Where is my delight
On a misty may morning?
Cattle amble over the meadow
from the morning milking shed
Quiet in their breathy wonder
At the silver grass.
Dewdrops shimmer
On Dandelion clocks
Damp fluff no time will measure
But quicksilver-lit,
they shine like stars.
What music can I hear?
Goldfinches twinkle
lighting the walls with glitter
And a Curlew sings
Her descending song
Down to the heath
And her treasure.

No future, no past,
Only the present moment
No view of distant hills
Or monuments
Most might say
the day is dull
But we choose how to see it.
The mile-long field
Glows golden in the grey
A million buttercups are singing
Lifting the larks to a golden sun
The single cornflower
Of the early spring
A bright blue galaxy
With new stars forming
None decaying
Bursting with light
And a gentle radiance
Lifting my heart
And lifting the Lapwing
Into the dance.

Warm and peaceful
An alabaster light
Softness and ease
Dandelion clocks
Stopped at one
And the world
Takes a breath.
I tasted the leaf
Of a milkmaid flower
And it was sweet and spicy
Honeyed air
All around me
This stillness is
Loaded with life
It's generous and giving
Singing with brightness
And skylarks rejoicing.

Late afternoon
Spring warmth
Fine rain
and misty tops
Petrichor in the air
And golden dandelions
Swoon with the weight
Of silver rain
Shining like the sun
The meadow throngs
Golden birds
Rise and fall
In whispering clouds
Of lovers glitter
And swallows swim
Against the sky
And with each other
Lovely spring
Dandelion sun
and golden plovers

There's a music
Coming from the mountain
In the tumble of the stream
And the rustling of the reeds
As a gentle springtime breeze
Unsettles silver waters
And the rattling silver birch
A brown hare
Dazzles from the heather
And disturbs a courting
Curlew pair
Away to the top of the sky
Rising, calling wildly
Each to the other
I Love you, love you

Theres silver blossom
In spindly trees
The other side
Of Lesser's wood
Daffodils are glowing
golden in the mist
All aligned
And swaying softly
in a south-westerly breeze
They always know
Where to look for the light
Even when the day is grey
And the fog lies heavy
On narrow shoulders

Even with the wind against you
Blowing you back
To where it thinks you belong
You are calm, and peaceful
Breathtaking in your presence
Utterly yourself.
Silent and glowing
Urgent and flowing
May I wait a while
And watch you going?
I feel soft wings
Silk against the rasping air
Ethereal light
Surrounding you
Gathers around you
You are all I can see
And you shine.
May all the spectres
of a troubled world receed
For this one moment
of golden, ghostly peace

There's a golden rim
To the cup of morning
And a furnace burns
To the east
A dark grey canvas
Is lit with ochre
The meadow sings
With a yellow glow
Black geese in silhouette
A living arrrowhead
Tears across the ragged sky
Charged by wind
and wild abandon
Calling with joy
As they fly.

Almost there
At top of the hill
The winter summit
almost in sight
Everything is right
I can almost touch
the turn of the year
Feel it in the light
The gale plays strings
Through the high high wire
A deep drum roll
Through the dry stone wall
A choir sings through red girders
And glorious dawn breaks
With a brass fanfare
The greatest story ever told
As the sun rises
Lighting the Emley mast
In gold.

Thick fog
I can just see the walls
On the other side of the field
There's a wind blowing
And it's warmer than I thought
Four fat fieldfares
flee from the Rowan
Chuckling as I pass.
They make me laugh
I laugh like a loon
At the invisible moon
And if anyone saw me
They would think I was mad.

Back to the grey
And the black
And the shining roads
And misty lights
Sharp jets of muddy spray
shifted my way by
Speeding wheels and
Shocking driving
Rain dancing
Bouncing from my yellow jacket
Front light flashing
Puddle splashing
Duck quacking
Gull clacking
Dirty dog of a day

There is wild weather coming
I can feel its heft
In the weight of the cloud
A tempestuous sky
Beethoven's frown
A furrowed brow
To the storm-lit hill
Pouring down from
A pale green sky
The hue of a seasick sailor.
Gulls are high
Wheeling, screaming their joy
In the heaving wind
and the blinding rain
The gale slows my flow
Down the pebble-dashed
Puddle-splashed
River-road home

A glory
The golden glow
In the eastern sky
Lights the cold edge of
Sharpened air
This morning
Takes my breath away
The first glitter of winter
On the shining road
The Raven high
In a clear blue sky
And the gorse
Smiles back at the sun.
There is music too
In the turning of my wheels
And the trill of wrens song
Thrilling the hawthorn.

Ethereal light
The sounds of wild geese calling
Seeing with my ears
There's a warmth
To be found
At the edge of things
The faint friction
of barely touching.
The sound of hello
Seems so far away.
Gruff riders compete
Racing away to the top of the hill
Me, I'm happy enough,
looking for owls.

Home
Into the deep of the green
The coolness of autumn air
Pushing me on
To the sound of the geese
And the roaring bull
Up to the mills
That are lost in the mist
And the mast sitting proud
On the side of the road
And the little dark flocks
Of finches and pipits
And tinkling linnets
Over the rocks
The blackness of berries
Still held by the Elder
The red of the Rowan.
The turn of the wheel
The ticking of clocks.

And suddenly
They appear
In their hundreds
and thousands
Little stars
Lighting the mist
In drifts of purple
With hearts of gold
Enticing the sun
From behind her veil
In pale shades of lilac
And deep lavender
All of the colours
In the key of blue
And in the midst of all of it,
You.
And I'm remembering
With my sad little smile.

Kintzugi
Echoes of a glorious sunset
Still somehow present
The lilac-white dome
Of this mist-hazy morning
Fractured in the east
by the rising sun
Faint golden edges
Revealing hidden layers
In a sky more beautiful
For its brokenness.
The gold of the gorse
Lighting the heather
Where a ticking wren
Curtseys like a Dipper
In a purple stream.
A dark butterfly
Rises from a thistle
Like a line
from a forgotten poem

Mist on the tops
Silver in the valleys
Goldfinch clouds
Tinkle high overhead
The soft exhalations
Of raindrops on turning leaves
Soft golden acorns
On my moorland oak
Little lights in the grey
I try to catch
Summer's wake
Between me and the clouds
As a hundred beautiful geese
Disappear into the breeze
Their strong wings
Strumming the air

The dog days
Are nearly over
It has been quiet
On the hill
A bright start
To the morning
A golden greeting
from the sun
But clouds of doubt
Returning
Like finches twittering
On prickly thistles
To dull the day
Only a Kestrel
To keep me company
Hovering silent
Above the edge
Over the harrowed meadow
And the muddy furrow
