At the beginning of April I found the perfect mother's Day gift for me. It was in Etsy and was made and shipped from Ukraine. They estimated it would take two weeks to get here, but this seemed optimistic to me. I sent the link with the clear instructions that I wanted it for mother's Day and that it was from Ukraine so it would take a bit to get here. It was more than a month before mother's Day so I figured out would be ok. Mother's Day rolls and around and there's no present ๐Ÿ™„ they hadn't even ordered it ๐Ÿคฌ. So they ordered it then. I just got it! I can't believe it only took 1.5 weeks via mail from Ukraine. Mail service is really amazing. Ukrainians are also amazing. Household males less so. Happy Mother's Day to me.

Urg. Fireworks. Gah. People are real jerks.

@johnefrancis They seem to set them off regularly all summer. The police, which are normally parked nearby, don't seem to care. And bylaw certainly doesn't. City councilor just said it got worse during the pandemic because people were bored and thus it's temporary. It's not getting better, however, because no one ever gets in trouble. They are, of course, setting them off in the park, which is always illegal.

But you can set them off on Canada Day and the day before and after Canada Day in Ottawa https://ottawa.ca/en/3-1-1/report-or-request/noise/discharge-fireworks

Hmm... Is that normal? Huge raccoon is broad daylight at our neighbour's ๐Ÿ˜ณ

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@stephanie You do see them out occasionally during the day, often someone is fiddling in their shed or something and disturbs them. Sometimes, especially with babies, they have to move nests or something. When you do see them, you wonder how such chonky animals manage to hide from us so well!

Yoghurt making started this morning.

Our little 8-container yoghurt incubator works well for the Canadian bagged-milk situation. When I have one container left, I heat up a single bag's volume of milk (1.3 L) then let it cool. That volume plus the last container dumped in to inoculate the batch makes exactly 8 full containers again. A continuous loop.

@ottaross I think yogourt is the most Canadian spelling, in that no one else uses it. I default to that.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Yogourt is very Canadian because it's both English and French (while not being used in either England or France ๐Ÿ˜). I think the "h" is generally used in Commonwealth countries, and like the "u", not in the US.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross That's the France French version. I'm sure they absolutely reject the Canadian French version ๐Ÿ˜, as I'm sure French Canadians are fine with both just like English Canadians use multiple spellings ๐Ÿ˜. A Canadian spelling to unite Canadians and confuse the rest of the world ๐Ÿ˜œ

We're killing all the grass in the yard to prepare for all the plants we ordered. The birds are ecstatic about it! They're taking so much dead grass away and eating so much in the dirt!

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@human3500 @stephanie I haven't had grass in years. Many many lawns are just gravel ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ you can't have hardscaping on the city property (hence the issues with tiny libraries). There's height restrictions and apparently your can't have edible plants within a metre of the road (grass is edible so ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ). I most certainly don't have edible plants that people like to snack on while walking by. Nope.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@johnefrancis @human3500 @stephanie Ooo excellent idea. Although it probably gets taller than whatever the height restriction.

Went out before 9 this morning to take the laundry off the line and it smelled like campfire out there. Why are people burning stuff? Have they forgotten last year so quickly? We all know it's going to be more of the same thing year.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@MichaelPorter Yeah, I don't think it's forest fires yet. Someone in the neighbourhood seems to use wood to heat their house a lot, so at like 8:30 in the morning I'd be inclined to blame them. It was around even in the late afternoon too though so I'm not sure.

@Nerdfest Ah, well that was them then. They did sound low and fast, not like a takeoff, but I have a cat on my lap so I didn't rush outside ๐Ÿ˜

I have attempted lavender scones today. Mine don't look anything like the recipe ones, so I'm not sure what's happened. But these look better, so hopefully they taste great.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

Even the next day the scones are spectacular! Having one right now with lavender coffee ;) one other small difference is that I used soy milk instead of almond milk. I like soy milk in baked goods better because it has more fat and the protein is a bonus. The protein may help in its own way too, I think it's more similar to dairy milk than almond milk is.

Well, we're out in the night, on a bit of urban farm and watching the skies. There's a lot more cloud than expected, but seeing stars overhead, and a crescent moon.

No sign of from here, but there's lots of light pollution and residual post sunset glow.

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Urg. Do you think they leave it like that on purpose? To look pretty?

mariellequinton,
@mariellequinton@ottawa.place avatar

@ottaross Yeah, but wouldn't they have shades they could lower? It would help keep the heat in at night too.

YouTube has just given up and is now just throwing commercials to me in any language. English, French, Chinese, and this week Korean! I have my language preferenced right there, in the YouTube settings, but ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

@WhippoorwillSong Sometimes I get Hindi (I'm guessing), but yeah no Spanish or other European languages outside of French and English.
