For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

https://mastodon.social/@mcc/108199886340178151

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:

What I'm listening to today: "Modular Synth Triggered by Drum", Djo HxC

This track pairs a sick modular-synthesizer Cool Noise with the trick (there were a couple of these in my last thread) where a drum is rigged to fire a trigger on the eurorack, playing a note keyed to the synth's current pattern. So the drummer is kind of playing drums and bass synth at once. And then: drum solo. This is kind of short and it doesn't really go anywhere, but it's fun while it lasts.

What I'm listening to today: "Heavy Balloon", Fiona Apple

"Fetch the Boltcutters" was released 1 month into COVID. Ah!, we all went. How resonant! Everyone in lockdown can relate to this! Nobody noticed the fridge horror. She released it at the start of lockdown. So before COVID started Fiona had already been holed up inside, for however long, teaching herself the drums & stewing about ex-boyfriends.

Anyway here's a funk song about being depressed but also angry

What I'm listening to today: "Pop 6", Gas

This is some jangling, indistinct ambient. Sometimes it is good to listen to one meticulously-crafted sound for ten minutes. There's a bit of variation to keep things interesting but mostly this is just sort of like an atmospheric soundtrack to your life, assuming that the thing happening in your life right now is at least somewhat ominous.

One time my sister asked, sincerely surprised, why it is that I work with computers yet my laptop and phone were so old, and the only way I could think to explain it was to compare that scene in "Ratatouille", where somebody asks the antagonist food critic why someone who likes food is so thin and the critic says "I don't like food, I love it. If I don't love it I don't swallow"

Note: Since the above-described conversation, I did finally have to get a new phone. I don't like it as much :(

@Migueldeicaza Miguel since I have tasted the joy that is PEG parsing I do not want to go back. U just write a BNF. Sometimes literally if your language has operator overloading. It doesn't even have to be LL(k)

Thanks to the Union Station planners for putting in a wine store, a Sephora and a new agey alt med store called "the Detox store" but not the two things I need, which are a Rexall and a "Subway" sandwich store

Friends that you no longer have any way to contact because instead of getting their phone# or IM you assumed you could always just use Twitter DM and now neither they nor you use Twitter

Several people have replied to this post by pointing out that XMPP exists, but have you considered this counter-argument: XMPP does not exist

Internet means slow, heavy churn in your social circles as corporate IM services one by one die and are replaced with new corporate IM services and only people you thought to get the new handle for in the window where both old and new coexist survive to the next phase. If IM had been a general protocol like email instead of being captured by corporate "apps", could we have escaped this problem? Maybe this is easier for generations that actually used SMS instead of imprinting on AIM fully in 1999

@categulario I've heard of it. I mostly use Mercurial

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@categulario however curious I might be about darcs/pijul the problem remains that all these change control systems are weirdly incompatible with each other. So like, it's hard to do like a single project in a new system to experiment cuz what if you wind up with important code locked in a weird pizzle box :/

I continue to feel that this feature cluster is worse than being tracked by cookies from tracking pixels. Tracking pixels I at least have a reasonable understanding of when and why I get tracked: A website I visit can track me, and I can control this by what I do and don't block. If this is "topics" the browser seems to be gathering information independently and just volunteering it. That's creepier than creepy

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

One thing I still don't understand about "Topics" is whether a site that doesn't use the Topics feature can still be tracked, and used for ad targeting by, sites that do. Like could Google somehow derive that my website is "video games" related although I didn't touch the topics api

Tomorrow (Saturday the 19th) at 2 PM EST (11 AM PST) I am streaming "Humanity", a new game about which I know nothing except:

  1. It seems to be a puzzle game something like "Lemmings" except with the entire human population of Earth;
  2. The creator of Rez is somehow involved;
  3. A Shiba Inu is somehow involved.

If it turns out to suck, I will switch to "Pac-Man".

Watch at: https://twitch.tv/mcc111

A Shiba Inu

I had a dream last night I was watching (or maybe living in?) a serialized TV show about the Vatican's chief hydrologist, a gruff atheist played by an elderly Tom Hanks who constantly calls the Pope "Pops" to his face. His job becomes complex and interesting enough to set a show around because of increasing AGW flooding in Italy and because archaeological discoveries under Vatican City constantly uncover new rooms the clergy want to preserve but which Tom sees as an architectural/flooding risk

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

I'm not sure that's a real job and if it is it might be too nerdy to set a TV show around, but on waking I'm realizing that the scenes my subconscious served up of Tom Hanks getting into shouting arguments with the Pope (infuriated because Tom won't do what he says, but also since he's the guy keeping the foundations of all the Catholic Church's old buildings from crumbling from water damage he's the one guy he can't fire) were actually legitimately pretty funny
