Now that I have my first company computer since before COVID, my use of Linux and BSD will be more extracurricular.

On Friday I kept the personal laptop running OpenBSD all day because it's better behaved when it comes to reliably suspending and resuming.

Again, if you haven't run OpenBSD on the desktop in years, things have come a very long way.

On the Windows 11 work laptop, I was ready for a fight with IT over installing Vim. They already didn't want to "let" me run LibreOffice because we are supposed to use Google Apps for everything officey.

I avoided the conflict by trying to install Vim to my user directory. I vaguely remembered doing that years ago, and surprisingly it worked.

I did the same with IrfanView. Also successful.

Curiously, SSH works out of the Windows Terminal.

I'd like an FTP client. I didn't know if that's "allowed." I will be looking into PSCP.

@mcg IT will not turn that on

@vwbusguy I haven't looked at Nextcloud in a long time. I'm looking at what is involved. I already use Syncthing for file sync, but that doesn't have a web interface. This could be a fun thing to play with on the Raspberry Pi 4B

@vwbusguy I can't find recommended specs for . I did see something about SD cards not being recommended for storage, which I totally understand. My current Pi server uses a USB flash drive for storage, but I'm not against using a regular USB drive (spinning or SSD).

@viktor @vwbusguy Thanks for these links

@vwbusguy It's so easy to set the RPi 4B to boot from USB. My brief experience with FreeBSD booting from USB wasn't great, but I don't think USB had anything to do with it. I need to set up a Raspberry Pi OS system on USB and give that a go.

I would like to try TinaCMS, but I need to "commit" to running a Hugo site that uses Git and CI/CD. Not saying I won't do it, but it is not how I'm doing it now.

Hey, look, did it to me too.

They didn't lock up my entire drive, but they're blocking access to my manuscript. Won't even allow me to download it.

I'm as intrigued by as I was by , but ultimately I'm not sure the complexity is worth it for me.

Even has a ratio of complexity vs. benefits that fits well with my work (and play) flow.

, and all hide enough of the nitty gritty behind the scenes — updates happen without me needing to know it.

And traditional is so familiar and reliable, it's hard not to tap it for just about any use case.

I appreciate the large amount of documentation in . The PDF of the manual is 687 pages of LaTeX-formatted documentation:

@AngryAnt I think the Guix documentation is pretty good. You don't see that volume of docs in most projects, and it definitely exceeds the bar for quantity. Quality is not bad, either.

For me the key is: Are enough people using the system, solving their problems and then sharing their solutions?

Just saw this article on trouble with Nix.

@solene, are you looking into Guix?

#nix #guix

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

@solene I am downloading now to look at it in a VM.

passthejoe,
@passthejoe@ruby.social avatar

@chfkch @solene I did the install, then tried two `guix install packagename' commands. Neither led to usable software.

When I tried NixOS about a year or so ago, in the end I decided it wasn't for me, but at least I could install and run things.

@mrak0 @chfkch @solene It's been a journey (this morning ...)
