A lot of of people on social media such as LinkedIn will post "What do you think this python code will do? A, B, or C" questions.

Are these useful to anyone?

The code is generally of a style I'd recommend people avoid writing, or that I'd question in a code review. Often it's using strange edge-cases for what's possible...but not what's idiomatic or "good".

I can't imagine they're useful to people learning . I imagine they deter some people from using . Am I wrong?

martinpeck,
@martinpeck@fosstodon.org avatar

If they're aimed at the more experienced as fun quiz questions, then fair enough.

Maybe I'm just annoyed that I don't do very well at them :)

It's also not a phenomenon specific to #python. I see the same thing with other languages (most often with #javascript)

    @kate I don’t understand what your supposed to do with it. “Come in let’s play” and “Come in gone shopping” are wildly different. “Come in, in need of help” is something very different again!

    In the #curl project, we spend 3.3 days/day on running tests - around 140,000 tests per commit/PR. In addition to what every developer runs in their own systems of course.

    Our test failure rate in CI jobs is at 0.004%, which is annoyingly high when running this many tests.

    Data from Dan Fandrich's curl up 2024 talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxNdAm845Ts

    @bagder That's a great presentation. Lots of interesting stats and insights. The 3.3 days/day stat is incredible.

    One of my "tricks" to stay sane is to make sure the #curl list of open issues and PRs is always short (<100). Things that go stale and nobody is working on will get moved to documents and queues elsewhere. I know this is sometimes controversial, but it helps us communicate what is actually being worked on and it keeps maintainers from overload.

    martinpeck,
    @martinpeck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @bagder clearly communicating what's not being worked on/considered is just as important and letting people know what you are working on. A quick and clear "thank you, but no" is better than watching your issue or PR rot over time.

    Mehrad, to github
    @Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

    I'm frustrated with issue search. I am looking for issues on repo that contains "sort" or "sorting". Github says there is no issue containing "sort" or "sorting"

    https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues?q=sorting+

    but I have found this:

    https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/4807

    martinpeck,
    @martinpeck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Mehrad Not sure why you see nothing. Your search URL works for me and finds both open and closed issues.

    martinpeck,
    @martinpeck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Mehrad Yep. 2 open, 7 closed. I see this both signed in, and in an InCognito session too. Hopefully just a caching issue that won't happen again.

    I'm late to the party, but #TheMagnusArchives is one of the best #horror #fiction #podcasts (tbh, one of the best stories) I've listened to. I can't recommend it highly enough.

    Over the 5 seasons it builds from a set of seemingly disconnected and unsettling stories into an epic tale.

    Portrait is pretty cool for long #github issues with lots of comments and same for long code files.

    If a vampire is unable to grow hair after being turned because they are dead then how are they going to replace the hair they loose in day to day life?

    What do they do if they break a nail?

    Why, when I read a book with this version of vampire lore about three years ago, can I not stop thinking about this?

    martinpeck,
    @martinpeck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Clare @twipped @kate don’t they revert/reset to their turned state? It’s not healing; it’s more like an “undo”. So, break a nail and then it reappears after they undo that change.

    @pvizeli Many people post here with a #introduction tagged post to introduce themselves, and declare their interests (and then pin that post on their profile).

    I've found this platform to be very different to Twitter...almost always in a good way. I hope you do too!

    Lenny's #Podcast is generally great, but this episode really resonated with me. In particular, the discussion about the need for simplicity in both software and organisations, and how hard you need to work to make it happen.

    If you listen to nothing else, listen to these two sections:

    (37:26) Fighting the second law of thermodynamics
    (40:29) The importance of simplicity in running a business
