You can pry the legacy @pcalc widget out of my cold dead hands. I use it basically every day and honestly I should install it on my partner’s phone because it feels like every time I use theirs I need a darn calculator and it’s never where I want it to be

Chuckled to myself at in the commercial with , thinking “oh yeah Apple’s putting their most popular show’s star in the commercial with Messi.

Like 10 minutes later it occurred to me that was not an Apple commercial, it was for Modelo. Weird that the Apple TV+ cinematic universe works this way 😂

Turned on iPhone Stolen Device Detection.

Dropped my phone and cracked the screen (for the first time in 16+ years).

Made an Apple Store appointment to replace the screen.

Forgot to disable FindMy before leaving home.

Anyway, sitting in the Apple Store for an hour watching the countdown to when I can turn off FindMy and get the phone fixed.

TIL that @marcoarment loves and that made me VERY happy to hear a reference to that game!

My dad introduced my brother and I to that game and we used to play for HOURS. Some of my best memories with my dad.

AppleTV should be more like an iPad and less like a Roku. It should have a Home Screen that is a configurable dashboard of iPad/Mac-style widgets instead of a grid of apps.

Let me see the family calendar, shared notes or reminders, a photo slideshow, Up Next, a few streaming app tiles, a pic-in-pic video, etc. It’s a 65” screen in the main room of most houses. When I’m not actively watching something, I want to use it for more than showing drone footage (as beautiful as it is…)

The 50ct/user Core Tech Fee Apple is charging as part of the changes seems pretty reasonable on the surface, but when you dig in you find it’s pretty unsustainable for any medium size company.

Great for really small apps, but don't get more than a million users, or things get real expensive real fast.

Probably not great for Spotify/Netflix style companies either. You get around IAP, but then pay 50ct/user for EVERYONE, not just the ones you got via Apple. https://objc.social/@macguru17/111823030032280167

@jimmylittle The other thing that's insane is that I believe it is true for apps on the App Store as well. If it is, I will be pulling my apps from the EU store 😬 I'm nowhere near 1m downloads, but I can't risk it. My apps are free

Perhaps indicative of a breakdown in developer relations, or just unwilling to blindly prop up a new platform after seeing the power it gave Apple last time round, Netflix has decided to give Apple the finger: want Netflix on your $3,500 movie headset? Use the website.

Negotiating tactic, or are we going to see more of this? I can't imagine a movie headset without Netflix

And I never browse anywhere but the TV app. So I’m seeing everything BUT Netflix there. It’s nothing but downsides for them if I never open their app

There are lots of jokes like “this wouldn’t happen with ICE cars, you can just bring a can of gas over!”, which is true - but doesn’t actually solve the problem. I’ll usually take any opportunity to dunk on Tesla, but this one is really about science.

Like any vehicle, EVs need some love and attention. A frozen battery won’t charge. Are any carmakers adding battery warmers to their EVs? Seems like it should be a U.S. federal requirement, like a working speedometer.

Is there anyone that can explain the Costco Free Sample people to me?

What would make a presumably pretty well-off person give up 5-10 minutes of their day waiting in line for a free cracker?

Given that apps on iOS are so sandboxed anyway, I really wish you could install the same app twice. Run it entirely separately with two different accounts. Would be great for things like Google Meet…

Dumb question: how does iMessage choose what number/email to message? Sometimes on my dad's phone when he taps "Message" on my contact it chooses my work email address, and then tries to MMS that. Or can I add that to my Apple ID somehow?

@christianselig @film_girl might be worth deleting the text threads he has with you on the “wrong” email address on his phone, in my experience this helps because the iPhone at least tries to pick the one you have a thread with (I think?)

I love my Nintendo Switch, but it is a very bad member of the USB-C society. Some power adapters don’t work, some USB->HDMI adapters don’t work, some headphone adapters don’t work.

In addition, its power handling is very bad. It can be completely dead and I plug it into, say, an iPad charger for several hours. Guess what? Still completely dead. Apparently 18W isn’t enough to charge it. Plug it into a 35W charger? No problem.

Why does it need 20W+ to charge? The battery isn’t that big.

Starting to suck Mastodon posts into my Obsidian vault using and . IFTTT monitors the RSS feed of my Mastodon account, and whenever a new entry hits, it creates a text file in Dropbox. Then Hazel on my Mac grabs the Dropbox file, reformats dates and whatnot, and saves it as a Markdown file in my Obsidian vault.

Neat.

I do this because my vault has an “On this day" query that shows me posts, notes, and other stuff from this day in past years. I do this with Instagram also.
