ninjamice,

There was a thread on hackernews a few days ago (maybe even yesterday, time is a construct) where someone shared a screenshot of a pop up ad served to them by the OS itself.

Wtf. Why would anyone willingly use that crap?

ninjamice,

My employer was not part of this trial but has been doing this since Spring 2022. There’s been no increase in hours/workday or decrease in salary (and in fact, I got a raise—I think most people got at least a COLA).

We ran our own trial and the results are honestly even more positive than I would’ve thought myself.

ninjamice,

Cell service on the TTC needs to be a priority

ninjamice,

Oh absolutely we need to fund social services better, but in the meantime can we at least push (our reps to push) the Big 3 to allow people to stay connected.

It won’t fix the problem, but that’s not what I’m talking about when I say we should be able to call or text on the subway.

ninjamice,

I’m a big anti-car person (I’m middle aged and gave never owned one) and that made me roll my eyes. Someone should tell them about that, actually. And that the media doesn’t report on that is ridiculous (though I suppose it’s not the point of this particular story).

Any Canadian's considering moving to the USA?

I’m kind of in a strange boat right now where I’m really comfortable in Canada yet I can’t shake this feeling I need to get over to the US of A in order to take advantage of that strong USD. I, like many Canadians, work for an American firm and have a TN visa. Recently, my employer offered to sponsor me for a green card,...

ninjamice,

No way. I moved here from there (I’m Canadian now!) and every day I’m gladder I got out.

I’d probably make more money there, but there are things I value more than money and my life is significantly better in Toronto than it ever was in any of the three states I lived in.

ninjamice,

I’m not sure how to describe it beyond saying life feels a lot less confrontational here in Canada, even living in the largest city in the country.

Obviously there are problems here, but it feels much more like an actual society than a collection of people who happen to live near each other.

It’s not even about healthcare or anything specific, those are just symptoms IMO. It’s a larger philosophical difference between the countries

This blame game over Canadian wildfire smoke has got to stop

This new normal of near-constant wildfire smoke annoys me as much as the next person. But it serves as a reminder that we share one fragile atmosphere that we're collectively screwing up. Fruitless to waste all this energy pointing fingers like children when we should be joining hands to fix this. It's like nature's warning...

ninjamice,

I became a citizen this month after applying back when we still had a Queen and I got tripped up when saying the oath due to this—I’m on my 30s, there’s been a Queen forever, I’m not used to having a King. I’m sure I’ll get used to it at some point but man that felt weird.

ninjamice,

I like to play Gathering Storms rules, with Secret Societies enabled and abundant resources.

I absolutely hate the Zombie Defense mode. I don’t know if I am playing it wrong, but it feels unbalanced and WAY too hard.

ninjamice,

Wait until they realize network effects mean people leaving will make their reddit experience worse.

ninjamice,

I created a community for Civ on the lemmy.ca instance like two minutes ago!

I'll miss the Toronto communities too. They were good.

ninjamice,

I had a similar issue, turns out the username I'd chosen was too long. After I shortened the name it went through.

Of course if your username was greg that's not it, but leaving this for anyone else who may find it.

edit: in hindsigh might have been a taken username.

ninjamice,

Just joined today! Going to be fun to find new communities to interact with.

Thank you for making a Canadian instance. I became a citizen this month, and I couldn't be happier about it.
