World Fantasy, Nebula, Tiptree finalist repped by Russ Galen. Curator of happiness. Gamer, parent, computer science student, language nerd, cancer brat. Whatever pronouns feel right to you.

My header shows my urban fantasy trilogy - BORDERLINE, PHANTOM PAINS, and IMPOSTOR SYNDROME, against a downtown L.A. backdrop. My profile pic shows an androgynous middle aged white person with buzzed hair, smiling warmly but perhaps a little shyly.

I know every mom thinks their kids are special. But some of those moms are 100% right and I am one of them.

It's been interesting watching the absolute chaos of my attempted planter boxes. Things thriving I thought would die. Things dying I was sure would thrive. So many mushrooms popping up. ?????

My Little Pony is my binge watch of choice during this chemo cycle and I had forgotten how much this silly little song means to me, especially the moment at 1:35 which is so brief but was such an epiphany gut-punch to me the first time I saw it. That moment of vulnerability in the middle of an otherwise relentlessly perky song, and most especially the way she resolved it.

It me, trying to find enough happy in myself, even on dark days, to lift up my friends too.

The "pursuit" of happiness isn't about chasing things you're sure will make you happier. It's less a pursuit, really, at all, than it is the recognition of potential sources of happiness that are already in your grasp.

The quality I admire most in humans is integrity, because without that the other qualities don't matter too much. What do I mean by integrity?

Your beliefs about equity/inclusion are the same whether you are the under- or over-represented group in the current context.

Your beliefs about free competition/consumer-driven economics w/o government interference are the same whether your industry is currently competing well or not.

Etc.

I am that rare, twisted, defective individual who prefers cake to pie.

But it has to be GOOD cake. Cheap bad cake is worse than pie. Worse than termites, actually.

I'm thinking of writing a book about how a deep understanding of mortality leads to better living. When it's finished, I want to get the word out as widely as I can. I know I still know people who have fairly large platforms, but I'm not going to pester anyone individually.

If you happen to see this message, you have wider reach than I do, and you'd be willing to help me boost the signal when I'm finished writing my little "life manual," please get in touch.

The greatest lesson I ever taught myself - a lesson that allowed me to become more patient, kind, compassionate, and selfless - was to demand that my own boundaries were respected and that I be given space to be myself and pursue basic happiness.

It seems counterintuitive, but by respecting yourself and demanding your boundaries be respected and your needs met, you can heal yourself enough to stop resenting others' happiness, stop thinking "me first," stop living in selfish desperation.

Haha, I have to ask people, because I can't Google it: ARE there any good search engines out there? Ones that still actually search the internet?

Take a break from the world's problems for one day. Turn the camera of your mind toward those things which restore and inspire you. Those things are also true, and also part of the real world. Even fantasy and fiction is created by real humans, by miraculous and unique minds unlike any other.

Your eyes are not "open" if they are ONLY open to troubles.

I keep going on about internet search, but it's fascinating to me. I have lived through an age without it, then watched geekdom awkwardly birth it, watched Google turn it into a pinnacle of knowledge-seeking that seemed to make human memory obsolete and earn a near-deserved monopoly, and then the same company, as gradually as the proverbial boiled frog, via the irresistible force of shareholder greed, render their name-making masterpiece so useless it was as though it had become uninvented.

I miss the days when a search engine would look for what you typed instead what it's pretty sure you meant to type.

I saw someone here say "LLMs are coming to gmail so we should all get out" - can someone explain to me what this means? I don't really follow "AI" news as it bums me out and there's nothing I can do about it except choose not to use it when possible.

But they're saying it like it's a non-opt-outable security risk, and abandoning gmail at this point would be more stress than I can currently handle, so can someone knowledgeable straighten me out on this supposed security risk? Like I'm four.

Anyone who thinks "cancel culture" is some newfangled thing has never read one (1) Regency novel.

Social consequences for certain actions, up to and including complete "ruination," are nothing new.

Meditation isn't "bad" for anyone unless you have wrong expectations about it. Most common thing I hear is "I can't shut off my thoughts." That's like being six and saying you can't bench press 200 pounds. Yeah, if you try that, you'll hurt yourself.

Meditation is like a bicep curl for the mind; it is the repeated process of losing focus and pulling it back (and no, it doesn't have to be to your breath). That regular exercise will yield results long term.

You can probably tell by the shift in the mood of my feed that it's been a rough few days for me. Don't give up on me. I've come back from worse with wisdom and warmth and jokes to share.

Soon I'll make your day a little better again. I promise.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: strobing effects don't add nearly enough to a show, game, or movie to be worth what they do to a significant percentage of the population.

Update on my randomly planted flowerbox: the alyssum and sunpatiens are flowering and flourishing. The primrose is sickly but continues to make new blooms. The regular impatiens are a droopy mess covered in spotty blooms and continuing to try to make new ones.

Weirdly, the impatiens I stuck in unprepared weedy soil just bc I couldn't bear to throw them away are doing better than the ones in the box.
