neotecha,

“‘I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People’s Faces Party.”

neotecha,

A TV Show (or cartoon) based around Among Us, feels like they missed the boat on Among Us popularity.

Then again, I loved Infinity Train, wish the show wasn't cut short by Zaslav's budget cuts. I could see Among Us being similar to The Thing (one of my favorite horror movies), i think there's a chance it's a good show

neotecha,

I have such mixed feelings about this. The show ended in such a perfect way (as it did the prior the times), but more Futurama is more Futurama

neotecha,

Jerboa 0.0.35 upgraded automatically for me.

At first it was crashing frequently, but it seems to have gotten somewhat better. Hopefully it will continue to improve

neotecha,

I wish I could see the crash logs to actually get insight as to specifically why jorbia is crashing for me

neotecha,

Fugitive is a common git plugin for Vim. If you're not using vim, not much to check out. If you are, highly recommend it!

neotecha,

When I read Hitchhiker's Guide, I pronounced it b'tell-jew-EEss

There's a thought that:

Never make fun of people for mispronouncing a word. It means they learned it by reading

Best I understand, this is a quote without a known attribution

neotecha,

This is the same (based) judge that previously ruled that the GAC ban for minors was unconditional.

The new ruling overturns the part of the ban that restricted Medicaid funding for going to GAC for adults.

Does anyone know what parts of the bill are still active? I'm guessing the requirement for informed consent is still required, but I don't know what else

neotecha,

Action games and adventure games used to be two separate genres, but their similarities caused people writing magazine articles to group them together, under a single term "action-adventure". You can think of it as "either or", rather than some weird neologism

neotecha,

Currently in Florida, don't have immediate plans to move. My mother-in-law is recently widowed, so we want to stay close.

I'm trans, but I also live with a lot of personal privilege (well paying job with non-state insurance, white, married, liberal city, no kids, haven't faced direct discrimination). The particular set of laws that Florida has passed are limited in how they affect me.

That's not to say i don't care -- I'm actually livid with my state government. Many of my trans/queer friends have rightly left the state already, but I personally can stay around for longer to push back as I can

I've spoken to my brother in Illinois, and if worse comes to worse, i have somewhere I can go if Florida becomes unlivable

neotecha,

I had to look a list of prequels, since I was having trouble just remembering some.

  • Might not be the greatest, but I remember really liking Rouge One
  • Cruella was a blast, but I could see people arguing that the main character was a completely different person than who was in the 101 Dalmations
  • The Thing (2011) did a good job, with some criticisms (over use of CGI). It was never going to be as great as the original, but I still enjoyed it
neotecha,

Whisk(e)y drinker here, preferring neat. I like all types, especially if they are sherry-finished.

I like too many for a concise list.

I think Stranahan's is the best bottle most people sleep on. It's a Single Malt made in the US, so most Scotch drinkers dismiss it because "it's not made in Scotland", but most American drinkers are looking more for Rye and Bourbon flavors. It's just delicious imo

Ardbeg Wee Beastie is another favorite. Peated Scotches aren't for everyone, but I think it has a great "campfire" quality

Navazos Palazzi is a Spanish whiskey that we really like, and it's one i never recommend to beginners. It's harsh and sweet, but somehow it works. I've heard it described as "maple cookie covered in fresh pavement", although I think it evokes more of that cut up tire that you can find on some playgrounds. It's basically "fuck you" in a glass, in the best possible way

For cocktails, i always go for Coke and Makers, with some grenadine.

neotecha,

Good to hear. So many people have written off Elemental, saying the trailer makes it look generic, like Pixar has lost their touch. Thing is, Disney and Pixar have a recent history of making boring or generic trailers, only for the movies to be great.

Unless it was met with poor critical reception, i would probably see it anyway

neotecha,

Asteroid City, The Blackening, and Elemental are the three big movies in theaters i want to see, but I won't have a chance to until next week.

neotecha,

Perhaps !asexual?

Only created a week ago, but it has a few active subscribers, could be worth checking out

neotecha,

Edgar Wright is a really good choice. He has such a distinctive style, lots of hits in his filmography

Trans people with accepting parents: How did your relationship change?

Hello there. Angry parents stories are sadly more common, but I remember reading back on Reddit a heartwarming story about a dad who accepted fully his daughter. So while we all know how "bad" relationships usually go, I'm curious to hear about people who had love and support in their journeys.

neotecha,

I don't think it makes a "good story", but my parents have accepted me.

My uncle is an established child psychology reaearcher (had been "chief psychologist" and "assistant director" at multiple children's hospitals. When I came out, they reached out to my uncle to ask for advice (especially for how sudden it appeared to them, when it was literally since I was a young teen for me), which he basically replied "if [dead name] is talking to you about this, it's something they've been dealing with for a long time". I think this helped them a lot

My parents took some time to come to terms with my transition. They struggled with my new name and using the right pronouns, but they put in the work, and we have a fairly solid relationship now. We were never super close (still aren't), but I have no qualms giving them a call sometimes, or spending holidays with them.

Ronny DeFeo, of the Amityville Horror fame, was my wife’s cousin. What’s your unique family history or association? (en.wikipedia.org)

Fun family fact: this guy was my wife’s cousin. Her family lived nearby on Long Island, and her mom and grandmother always were strict with the family about not having anything to do with them. Even going by the house was “forbidden” (as much as anything can be in an old Italian family). Of course that’s the first thing...

neotecha,

My great, great uncle was Gene Krupa, a popular/influential swing drummer in the 1920s through 1940s. By contrast, i have absolutely zero musical talent.

My third cousin, once removed (that is, my father's third cousin) is Mike Shanahan, the former head coach for the Denver Broncos

Not a family relation, but someone famous I know... I taught a Roller Derby clinic alongside Erin Jackson, who won the Gold Metal at the most recent Olympics in speed skating

Honestly, I put little stock into these relationships. They're little more than personal trivia at this point

neotecha,

Thanks for the update and for the link to the reasoning -- I had completely missed it.

Based on the initial post (only mentioning defederation without linking to the Details), it sounded like the three servers had a falling-out of some sort, but this sounds reasonable. I can appreciate the difficulty of trying to maintain a welcoming environment.

From a user perspective, I think I'm mostly frustrated with the lack of visibility with these changes, specifically trying to keep track of what I do and don't have access to. I don't think that's the responsibility of beehaw to implement, but I might continue to look for solutions

neotecha,

I must have missed a memo. Why did beehaw defederate with lemmy.world/sh.itjust.works?

I really want to like Lemmy, but if we can randomly lose access to content like that, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

neotecha,

You're awesome, thank you.

I saw the "instances" link at the bottom, but I assumed it was just a variation on the join-lemmy.org site (which I see is another one of the links down there). Please forgive me, still learning the platform :-)

neotecha,

Always fun to learn something new. I've primarily used vim since 2016, and i never knew g_ to jump to last non-space character in the line

neotecha,

I might have an artist now (recommendation from someone in my derby league). If I go through with it, I'll make sure to follow up with pictures :-p

neotecha,

I think the concept is intuitive and interesting, but the implementation/interface isn't.
