Americans desperately need everything to have a definite Right Way and Wrong Way, so that we can properly judge people who are Doing Things The Wrong Way as immoral. It’s their imperialist reflex: they always know better than you.
‘Look at the detail in this painting: the upholstery so carefully and sensitively realised; the window strap that is clearly made of leather and not some artificial material; the window fittings and the striped draught strips. The interior of the railway compartment is so beautifully drawn, with such clarity, that it is not...

In France, we like to give lessons in secularism to the whole world. It is not here that a president would take an oath on the Bible! The problem is that this great national narrative is sometimes accompanied by monumental hypocrisy. In reality, there is nothing particularly neutral or exemplary about the system in place in France.
France is not really different from other European countries when it comes to religion. And often “laicité” is used to enforce an “identity” politics based on Christianity. Like, Sarkozy and his bullshit “Loi interdisant la dissimulation du visage dans l’espace public” (law forbidding the veil)? Or the early debate about burkini that is on ALL the medias?
But tell yourself that christianism has long gone extinct in France, sure, lol.
The article also argues for the same point, I believe. However, it posits that the right-wing and populist movements in Europe are employing the language and political tools of Christian Democracy to rationalize their actions. The process of European integration has also contributed to these dynamics. Nonetheless, you are correct; the fundamental reasons lie elsewhere.
In 2019 (or was it 2018?), i joined Mastodon within a now presumably defunct instance. I noted that the community was absolutely toxic and neurotic, in contrast to Twitter. And that says a lot. Cliquish bullshit. I deleted my accounts. Perhaps now it’s better…
Recently i joined lemmy, bcs on reddit saying that you don’t think fomenting a war is a good thing gets you permabanned. Reddit used to be a relatively free and welcoming place, with different opinions and a good degree of tolerance. Now it’s just neo-liberals ghouls and bleeding hearts liberals.
