I don't really remember the advice imparted to me in commencement speeches.

But when I had my diplomas mailed to me, there was some very consistent and useful advice printed on the envelopes.

I’m trying out Tootle as a Mastodon client, not that anything is wrong with a browser for the good old World Wide Web. There’s a white star and a black star you can click on. Other than being a reference to Open-Apple & Closed-Apple, and Mos Def & Talib Kweli, what do these things mean?

A weird thing about mastodon - there's no hyperlinks.. as in you can't select some text and link it to a URL. This must be an accessibility nightmare for people using screenreaders? and just seems really sad to miss out on this core feature of the web.

@yaxu Twitter must have started this? You could have a link, but not a link under text. And then of course on IG you can’t have a link at all.

With Rafael Pérez y Pérez, I wrote “Computational Models for Understanding Narrative,“ just published! We discuss symbolic models of narrative and how LLMs, while they are intriguing, are not the same and cannot do the same things.

I’ve been trying to buy a @frameworkcomputer laptop today. I put two of them in my “cart” to compare.

It turns out, there is no way for you yourself to remove an item from your cart. I tried “duplicating” one in case that might let me change the quantity to zero; no, it left me with three computers. One needs to contact support... Which I did five hours ago. No reply yet.

Finally, thanks to this answer from the Chicago Manual of Style, I know how to write this sort of citation properly:

“Text generated by Ouija, Salem, Mass: Parker Brothers, August 30, 2023”

Amazing DHQ special issue on Critical Code Studies, beginning with a great survey of work in the field so far by Mark Marino & Jeremy Douglass. I highly recommend at least this introduction for those interested to see how the humanistic analysis, and close reading, of source code has led to new insights
