"A judge blocks the foreclosure sale of Elvis' Graceland, after his heir alleges fraud"
A fascinating story, but what got me was the bit about Graceland being valued at $400 million. For 14 acres. That's about $28M per acre. That's approaching mid-town-Manhattan prices.
This how much Elvis was revered? Still an amazing draw? Can't think of any other person whose home has so much value.
@davemark The notary claim is probably going to be the most critical. Notaries keep a log book of every notarization they make, and if she claims she didn't notarize the document, she'll have a log book without any entry for such as evidence as well.
@JenMsft I think this is what... people do. I don't understand it. I neither retain tabs nor bookmarks: I let autocomplete find URLs I've visited before.
Trying to convert a Sqlite database into a mysql database is a certified nightmare. I had no idea... for some reason I thought it was going to be trivial :(
@frigginglorious Hahaha oh no, not MediaWiki! I am actually amidst the opposite move, trying to restore an old bare metal MediaWiki into a Sandstorm grain for long-term archival. There is no good way to do this. Particularly since MediaWiki has no good import/export and upgrades are only supported like two versions at a time.
...This is why there are two different MediaWiki packages for Sandstorm now, and also why I chose to just copy every page into the new grain manually.
It's incredible watching the politicians who told Israel to "do whatever you have to do" including "drop nukes" on Gaza, then vote for tens of billions in arms for Israel as they knowingly bombed civilians, even to the point that Biden admitted it violated international law, suddenly clutch their pearls that the ICC is enforcing international law.
Suddenly "law and order" and "international rules based order" need not apply. smh
@QasimRashid I mean, the US is not exactly well-known for recognizing the Hague to begin with. The law applies to thee but not to mee has been sort of our go-to approach, unfortunately.
@GossiTheDog The other fun fact is that a bunch of these companies have like 100,000 employees, and they get really upset if you point out on HN or the like that they are stanning their employer.
I have been accused of "doxxing" for merely pointing out a guy loudly justifying why Google was the best at everything was a manager on their Ads team.
@ainmosni@GossiTheDog Yep, one of my favorite "shills Google on HN in his free time" guys got laid off by them last year, and I had a good laugh about it.
@ainmosni@GossiTheDog The free on-site amenities and events are huge. It's not just about keeping you on campus, it's about tying your whole life to the company. A few of the people I have argued with the loudest were "Googler with Googler spouse" which is just... absolute corporate success. The entire family is company-owned.
@ainmosni@GossiTheDog There's nothing inherently wrong, of course, with meeting your spouse at work, but it happens so much more often in these companies because the employee's entire social circle is the company.
@BoscoZebra@dansup@evan@cwebber@thisismissem@Claire@lanodan@trwnh@grishka@smallcircles@deadsuperhero That's an incredibly poor way of looking at it. Bad social media is responsible for Trump's election, the rise of the alt-right, etc. Social media has insane amounts of impact on the world, and these folks are doing it to make the world better instead of make profit at any cost.
