By day I am a computer programmer with Index Data, where I have been happily and gainfully employed for 20 years.

By night, I am a vertebrate palaeontologist with the University of Bristol, specialising in sauropods: the biggest and best of all dinosaurs.

I am an advocate for open access, open data and open source, and also for open peer-review though I'm beginning to think pre-publication peer-review might be a mistake. I support #LFC.

Can someone help me identify this #insect that I saw crawling on a radiator in our home? The hind legs are noticeable longer than the front two pairs, sort of like a grasshopper (though it's obviously not one). You can get a sense of its size from the bit of AA battery at the top of the photo.

Harvey Elliott is well on my way to becoming my favourite player. His readiness to actually take a shot is part of this.

Is there a stupider error in the world than "The document XYZ.jpg can't be opened because it's in the Bin"?

How the heck is it the OS's prerogative to tell me I can't look inside the bin?

Unfortunately, the publishers are mostly standing on our toes."

Well, what a deeply disappointing match for . The thing is, Villa didn't have to do anything special to score three goals. We just handed the goals to them. Talk about self-destruction.

I like Neil Young's album After The Gold Rush, and I like the song Oh Lonesome Me from that album. But there is absolutely no excuse to rhyme "arms" with "charms" in any song later than the Gershwins.

It seems my University of Bristol account for some reason doesn't have access to The Paleontological Society Special Publications. Can anyone please email me a PDF of this one?

I don't think I've ever seen Harvey Elliott have a bad game. Sometimes I think we don't take him seriously because he's short (5'7") but really he has everything else but height. Speed of thought, speed across the ground, tenacity, creativity, shooting. Reminds me, more than anyone else, of Kevin Keegan. (Yes, I AM that old.)

How on EARTH have conceded two goals in a game they have so comprehensively bossed?

@colin @ernie @jessamyn @mem_somerville @RustyBertrand Sorry bother you all, but I noticed each of you mention newspapers.com which I don't have access to and can't make an account on for some reason. I am trying to get this article about a Wyoming dinosaur from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on 27 November 1898: https://www.newspapers.com/image/571391078/?match=1&terms=dinosaur

If anyone could email it to me I would be very grateful!

One of the little joys of is the pedantry in some of the entries.

For example, about the song Chattannogo Choo Choo:

  • The train is described as departing from Track 29 in Pennsylvania Station. At the time, the facility only had 21 tracks.

  • "You leave the Pennsylvania station 'bout a quarter to four", but The Birmingham Special departed at 12:30 p.m.

The Brachiosaurus altithorax holotype FMNH PR 25107 in the ground

I was cleaning out my Downloads directory — which, even after my initial forays, still accounts for 11 Gb that I really need to reclaim from my perptually almost-full SSD. And I found this beautiful image under the filename csgeo4028.jpeg. The thing is, I have no idea where this image came from. The file's timestamp says it's been 16 months since I downloaded it from somewhere, but there is no associated…

How Grav's not been booked for that pull-back, I don't know.

Even when it goes in 's favour, the standard of officiating is abysmal.

For all Alisson's heroics today — three great saves in among the good ones — we've somehow contrived to concede two goals from 0.69 xG. how do we do it?

I think the most disturbing aspect of recent performances is that the opposition is not having to do anything clever to score against us. It's enough just to lob a set piece into the box and nod it in; or kick it long and chase it. I don't understand how four such superb defenders and such a great goalkeeper can make up such an ineffective defence.

should by now have learned that the Everton defence is very strong in the air. There is no point hanging crosses in. They need to be driven in low.
