In July, Lockheed Martin completed the build of NASA’s X-59 test aircraft, which is designed to turn sonic booms into mere thumps, in the hope of making overland supersonic flight a possibility. Ground tests and a first test flight are planned for later in the year. NASA aims to have enough data to hand over to US regulators...
Interesting thought; I’d hope so. Maybe some material physics/chemistry research that makes some stuff cheaper for trains (I’m not an engineer so totally out of my depth here).
I find the translucent tab/navigation bar to be distracting and much prefer a solid color. I was wondering if I’m the only one, I also opened a PR for this, hopefully that makes it through :)...
I am confused as to whether it is acceptable to use code produced by other people for something that is related to me and my creations. Do i have to resort to coding my portfolio website with pure css and js to demonstrate my credibility and experience as a candidate employee? Does the ideology of ‘using other people’s tools...
That makes sense. But I guess there’s these questions: at what resolution? For how long? Maybe the status quo is such because it’s simpler code. The project is still relatively young. I wonder where/how we can discuss these things?
Not clear on what systems they are switching operating systems. Assuming workstations operated by people? I’m sure there’s a lot of Linux there already on servers. Apparently there’s at least 1.4 million people in the Indian Ministry of Defence so I’m worried this is one of those announcements to get a licensing discount from Microsoft :(
Great points. It’s the proprietary nature and lack of interoperability of “the cloud” that causes problems. My email is hosted on a remote server but I have control over my data. There’s no algorithm controlling what order I see my mail in or who I can forward stuff to. There are many different tools and clients available to me and to everyone else to work with their data.
Imagine if publishing a photo from my phone to Instagram meant copying a file from one folder to another. Or if I want to create an automatically translated voiceover from the captions of all my old Facebook photos in a video editor. Right now these operations require complex software. But the technology is all there and has been for a long time.
After a few conversations with people on Lemmy and other places it became clear to me that most aren’t aware of what it can do and how much more robust it is compared to the usual “jankiness” we’re used to....
I started daily driving Linux since I left school this year and used it before but mainly windows because school wanted us to run Word, Teams, etc. Today I wanted to play games and haven’t set up my device for gaming and didn’t want to download the game twice (good internet). Like a good PC user I wanted to do my updates. It...
(location: Germany) are there ANY decent, affordable winter gloves WITHOUT leather? I can’t seem to find any in the shops that I frequent. i think so far i found one pair that wasn’t in the shop when i went there.
Love the native swift app as well as the Apollo-like look and feel. However, I still feel that a lot of these lemmy apps (including this one), still seem modeled on a monolithic backend. Which isn’t the case with the fediverse....
It isn’t the case for server-to-server communication, but as users we interact with one instance.
This is similar to email. For example, you connect to a mail server (via SMTP) to send email. That server then relays the message onwards through the “fediverse” of mail. A regular mail client does not connect to all possible SMTP servers. Does that make sense?
Version 1.0.1’s scrolling is still extremely choppy to the point that it is unusable on my iPhone 8 Plus. I’ve tried Memmy, Bean, Avelon, and their scrolling is extremely smooth compared to Mlem’s.
Great point. It takes a lot of skill to succinctly summarise some dense material for someone who juggles lots of things. Frankly I think we need more of that in the modern world - there is so much information out there! But the killer is that “bombastic language” and false dichotomy. Making things easier to understand - clarity - is important. This good versus evil bullshit is just wrong; unfortunately stuff isn’t that easy.
Absolutely agree with you. The point I wanted to make is that there are different ways to summarise, say, in this example, a 50-page memo. The sad thing here is how the official needed to resort to the good versus evil false dichotomy. This oversimplification to have been required because, unfortunately, Trump is stupid.
I guess I’m saying that it’s a shame that there are probably a lot of smart people trying to make sense of all the geopolitics, picking things apart, critical thinking… but in the end it was all for nought; they had to appeal to someone - Trump - who never really wanted to, nor was able to, internalise or contextualise it.
Haha yes I think you’re right! I find it difficult. And I’m interested in getting better at it. That’s part of the reason why I like discussing stuff on Lemmy. Do you have any tips?
I think my original comment was taken as if I was excusing Trump. That sucks. I wanted to convey the opposite :(
Thanks :) I think I’ll follow that advice, especially on political forums! My clumsy wording aiming to criticise Trump was taken the wrong way and generated negativity. Thanks for your time.
