Can anyone recommend an emergency electrician in?

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@johnefrancis lol. Well, at least we figured out the emergency electrical issue on our own. Helps to toot it out. Then the electrical issue is magically solved. Also helps if you replace the correct fuse.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@johnefrancis Also, if you replace the one that's actually blown, not the one that's working properly. Then maybe you get the power back. Otherwise you panic and think something else is really wrong. And it also helps if you remember which appliance is on what circuit so you don't think you have multiple circuits failures ๐Ÿ˜

There's road construction on nearby streets and none of the construction workers are wearing masks. Ugh. Where's worker safety? The unions? Why would the company not provide respirators and insist on people wearing them?

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@WTL No doubt. They were right at the corner where the school bus stop is. Parents were wearing masks, standing around construction equipment and unmasked workers. Very surreal. Plus maybe everyone making decisions is a smoker and they figure more smoke doesn't really matter at this point?

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@WTL You'd think construction workers would be used to having to wear respirators for various jobs and would just shrug and wear one, but apparently you'd be wrong.

Smokiest streak ever.

It looks even smokier this morning than it did yesterday.

With the AQI pinned at 10+, another way of considering the thickness of smoke is the visibility. Yesterday's range was from 3-10km, but this morning, it's dropped as low as 1.2km.

Somewhere there are data feeds with the measurements of air pollutants, I've seen them measured in the 0-1000 ug of PM2.5 particulates, an AQI of 10 is something like 200. Models show blobs over 500 heading at Ontario.

@johnefrancis I don't know how reliable this site is, but they say Ottawa is at 428 ๐Ÿ˜ฌ https://www.iqair.com/ca/canada/ontario/ottawa

One of my kids' schools apparently might be closed tomorrow due to the smoke as they don't have air conditioning/ventilation. Remember how all the schools were supposed to get that with COVID funding? Welp. I wonder what the school board actually did with those funds. But we'll never know.

My bathroom is tiny (stand in the centre and you can touch all four walls!) but for whatever reason the register/heat vent is the largest in the house. This is actually quite nice in the winter because it gets quite warm in there when you shut the door so it's great when you get out of the shower, especially first thing in the morning when the house is still cold. Unexpectedly this means right now the air in the bathroom is the best as it's pumping out a large amount of cleaner air. Lol.

The new rosebuds on the Campfire rose have opened, giving me an opportunity to show how the rose changes colour from when it opens. Here's the newly opened rose and the one that opened several days ago. They start out mostly yellow and progress to mostly pink.

Here's a Campfire rose on the same bush that opened last week. It's nearly completely bright pink, just a little bit of yellow in the centre

@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

It's very yellow outside. And the smokey smell is in the house even with the windows shut and the HVAC fan on.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

Ugh, it no longer looks like rain in the forecast. Just a 30% chance for the rest of the week. I opened the front just long enough to determine you really need to wear a mask if you go outside at all.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

It's even worse than I thought. I don't remember ever seeing sure quality numbers like this

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@WTL Yeah, I wore one to the school bus stop and it still wasn't great.

@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

The Environment Canada air quality special weather statement is probably the most serious one I've read. Says to keep your HVAC fans running and if you have to spend time outside, wear a respirator (like an N95)

This weekend I tried biking outside for the first time since the collision/surgery! It was ok. My fear was the initial start and things like switching from sitting to standing would hurt but that was all ok. I did have pain related to pedalling but it's more of a stretch pain rather than a bad pain. Indoor cycling is pain free so I think it's just the difference in the knee position. I was using my folding bike and the alignment there isn't great so on Sunday I tried out my step-through Dutch-style bike and that's much better. It also has suspension and is a much more comfortable ride. It's just big and a real pain to carry from the basement to outside, but since I can't carry any bikes up stairs ATM I guess it doesn't matter ๐Ÿ˜

Smoke from the forest fires is making it hazy. Here's the hazy sun this morning.

Smoke in today's weather forecast ๐Ÿ˜ฌ you probably don't want to dry your clothes outside or they'll smell like camping

Ah, we've hit the interesting yearly temperature phenomena of it being 32ยฐC but the water out of the tap is still ice cold

Are people just burning wood or is there a forest fire that I can smell? (Also, stop burning stuff, we're in a climate emergency)

I can't believe this city would consider building an incinerator rather than enforcing recycling bylaws.

Wait. I can totally believe it. It's a good thing we're broke because this won't happen. Hopefully.

mariellequinton,

@human3500 Ottawa is still recycling like it's the 1990s.
