I'm just a lonely orange cat watching the moon from the windowsill on a starry night.

So... is forum.fail moderated at all? Hello! Anyone home? Just making sure I'm not shouting into a void here.

Doing something with empty magazines? (forum.fail)

Not that we have a lot of magazines on forum.fail so far, but most of them right now cover hyper-specific retrogaming topics, and have had no activity at all since this instance opened, not even an introductory post. Maybe we should do something about that? I don't know, merging them for example....

nosycat,

That still doesn't explain why the block button doesn't seem to work.

nosycat,

Ooh, so domain block does something else entirely: it hides threads with links to the domain in question. That's another thing I was wondering how to do; was looking for a filtering option. Thank you so much!

nosycat,

I had a Reddit account for all of ten minutes, many years ago. Does it count?

Actually this is my second try to join the Threadiverse, too, except this time it might just stick for a change. Coming from the Fediverse side, where I've been since 2008 or 2009. Caught the tail end of Usenet, too, but to me forums are what's worth preserving and/or reviving here.

nosycat,

When Oracle of all companies calls you out... you might be the baddie.

nosycat,

Meh, kbin works better on mobile, gets along with Mastodon better, and it's generally nicer. People make better posts, too.

owen, to random

Is there a way to have a feed that's only the magazines I'm subscribed to on kbin? Because on the instance I use (kbin.social), it's a bunch of magazines that I'm not subscribed to on my feed.

nosycat,

@owen ...Yes? See in the hamburger menu at the top right. You can make it your home page from Settings -> General -> Appearance. It's the very first drop-down.

nosycat, to kbin

Can't help but notice a difference between Lemmy and : when the workload is too high, the former crashes entirely, while the latter mostly just fails to federate, but continues to work locally. For example. I can't seem to load the microblog tab until I disable federation, but then it works perfectly.

nosycat,

Sure, you have the legal right to cover someone else's song without asking permission first, but you still have to pay them royalties afterwards, at fair market rates.

nosycat,

Active uniques were high, the amount of time people spent on the site was continuing to grow, and new accounts were being created at a rate faster than accounts were being closed. I shook my head; I didn’t think that was enough. A few months later, the site started to unravel.

Sounds a lot like the way ecosystems collapse. At first nothing seems amiss, maybe a slow decline, but hardly worrying. Time passes, and you start to think nothing bad will happen after all. Then an inflection point is reached, and catastrophic failure ensues in an extremely short time. And there's no going back after that.

Open source developers - have the recent moves by RedHat changed your opinion of using non-GPL licenses?

The new license terms for RHEL are structured to stop subscribers from exercising their rights under the GPL. For now they are still providing source code albeit in a less convenient form, but technically they only need to do this for GPL licenses packages and they could remove code for BSD /MIT / Apache licensed packages....

nosycat,

RedHat's dick move amply demonstrates that the GPL does not, in fact, protect anyone's rights in any meaningful way. So yes, I now consider it useless as well as restrictive. Clearly the GPL only hampers us, the little people. Might as well be radically permissive.

nosycat,

+1 for FediDB, it's how I could explore kbin instances and pick this one.
