I bought my current HP laptop SEVEN YEARS AGO. It wasn't super expensive, and it had a 1920x1080 screen.

As I look at laptops today, most still have 1920x1080 resolution. How is that still a thing?

Shouldn't everything be UHD/4K by now?

@sfalken The laptop I bought in 2012 was 1366x768 ... and I got 1920x1080 in 2017. It also had 16 GB RAM. It shouldn't be so hard to get UHD/4K with 32 GB RAM and a decent 1 TB NVMe SSD.

@sfalken I saw a cheap (sub $400) laptop from Costco over the holidays and it had 1366x768. Couldn't believe the parts are even being made.

I don't know how effective argument is in the real world, but it sure doesn't work well in social media.

Whenever I tried to push other people into "seeing it my way," it only caused bad feelings.

I still think it's OK to "make an argument" in a blog post or essay, and you'd think that a resulting discussion would give all sides the opportunity to air their differences and educate/persuade, but more often than not, it tends to get ugly.

What do we do about this?

Sometimes it's possible to advocate for change from within, or to work on the things that you don't think are right.

Often it's better to "vote with your feet," and find a community/project that does it a different way.

I don't have the answers.

This was inevitable, but it honestly stings to see fifty million dollars set fire to so irresponsibly. Gross. https://www.semafor.com/article/01/03/2024/the-messengers-board-weighed-shutting-it-down-over-cash-shortfalls

@ben This is the first I've heard of the Messenger, so they did a crap job promoting it

I've noticed some people refer to me as a dev, although I never claimed to be one. One person even accused me of not having recent commits in Firefish. So... I have to confess I am not a dev.

My role in Firefish was community manager/project coordinator. But isn't it interesting that people assume I'm a dev because I was in the core team? It's so often that community-driven open source projects are run only by devs, that people just assumed I am a dev too. And, with all the respect to the wonderful dev community, I think that's kind of a problem.

You see, an open-source project needs much more than coding. My role in will include coordinating development, designing features, testing, communication and feedback from the community, managing issues on the repo, decision making, moderating catodon.social, participating and moderating the matrix channels and I'm sure more will be added to that list. Devs may or may not be good at these things - and this clearly affect some projects. Being a good dev doesn't necessarily mean being good at everything around running an open source project, and that's ok. There's a reason companies hire project managers when developing software. You can add every community request out there - if you don't keep UX on your mind and don't have a consistent vision for your software, it will end up poorly designed and bloated.

So, I have to warn you - I may not be suitable to answer your more technical questions! We have a support channel for that, and our lead dev Namekuji is more knowledgeable about the coding aspect - while other devs, who are interested in our direction, have already reached out and are starting to work with us. So hopefully we will soon have a lively dev and admin community where we can support each other.

I'd say that one of my main goals in Catodon is to offer a safe, inclusive and laid back environment where open source devs will be able to cooperate and contribute in a productive way. Making open source code is a wonderful gesture, you are sharing your work for everyone to freely use. And it deserves to be done in a well organized and self-fulfilling way! Good communication is not always easy, but it's definitely worth trying. We have incredibly talented coders here that can do wonders when working smoothly together. That's the mindset with which we'll be trying to make Catodon a community-driven project.

A year of creative pursuits.

15+ years ago, I caught the last wave of editorial photography work. All through college I paid my way through the world traveling, eating, writing stories, with my words and with my cameras.

2008 made that disappear. Eventually I found my way out of that industry and, perhaps a little heartbroken and never finding my place in commercial photography, I just didn’t do it at all.

I spent all of 2023 falling in love again with film photography.

I kept my server going for about four months. I just killed it. It was in the Oracle Cloud, and the upgrade of from 9.2 to 9.3 was taking a long time. I thought it was hanging, and I hit ctrl-c. That stopped a "scriptlet." I reran the upgrade, which said it completed. I should have know then to remove the new kernel. I rebooted, and that was it.

I hadn't yet set up backups for this server because I considered it experimental.

I'll start a new one soon.

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

I was able to pause GRUB with Oracle Cloud's serial console and boot into an old kernel.

Barbaric as hell. That's my review. I removed the latest kernel and then upgraded it. I'm not sure it will work, so I'm not rebooting for now. I'll wait for a new kernel, upgrade that and THEN reboot.

So for now my server is back among the living.

Time to figure out a backup plan. I've already started. In my mind, that is.

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

The "trick": Once you've started the Cloud Shell, reboot your instance (click the box to reboot immediately) and make sure you click in the shell window so your browser's focus is there and your keyboard commands will be detected by your instance.

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

This all started when I was doing a dnf upgrade, and it was taking a LONG time. I thought it was hanging, so I hit ctrl-c. Unfortunately it was in the middle of upgrading the kernel, and the new kernel was rendered unbootable.

I'm sure there are better ways of upgrading a Linux server that don't depend on you sitting in front of a terminal on the other end, and I plan to use them.

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

@josephholsten I was able to use the Cloud Shell to reboot, pause GRUB and boot into an older kernel.

I removed the new (bad) kernel, then upgraded again.

At this point I'm afraid to reboot until there's an even newer kernel in .
