it and make that known. If their opinion ends up prevailing and papers containing silliness end up being rejected by the major journals of their field, doctoral comittees etc., eventually the silliness may be driven out and gatekept.

We fans of harmless humour would lament as much as the guy in the OP laments now. We would presumably attempt to encourage silliness, as the guy in the OP does now.

Consensus swinging one way naturally doesn’t magically mean we now have to change our opinions to fit the consensus. Right now, language evolves in our favour, and we will attempt to support and leverage that evolution because it suits us.

AM radio law opposed by tech and auto industries is close to passing | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

A controversial bill that would require all new cars to be fitted with AM radios looks set to become a law in the near future. Yesterday, Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass) revealed that the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” now has the support of 60 US Senators, as well as 246 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives, making...

My god, they must’ve really fucked up their shit

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I’m sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I’m sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I’m sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it’s been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one...

luciferofastora,

I’m not a native speaker, but somehow have a bigger vocabulary than my phone. Granted, I read a lot, but you’d expect my dictionary to, well, contain the entire dictionary. Some words, it recognises one form, but not others.

luciferofastora,

A chunk of their target audience aren’t really gamers so much as FIFA players. They don’t buy a lot of games, so they don’t mind splurging on the newest and most up to date installment of their favourite soccer sim once per year.

luciferofastora,

The money’s in the treatment, not in the cure

luciferofastora,

I have a draft that I will absolutely finisj some day about an Astartes chapter that primarily deploys alongside Guard and occasionaly Navy forces, not as separate force that comes in, wrecks shit, refuses to elaborate and leaves, but integrated (and to a degree intermingled) with their personell.

They’d serve not just as shock troops like the Astartes usually do, but also as defensive resources and morale boosters, zealously embracing the divinity of the God-Emperor and their own nature as His holy warriors. Besides Warfare, they’d be trained in rhetorics, the Ecclesiastical canon, their Librarians focused on divination and biomancy (particularly restorative) powers to further cement their perception as saints.

Their progenitor is unknown and the rumours that they’re sons of Lorgar are entirely unfounded and pure blasphemy.

luciferofastora,

Would that make him the grandfather of smartphones?

luciferofastora,

I think the issue is that it’s not also millenial-universal. If only some millenials know it, the rest of us is left out.

I can still operate the iPod though, so I don’t need to know who it is to look for and select.

luciferofastora,

A boomerang is a clip that plays and rewinds in a loop, like it’s flying to the end of the clip and returning like a boomerang.

I don’t even use Instagram myself, why do I know this

luciferofastora,

My hope is that community-developed Proton forks reach a point where they can stand on their own without Steam and Valve, perhaps as a component of or a sibling to Lutris, to conveniently run games from other platforms too.

I’ll admit that I don’t have a clear idea of how that would look or come about. It’s hard to beat the convenience of having the compatibility tool built directly into the launcher like in Steam, with individual prefixes and settings for different games if they have different requirements.

luciferofastora,

Slipping in mud and landing face-first in animal droppings is perfectly natural too

luciferofastora,

Das ist der ekligste Brenn den ich über einen Dialekt gelesen habe.

Hast du auch einen zu Schwäbisch?

luciferofastora,

Free market for jobs, how does that feel? Bet they’re ecstatic to try the principles of fair competition for themselves.

luciferofastora,

Nah, burning would release even more toxins. We need to find an environmentally friendly (or at least minimally harmful) way to dispose of them.

RFK Jr. Swears He Wasn’t Thirsty for Fitness Influencer on TikTok (gizmodo.com)

The reply happened in Sept. 2022 on Tyler Idol’s account, which she now has pinned to her page, and was unearthed by some right-wing dork on X Wednesday. The reply is now deleted, but according to saved recordings, it simply stated “Wow” and was accompanied by two smiling faces with hearts emoji. As for how you can tell it...

luciferofastora,

…I somehow didn’t process that. My brain kinda skipped ahead to the punctuation debate and then wanted to get back on topic.

I shall go find a hole to crawl into.

What're some of the dumbest things you've done to yourself in Linux?

I’m working on a some materials for a class wherein I’ll be teaching some young, wide-eyed Windows nerds about Linux and we’re including a section we’re calling “foot guns”. Basically it’s ways you might shoot yourself in the foot while meddling with your newfound Linux powers....

luciferofastora,

I footgunned myself with iptables once and couldn’t even google how to fix it. (Well, I could with my phone, just not the convenient google - copy - paste - run workflow)

I don’t remember the details, but I was trying to control internet access of a VM guest and ended up controlling my own too.

luciferofastora,

I regularly find myself trying to tweak some system config and opening the file read-only because I forgot to sudo vim it.

Doesn’t help that my everyday user account doesn’t have sudo privileges, so I need to su to my admin account first.

If you’re looking for good code, you missed the point of my comment 😄

If I was looking for an enumeration of valid inputs, I’d make it a selection box rather than a text field that’s supposed to contain a number and give the selections reasonable names. If I want an integral quantity, I’d use a number input field.

If I have no control over the frontend, that means I’m writing a backend in JS for a bullshit frontend, and no amount of good coding practice is going to salvage this mess.

I’m also blessedly far away from WebDev now. I work in Data Analytics and if I ever have to do any of this for a living, something has gone very wrong.

Converting texts into numbers or dates still haunts me though - fuck text inputs for numbers and dates.

luciferofastora,

To me, being on the meds makes me feel… weird? Slightly hollowed out? I can’t find the best words for it, but the whole chorus of sensory input and thoughts and impulses that I’m used to off-meds somewhat quiets down and my head feels a lot emptier.

On the other hand, it has the significant advantage that there is more space for the things I do want to focus on, and I’ve figured out I can sort of fill the void with music. It creates a padding, further suppresses distractions, and I can filter it out quite well if I need to focus more intensely. It slightly depends on how well I know the music, but that’s not a hard-and-fast rule either.

So I admit it’s useful for being productive during the day and by extension good for my self-esteem and mental health if I know I can get stuff done, but I also enjoy when it wears off in the evenings and I sink back into the familiar bustle.

The side effects like heart rate, blood pressure, occasional feeling of anxiety and nervosity out of nowhere and increased sweating suck though. I could really do without them.

luciferofastora,

As an apostate with Bipolar II, my antidepressants helped me more than the Holy Spirit ever did.

Years of praying and devotion vs one chemical stabiliser, who would win?
