And you don’t have to deal with assholes.

I refuse to pay $70 for a game, especially with how many AAA flops we’ve seen, so I guess I’ll be replaying the first one again when this comes out.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I do make a few exceptions, but it’s based on the feedback of the preorder people. I played the hell out of Dark Arisen, so I’m sure I’ll fold sooner than later with this one.

I just don’t like this $70 trend, especially when most companies aren’t passing that profit to the people that actually make these games. I want Capcom to be different and stick to their words, but I’m always a skeptic.

Civ 6!

It’s Civ 6. Had never seen this myself until my wife showed me lol.

A RULE SPY'S IN THE BASE?! (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I searched up “Lemmy” on the PlayStore and noticed that Reddit appears right before the last lemmy client in that search X3 do u guys know if there r any other lemmy clients worth trying? I randomly felt like trying all I could find and for now I’ll stay on Jerboa and the Web UI but I use Voyager too now, mainly for DMs...

Arctic is my jam.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Yeah, sorry lol. I’ve heard Voyager on Android is good but I’d probably download Raccoon for the app icon lmao.

$9k median price for a Super Bowl ticket… what a fucking ripoff lmao.

I’ve been a dev professionally since around 2005 and started writing my first bits of code around 2001. Was diagnosed in the 90s with ADHD. Took meds for a little while as a kid, but nothing worked for me, so I went unmedicated until about a year ago.

I deal with the same thing as you, even now in my 40s. Got laid off for 3 months and that absolutely wrecked what remaining confidence I had left. Finally landed something but haven’t felt the same since, and that’s on top of already struggling daily to not feel like a useless idiot.

To make matters worse, I was recently told that I need to “iterate faster”. Small things like that will take weeks of feeling good about progress, and throw it straight into the trash. When you get no real wins, everything feels like one big endless loss.

If you can at least get a non-stimulant, that has worked for me. My focus has gotten better and helps me temporarily silence the demons. Also, what you note about starting strong and enthusiastic, only to end up bored and wrecking it all… that’s very much an ADHD thing. With the way our brains are wired, interest in what we’re doing is a requirement. If that’s lacking, our ability to follow through and stay consistent goes out the window no matter how hard we try. I’ve been waffling on my career for a few years now because of it. Swaying between finding shreds of it interesting, but also entertaining the idea of leaving dev altogether.

Good luck! All I can recommend is try to get meds and take them consistently; go to the gym and focus on outside interests; try not to make work the center of your world.

It’s hard for us to not care about our jobs because we automatically invest so much in them emotionally, and capitalism forces our employment to be at the center of our lives constantly. If you started coding as a hobby and turned it into a career, that also adds a layer of investment too. I had an awesome manager once that used to say “we’re not saving babies here”.

When I started a non-stim, it took a little while to be effective. You might have some slight side effects too, but they were fairly minor for me and didn’t last long. Just stick with the meds and make sure to take them consistently (and with food). The gym is great too. I just started going again officially myself (I workout at home and have a cardio regimen every week already) and it helps a ton. Boosts your endorphins and confidence instantly.

I always try to remind myself that if I’m not functioning well, no one is getting anything out of me. We have to focus on ourselves and everything else will eventually come with it.

Exercise is the only thing that has ever sorted out any back issues I’ve had in my life. It’s all about strengthening your muscles to keep supporting your body properly. If your muscles are weak, your posture suffers, and pain comes with it.

Ahh the future of dev. Having to compete with AI and LLMs, while also being forced to hastily build apps that use those things, until those things can build the app themselves.

orca,

Oh I use Copilot daily. It fills the gaps for the repetitive stuff like you said. I was writing Stories in a Storybook.js project once and was able to make it auto-suggest the remainder of my entire component states after writing 2-3. They worked out of the gate too with maybe a single variable change. Initially, I wasn’t even going to do all of them in that coding session just to save time and get it handed off, but it was giving me such complete suggestions that I was able to build every single one out with interaction tests and everything.

Outside of use cases like that and getting very general content, I think AI is a mess. I’ve worked with ChatGPT’s v3.5-4 API a ton and it’s unpredictable and hard to instruct sometimes. Prompts and approaches that worked 2 weeks ago, will now suddenly give you some weird edge case that you just can’t get it to stop repeating—even when using approaches that worked flawlessly for others. It’s like trying to patch a boat while you’re in it.

The C suite people and suits jumped on AI way too early and have haphazardly forced it into every corner. It’s become a solution searching for a problem. The other day, a friend of mine said he had a client that casually asked how they were going to use AI on the website they were building for them, like it was just a commonplace thing. The buzzword has gotten ahead of itself and now we’re trying to reel it back down to earth.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Make sure you ask the AI not to hallucinate because it will sometimes straight up lie. It’s also incapable of counting.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I do feel bad when I have to tell it not to. Hallucinating is fun!

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

It’s honestly a gamble based on my experience. Instructions that I’ve given ChatGPT have worked for a while, only to be mysteriously abandoned for no valid reason. Telling AI not to hallucinate is apparently common practice from the research I’ve done.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Yep. Tell it to lie and it will.

I'm looking for a TOS-breaking telegram client that strips out all the premium shit

Hello fellow pirates! I’m tired of having all the telegram premium ads and antifeatures in the client and I’m looking for a client that removed them even if it’s against the TOS. Any tips? I’d rather use an actual open source fork than a cracked version of the original...

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

Love that you’re complaining about this stuff in the piracy community lol.

I took a job once for slightly less than I wanted because the job was really interesting to me. The agreement I got in writing though was that after 6 months, they would bring me up to where I wanted to be.

6 months arrives and they tell me they can’t pay me more because then it would put me above people I worked alongside with that had been there longer. I was told this despite it being a signed deal, so I essentially got bait-and-switched.

I left for another job a little while after that.

That job laid me off after 6 months with a handful of other people. I woke up to a locked computer. To make matters worse, a friend that still works there told me they offered absolutely nothing for the holidays due to finances (they didn’t even send out gifts like they usually do). 🤦

Finally got back on my feet with something stable that pays really well. I even received an 8% bonus for the holidays.

orca,
@orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts avatar

I considered it but at the time it felt like more time and effort than what it was worth.
