Welcome to my tiny corner of the internet! I'm an accessibility specialist for WhatsApp, which is about the least exciting thing about me. I also play video games--while blind! I hosted a politics podcast with Matt Cooper called The Game Is Rigged from 2017-2018. I've produced and acted in the Worm full-cast Audiobook project. I host a weekly show called Thoughtfood on Venom.FM from 12 to 3 PM PST on Sundays. I also sing and play drums. I'm even a snappy dresser--though this is disputed!

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: just writing "content warning" on a post isn't actually a content warning. It is virtue signaling.

If you actually care about warning your followers about objectionable content, use the content warning feature to obscure it. That's literally why it exists.

I really don't understand why I have to explain this very simple concept to grown adults who have been on the internet for years.

Edit: correct homonym usage. Thanks, internet!

Contacted Microsoft support to resolve an issue with paypal. Perfectly normal, cordial chat. The support person said I was the only nice person they'd talked to today... Which, yay, I'm awesome, great. But it made me feel bad for them! No reason to yell at people who are there to help you. I was wondering why they buried the text chat option, now I understand: people are assholes. If you think this is shitting on corpos in some cool way, or whatever, believe me when I say to you: it is not.

What would it take to get natural voice support into NVDA? My understanding is that Microsoft wants to steer people towards Azure, but it's difficult to see how that would work in practice. Has anyone approached them about making this work?

I genuinely like being on Mastodon.

I don't say this enough (on Mastodon) and I should.

I really did grow to loathe my own presence on X, how I kept seeing things that would make me mad but I kept looking anyway.

It's much better here. I'm happy. It's an important difference.

What are some well-run, mid-sized mastodon instances that are allowing federation with threads? I assume masto social is, but I'd rather avoid the mothership.

Psst!

No one tell Trump about the National Presidential Alert system.

Imagine if he ever figured out there's basically a twitter that only he could use baked into every cell phone.

Literally every day "BRRAAAAP! BRRRRRAAAAP! This is a presidential alert! The failing New York times will be doing a totally made up fake news story about my perfect and legitimate businesses. Letitia James is a phony left-wing prosecutor who has never been fair. Joe Biden is old. Keep America great again again!"

The latest proof Apple hates its users and views them with utter contempt: I am prompted to enter settings to verify my AppleID in order to sign in. There is a go to settings button, or a not now button. I do not need to sign in now, so I click not now. Psych! The popup reappears immediately. Apparently they thing "not now" means "in 2 seconds." Take a hint, Apple. No means no.

Happy we're doing this! The reality is they were already happening, but in a dumb way that was bad for everyone. So what does propper support look like? I see two things:

-The post author should be alerted when they are quoted. To do otherwise encourages conversation about you without you. This is Mean Girls, and frowned upon in polite society.

-QP's should be opt out. Similar to CW's, they should be collapsed by default and allow members to filter and mods to limit them as needed.

I was today years old when I learned that neural Polly TTS voices are only available in select regions!

You're not locked out of using them if you're region's unsupported, or anything. You just have to change to a supported one. By which I mean,, you set your configuration to point from (for example) us-west-1 to us-west-2. If you do not do this, the only hint you get as to why your voices aren't working is the error "invalid region."

What the fuck, Amazon? Why are you the worst at everything?

Complaint 1: WhatsApp doesn't provide screenreader notification when you receive a new message. Obviously this shows their lack of attention to accessibility. Uninstalling!

Complaint 2: how can I turn off all these notifications whenever I get a new message? So annoying! I am deleting the app if this continues.

(There is a setting to turn off background notifications already)

Can't win.

Please pitty the poor tech bro.

Accessibility, where "please provide us with a list of issues so we can fix them" is the wrong fuckin' answer.

So MK1 finally added crossplay. I set up a WB account and connected all my gamer accounts, thinking that this would let me see other people who have also connected their gamer accounts who I am friends with. But this functionality does not exist! All you can do is search for other WB accounts. Am I stupid, or are they stupid? pretty sure it is they who are stupid this time.

I've heard a lot of discussion around the question of, "when is the right time to disclose your disability?" In various settings.

As someone born with pretty obvious blind eyes, I've always found this question somewhat amusing and off the mark. It must be nice, I think, to get to choose.

On the other hand, I do consider it a sign that I have "done well" when I succesfully conceal my disabled status from others, and view it as a failure when it is emphasized.

Not sure what that says.

Why buy Waves Creative?

I snagged the vocal production bundle a few years ago for around $350. That also let me pick three free plugins, and free updates for a year. Now I need a new plugin, so I bought one new plugin, and a second one while I was there, for $65. This gives me another free plugin, another another year of updates, which includes plugins that were newly added to the bundle.

I now have all the plugins I will ever need! The subscription would drown me in plugins, and cost more!
