Started in #radio nearly 30 years ago, which transitioned to #podcast nearly 20 years ago. “Mac OS Ken” focuses on Apple news. “The Checklist by #SecureMac” focuses on security. Used to do a show about #StarTrek. These days, all I REALLY want to talk about are #bookbinding, #fountainpens, #postcards, and #stationery. Well… and #VR. And #AR. And #Apple and #podcasting and radio.

A headline from The Next Web says, “Humanity faces two existential crises - the climate crisis and AI.” It then asks, “Can one help solve the other.”

The answer is obviously “yes.” But I’m not certain you’ll like climate’s solution.

Siri is the absolute most useless function on the Apple TV...Examples:

“How long is the movie volcano”
“Naming that tune"

'How long is the movie Arrival”
Shows the proper movie

“How long is the movie volcano”
Response “Naming that tune"

“How long is the movie volcano with Tommy Lee Jones”
"Which one, here are movies with Tommy Lee Jones”

Completely fucking useless. I would understand if it showed all movies called "Volcano”, but nope. Totally useless.

@waynedixon have you considered the possibility that it’s trying to save you from watching “Volcano”?

New (to me) idea: a top level domain for corporate f$&k ups. Lost your data? Left a back door in the hardware we sold you? Gave you syphilis in those organic prunes? Go to company name-dot-wfu (we f$&ked up) or dot-wfy (we f$&ked you) for your obligatory free credit monitoring and words of contrition.

Just had the idea. I’ll work on it and get back to you.

Hey people: I started using a shimmer recently- Gluon from Colorverse. Love the look, but not surprisingly it has gummed up my italic nib Pilot Metropolitan. Are shimmers best for dip pens in your opinion? Or do I just resolve myself to a decent once-a-week cleaning?

And please - no lectures about NOT using shimmers. Much appreciated.

Serious question: Is there an active market for super apps on Android in the US market? I don’t know of any, but being a dyed in the wool iPhone user, I wouldn’t. The DoJ suit indicates that Apple has killed super app development on iPhone. But - if some super app was truly super and started heating up the Android market, some people might switch, which would prompt change from Apple. Anyway - my legit question stands: Is there an active market for super apps on Android in the US market?

@LoneLocust what’s funny is - no I haven’t. But I’m pretty sure just knowing it’s out there started today’s mini musical marathon.

@LoneLocust I actually go back to Adam and the Ants pretty frequently. But synergistic marketing would not surprise me.

Spent last week making a book from the cake box from last year’s birthday. I saved it saying, "I’m going to make a journal out of this," then didn’t.

At the , there was a couple selling books they’d made. He was just SO ENCOURAGING about doing it. He suggested classes in San Francisco. He also suggested YouTube, which is where I ended up.

Book two is already designed. I’ll likely give it a week, then dive in.

The back of a hand made book, the cover of which is fashioned from a Duncan Hines Dolly Parton’s Southern Style Coconut cake box. The book is held in my hand to hide an unfortunate incident with the back binding.

@seanbala I am not even certain how to answer your question. The cloth on the spine was just fabric my special lady friend used to make a dress. Chipboard under the cover. Mod Podge where needed. I am seriously at square one.

It finally dawned on me (again) earlier that shows that most people like, I have no interest in. Like no interest what so ever.

Some examples include: The Office, Ted Lasso, and Big Bang Theory, just to name some off the top of my head. And don’t get me started on “reality” shows.

Conversely, those that tend to be “meh”, are the ones I like. Extrapolations and Invasion, are two that I can think of.

macosken,
@macosken@mastodon.social avatar

@waynedixon I wanted to love “Extrapolations.” There were a lot of great ideas, but the ends of most episodes seemed sort of weak to me. Just getting into “Invasion” now. Better than I expected. What are your thoughts on “Little America?”

macosken,
@macosken@mastodon.social avatar

@waynedixon yeah. Which is not to take away from the messages and the really neat speculative fiction ideas. Extrapolations of tech on the way. I wonder though whether they were trying to hard to stay on the decidedly hopeful side of a decidedly bleak premise.

Politically, he was not my cup of tea, but when I was a country DJ 1.5 million years ago - Toby Keith songs never failed to do something for me. “Who’s Your Daddy” and “I Love This Bar” are still pleasures. Maybe guilty pleasures, but pleasures. Sorry the music had to end. We probably wouldn’t have been friends, but I appreciate the tunes. RIP.

@macosken you wanted to know if people were going to order an Apple Vision Pro. I think I’m going to sit this one out. As much as I’d like to get one it isn’t in my budget. My apps and books don’t generate enough revenue (nor are popular enough) for me to warrant buying one, even for development.

Beyond this, it’ll likely be closer to $4500, (lenses, AppleCare, and taxes). If it was 1/2 the starting price I’d probably consider it. But for now, it’s just too much.

macosken,
@macosken@mastodon.social avatar

@waynedixon all understandable. I can even BEGIN to think about getting one. So expensive.

macosken,
@macosken@mastodon.social avatar

@waynedixon first I’d have to break the news to them that I’m alive. Then I’d have to explain what a podcast is. Or what they used to be. I could beg in the corner and likely get one more quickly.

macosken,
@macosken@mastodon.social avatar

@waynedixon the last time I got a reaction from Apple on anything was when I was still with Inside Mac in 2005. Tried for several years and eventually took the hint.

Saw “Godzilla Minus One” today. Very in-line with the original 1954 film. Consideration on war, courage/cowardice, expectations of others, and expectations of one’s self. Really glad I saw it on the big screen. Pretty mind blowing movie.
