For years now, I’ve rarely gotten SMS spam. But about two weeks ago I started getting 5-10 spam SMS texts per day, every day. They’re all crap like this, most of from those 5-digit short code numbers. Did I just stumble onto some sort of list, or is this happening to others suddenly too?

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@alexcox @gruber do you have the AT&T ActiveArmor app? Typically I’m against provider firewalls, but its free and apparently has spared me from a lot (not all) of spam calls

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@gruber @alexcox to be clear, I still get a good amount of spam calls, so it’s by no means perfect. But any reduction is a win I guess 🤷‍♂️

Home improvement question: the apartment I live in has those dang metal studs instead of wood making hanging heavy stuff a lot harder. I can find them, they're 16" apart, but really hard to drill threw. How do I know it's a stud and I didn't find a pipe/duct/wire plate, etc?

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig I don’t know about plumbing, but many stud finders have a “wire locator“ mode that can pick up the electrical signal in a wire and let you know whether it’s that or not

Kinda a shame that the game industry is so lazy about female representation. Remember when first Pac-Man came out and then they released Ms Pac-Man?

Today I found out theres Ms Flight Simulator

iPad feature I'd love: deep sleep. I find whenever I go a few days or a week between using an iPad, it's often dead or almost dead. An auto-deep sleep mode after 24 hours of non-use would be awesome, even if it took 5 seconds or so to wake back up

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig I tend to keep my iPad in AirPlane mode, and it helps a lot. I have a shortcut that runs at 3am that turns it off for 10 minutes and then back on again so iCloud data doesn’t end up hilariously out of date

My interactions with @dave so far today:

  1. “Hi nice to hear youOHDAMN beeeeeeeep
  2. "Can you hear me? I can't hear you”
  3. "Ooops my microphone has caught on fire"
  4. "Ok let’s test this disappears from the call
  5. "Something's gone terribly wrong”

Guess we're postponing the recording :beardthesystem:

Anyone have experience here? What’s worth paying for?

Help me avoid making a bad decision 🙏

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@matthewcassinelli I got the 694 (currently $199) about a year ago, and I LOVE having it. If you are willing to spend more, I’d say that I wish I had the one that empties itself into a larger bin, but don’t let anyone tell you that the entry level ones aren’t good 👍

Two thoughts:

  1. This would be an incredible product management gig. The things a journaling app can do when it has access to your photos, health, location, call and messaging logs, etc. is mind-blowing.

  2. I guess if they’re just hiring engineers now, we won’t be seeing a Journal app until at least spring 2024. https://mastodon.social/@BickyBhullar/110979297218067945

nickfoster,

@jimmylittle I was equally concerned that they’re still hiring for this position 😂

The real tragedy of iPad is the vast gulf between how much potential it had as a platform, and Apple's disinterest in letting it live up to that. It is easy to imagine an alternate universe where iPad grew up to outright replace desktop computing, in all shapes and sizes, running powerful, complex software good enough to supplant everything we used a Mac for. A modern do-over of the entire personal computing industry. Nobody looks at iPhone and thinks 'oh this could be so much more’, but iPad?

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@stroughtonsmith people have been dissing the iPad by saying “it’s only a content consumption device” basically since its inception, which they wouldn’t say if it didn’t have the potential to be more.

No one criticizes a television for not allowing for content creation or productivity.

If I want to run a dead simple VPN from a Mac into my house network what should I look at? Router is pfSense, can run any VM needed, don't have a static IP, do have DDNS setup.

nickfoster,

@paul I use OpenVPN and it’s always worked great for me. Free plan allows 3 concurrent devices, so the Mac at home and up to two remote clients connected at a time

Apple Podcasts looks great, but the functionality needs a bit of help.

  • Chapter skip in CarPlay
  • Strip-silence
  • Better show notes support

@overcastfm gets all of this right, and adds fantastic Shortcuts support to get show notes, URLs, timestamps, etc. Add to that SmartSpeed and Voice Boost, and there’s no contest.

I wonder if third-party apps can access the alternate artwork 🤔 https://isfeeling.social/@matt/110862976469073074

nickfoster,

@tashen I’m on the dev beta for iOS and the public beta for watchOS and I’ve had almost 0 issues. A little bit of keyboard glitchiness from time to time, and some shortcut actions were missing the other day, but nothing that totally broke my experience
